Latest News from Primary One

I hope you have had a relaxing break and managed to have some fun time together.  This weeks blog will be a little shorter as we have only been in school for a few days.

Writing

This week the children have been writing about their  holidays. They have been writing independently and trying to include some of the common words we have been learning. Some pictures below.

      “n” sound

New sound this week was “n”. The children used newspaper cuttings to create the “n” shape.

Today we have been focusing on partitioning numbers to help create number stories. Some pictures below.

Health and Wellbeing

On Wednesday the children explored different emotions. They watched an extract from upside down and identified a number of emotions and how each made them feel. They really enjoyed expressing different emotions through drama. Today we read My Big Shouting Day” and used a guided draw to create Mr Angry. They drew some super pictures!

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and I will post more updates next week.

Primary 1B Learning Highlights

It has been a very short and quick week in Primary 1B but we have still managed to squeeze in lots of fun learning, here are some of our highlights.

Literacy

On Wednesday we were all excited to be back in school, seeing our friends and chatting about our holidays. We shared with each other all the fun things we got up over the October break and we drew pictures to go alongside our reports. We are getting very confident with using the sounds we know to help us in our writing.

We have also been learning all about sound ‘n’. It is a long stretchy sound, which we use the tip of our tongue on the roof of our mouth to help make the sound. We have been making the shape of the sound using play-dough and practising writing it in our jotters. It is very easy to get n confused with m so we need to think about what our mouth is doing to make the sound.

Health and Well Being

This week we have been talking about emotions. We watched some clips from the movie ‘Inside Out’ and we had to guess which emotion was being portrayed by the character. Below is the link if you want to have another go at home. We had to share why we chose which emotion and then we shared times when we felt that emotion. We found that we had lots of things in common, one being we are mostly all scared of spiders and we feel sad when somebody gets hurt.

We had a go at using our drama and miming skills by playing emotions charades. It was great fun and we had some very dramatic emotions portrayed. One of our favourite characters was ‘Anger’. We practised our listening skills and pencil control by following instructions to draw the character Anger. We were pretty proud of our efforts and they looked fantastic in the end – we will add some pictures to the blog next week when they are completely finished.

Numeracy

We have been continuing to develop our knowledge of numbers up to 20. We are currently learning about teen numbers and today our magic number was 11. We have been investigating all the different ways to make and display 11. We have been counting forwards and backwards from different starting points and finishing at 11 and we have been making collections of 11 and practising our counting skills.

We hope you enjoyed reading about our week.

Happy Weekend everyone.

Mrs Stevenson and Primary 1B

P5 keep up the good work!

Although it has been a short week we have still been busy learning about lots of things!

Then we designed our own pieces of surrealist art.

Have a great holiday everybody! Stay Safe!

This Week in P3/2

Maths

In maths this week we were partitioning numbers. Partitioning is when we split large numbers into smaller. This can make it easier to solve maths problems.

Darby- “We were partitioning numbers this week”.

Lucy- “partitioning a number means to spit the number. If you were to split the number 35, you would get 30 and 5”.

Literacy

This week we been reading our new books. We then had to read the book to find the information to ask questions about the story.

In word boost, our story of the week was ‘The Paper Dolls’ by Julia Donaldson. We were learning the meaning of our boost words and then identifying if these words were nouns or verbs.

Brianna- “I was spelling words with the sound ‘s’.”

Kyle –“We read every week and everyday”.

IDL

This week were we using the drama technique of hot seating. Hot seating is a strategy in which a pupil played the character of the witch from ‘Room on the Broom’. The other students would ask the witch questions and the pupil would need to answer them in character.

Robyn- “We were asking our friends questions because they were pretending to be the witch from ‘Room on the Broom”.

Hope you all have a lovely holiday!

P7/6

We had a lovely week, full of fun learning.

Literacy- We learnt to take notes, spell contacted words and we learned how to make inferences.

Numeracy and Maths

We have been learning to multiply numbers multiples of 10, 100 and 1000.

We also practiced the column multiplication strategy.  Some of us are now able to multiply up to  4 digit number by 1 digit and a few of can multiply 2 digit by 2 digit numbers.

IDL

We  have been exploring the importance of Black history.

HWB

We explored what discrimination means and how it affects emotions/ self esteem.

Have a great October break everyone!

Mrs Lockhart’s Days

This week we worked hard in our reading fluency. We noted that we take a pause at a comma and at a full stop. This helps the reading make sense.  We spotted some people self-correcting when they read incorrectly and we realised that helps our understanding too.

Our P.E. outside continues to be great fun. There are lots of running games and our hearts certainly get a good work out.

Lewis  – I like the running best because I can run fast.

Shay – I enjoy P.E. outside because I can run really fast. It gives me so much exercise and makes my heart go really fast.

Ryley – It makes me feel better about myself because I am getting more fit and healthy.

We practised our note taking on Friday and then wrote a paragraph on a current piece of news. Mrs Lockhart thought there might be some journalists in the making!

Roman – We wrote notes about the news and then I chose to write about slavery.

Summer – It was really useful to take notes so we could remember all our good ideas.

Alyssa – I found it interesting and fun. The note taking was nice because it gave you a good plan and supported the actual piece of writing.

Happy holidays everyone.

Weekly Update from P4/3

Well we have made it to the end of term and what a fun, busy and hard working term we have had. All of the children have made progress in their learning and challenge themselves in everything they do, well done P4/3!!

As part of our learning about the BFG, we decided to use our creative skills and design dream catchers. We talked about the different job roles that use creative skills and some of the suggestions included ‘fashion designer.’ ‘artist,’ and ‘architect’. I think the children have done a great job, well done!!

This week in class our school value focus has been to ‘value’ each other and ourselves. I have to say Mrs Morrison felt valued by her class this week as all of the children made me ‘Best Teacher’ cards to celebrate National Teacher Day. Thank you P4/3 and Miss Taylor for helping to organise the surprise!!

Have a super holiday, stay safe and I look forward to seeing all of the children when they return.
