Update from P4/3

It has been another busy week in P4/3. We have been working hard to improve our learning environment, here are some photos of our reading area and The Great Wall of Friendship.

In literacy, we have been learning to use a dictionary and have discussed why this is an important tool to use. Well done to Brendan and Skye who used the dictionary to help them spell tricky words.

As part of our Health and Well-Being lessons this week, we used the story ‘The Colour Monster’ to help us discuss the different emotions and feelings we may experience. Look out next week for pictures of our Health and Well-Being wall display.

Well done to the children who brought in appropriate footwear and clothing for outdoor learning with Mrs Dobbie.  Outdoor learning takes place every Friday morning.

Have a lovely weekend and I will post again next Friday.

Update from Primary 2

We have had a busy week here in Primary 2! Here are some of the things we have been doing.

Numeracy

We are continuing to look at numbers before and after a given number. To help us with this, we have been thinking about our daily routines and what order we do things throughout the day.

We have also been working on dot patterns and coming up with strategies for seeing numbers in different ways.

Euan – “The number after 7 is 8.”

Macy May –  “We did dot patterns with a partner.”

IDL

This week, we have read all about grey and white crayon. We created our very own emotion crayons and the results were fantastic! We came up with so many different emotions! We also discovered that white crayon felt rather useless as nobody ever seen him. We had a discussion about how white crayon is very useful and then used paint to investigate what happened to different colours when we added white to them.

Jordon – “We mixed white and blue to make light blue.”

Vrishti – “White and red makes light pink.”

Writing

We have started to look at descriptive writing. This week, we discussed the “describing bubble” and how this will help us in our writing. We had a think about all of the different describing words relating to colour, shape, size, number and doing words.

Archie P – “We drew doing words like jumping.”

Louie – “Eating is a doing word.”

Summer – “I know pink is a colour word.”

Max – “Five is a number word.”

Have a fantastic weekend everyone!

A mmmmmmmmmarvellous week in Primary 1B

What an extremely busy and quick week it has been down in Primary 1B. There have been lots of wonderful and exciting learning experiences happening in our classroom and we would like to share some of our highlights with you.

We have been continuing to focus on getting to grips with our school values, this week’s focus has been on the value Nurture. We have been talking about how we can nurture each other with kindness and encourage each other.

In phonics this week we have been learning about the mmmmmmmmm sound – that’s right the letter Mm. We know that it is a red sound because we make it using our lips. We also know that it is a looooooooong stretchy sound. We have been excellent at listening out for the sound at the beginning of words and can list lots and lots of different words beginning with m.

Here are some pictures of the different types of activities we do in class to help us learn.

In numeracy we have been learning about the number 3 and 4. We have learned some number rhymes to help us remember how to form the letter correctly. Below is the one to help us remember number 4! We have been investigating all the different ways of making and representing these numbers.

One of the games we have really been enjoying is using the online dice roll, where we can roll the dice and shout out the number which is shows! This is great for getting us used to identifying regular dot patterns, we’re such experts now that we don’t even need to count the dots!! Here is the link in case anyone wants to have a go at home.

We have also been working very hard on improving our fine motor skills through adding lots of important little details into our drawings. One of the activities we have enjoyed this week is making play doh faces to help us remember all the different facial features we all have. Here are some pictures of our creations.

We hope you have enjoyed our little snapshot of our week.

Latest News From P1A

We have had another busy week in P1A. The children are now more familar with our daily school routines and are becoming even more independent.

Literacy- Sounds

This week we have started our more formal phonics programme and have been exploring the “m” sound. We have looked at where we make this sound in our mouths and words that begin with the “m” sound. We have also been making and writing the sound with a range of media such as play dough, paint, pom poms, string and black markers. Today we completed an “m” sorting activity (their first piece of work in their literacy jotters!)

We have looked at words such as mat, map, mop, man, men, mum, melon etc. It would be a good idea if you are out and about to point out things that begin with the m sound.

Numeracy

We are continuing to work on numeral formation. The children find the cards below useful.

As well as forming numerals we have been making and drawing collections of 3 and 4 objects. We have started looking at different ways to record numbers and can now use a five frame. Five frames are useful when looking at different ways to make 5.

Health and Wellbeing

This week as well as focusing on being safe we have been exploring our nurture value . As a class we tried to think about what nurture means and what it would look like. We decided firstly that we would try our best to be kind with our words and actions and secondly, we would  try to incuded everyone in our play. I have been very impressed by the kind and caring nature displayed by many of the children this week. At Deans we are very proud of all the children who display our school values.

A picture below of our Jigsaw pieces which shows different ways we are keeping ourselves and others safe during covid.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and I will post more news next week.

A Busy Week in Primary 4

This has been another busy week in P4! In Numeracy we continue to focus on our addition skills, with a particular focus on our layout of chimney sums. The pupils have produced some lovely, neat work that they should be very proud of. I hope we will keep up this standard! We worked out answering some single digit, 2 digit, 3 digit and even 4 digit addition sums. We will extend this by looking at carrying within addition also. I can already see many children becoming more confident with their addition skills! We have also been working on our mental maths skills with some mixed questions – mainly focused around addition and subtraction.

In Literacy this week we have continued reading in our groups. We have had some discussion around the texts and we have tried some comprehension questions based on what we have read. We are using a variety of skills such as finishing the sentences, matching the sentence starter to its ending and then giving our own full answers to a question. We have been focusing on common words (Frys Words) for our spelling just now and will continue this for the next while to build up our spelling confidence and knowledge. In writing we have created an All About Me story to tell everyone about us and the things we like and enjoy doing. Have a look at some below:

In PE we have been doing some Team Races. We decided on the types of races we would like to do which ranged from the bunny hop race, to a walking race to a skipping race and more! The children had lots of fun taking part in these, although I think some of us need practise in going right to the finish line!!! We look forward to trying out some other races next week!
