Update from Primary 3

This week P3 have been demonstrating how well they can read to Mrs Hillan by reading their group readers to her. We have some very fluent readers in P3, as well as some children experimenting with using expression. Keep it up Primary 3!!

In Numeracy this week we have been looking at counting on and counting back. We used some Interactive games online to support this. We had to use our communication skills and collaboration skills in order to work together on these games.

 

As part of our ‘Wee Tour of Scotland’ we have looked at Edinburgh and Stirling this week. We have worked collaboratively on the laptops to find information to create factfiles and leaflets. We will work hard to complete these next week as well as hopefully looking at another city in Scotland.

Next week we will be making shortbread with Mrs Wood after us writing our own instructions for how to make shortbread last week.

 

Primary 3 have been enjoying Zumba during our PE time. The pupils were great at following the routines! The children had the opportunity to select which Zumba tracks to follow. Hopefully next week we can maybe try individuals leading learning through our own freestyle Zumba!

Exciting new topics

We have been starting some exciting new topics this year.

For our topic work we have been looking at some Scottish comics and their characters. We hope to develop this. Watch this space! This will also contribute to our language work this term. We are also continuing our work on climate change.

In maths we have started looking at fractions, decimals and percentages. We have also been doing data handling and relating this to the warming of Australia and the deadly fires they have experienced.

Primary One Science Club

What a fun session we had today.  We were very lucky to have budding young scientist, Bella, come along to help us out. Thank you Bella for being such a great help.

Today we had a go at the skittles colours diffusion experiment which has been very prominent on the internet lately. First off we tried spacing the skittles out around a paper plate and then adding water on top of them, hoping to see the colours soak into the middle. This didn’t quite go to plan. We discussed some alternatives and decided to try warm water in the middle of the plate to see if it made a difference. We found out that when the water was warmer it worked much faster. It’s all about trial and error. It didn’t look quite how it did on the internet but we gave it our best and tried to improve our work when it didn’t quite work out! That’s what science is all about!

P6/7 – continuing to Grow our Business !

Following the success of Limited Edition Christmas Forkies in the last few weeks of term “Crafty” business decided to send a donation of £52 to Childline (this allowed for a dolls’ house to be purchased and 1 hour of counselling over the Christmas period).

Looking forward to the new term, P6/7 have decided to focus efforts on our upcoming Spring Fayre and the types of craft packs and Spring items that we might sell. Miss Taylor attended the Parent Council meeting on Tuesday evening, to represent the business, and to offer that P6/7 will be keen to sell goods, and to help support by being the sales teams on stalls from 12.30 – 1.30 on the day of the event (Friday 3rd April).

We have since discussed the budget we have available, and started to look at materials  and resources we may need.

We also spent time looking at our individual skills on My World of Work website. This has a section particularly for Primary Children where pupils can create their own profile and check their skills by completing a questionnaire. This then categorises everyone as a type of animal, suggests jobs that may be suitable for the future and also ways to develop skills now. This proved very popular with everyone and also cause some amusement as we had a number of bears , panthers, koalas and even a clownfish! Despite the humour, the questions asked, give a good insight to personalities and I believe a few parents have already had a go on Thursday evening”! Children can access this website from home now that they have been registered.

 

Primary 7’s busy week

Maths

We have been learning to add and subtract negative numbers by using money (Bank balances) and thermometers.

P.E

We have been carrying out the bleep test before we start our fitness activities this term. We will be working hard to improve our fitness over this term and will check our improvements by carrying out the bleep test again. We will let you know how we get on.

Our Classroom Environment

With our new floor we have changed the seating and theme of our classroom. We are bringing the outdoors indoors in preparation for our community garden project.

A busy week in P2!

Wow what a busy week we have had in P2.

We started two new maths topics this week – shape and time. We began our shape topic by recalling what we already know about shapes. Then we played lots of fun games to help us remember what different 2D shapes look like. Later on in the week we all had our own small clocks to help us learn about o’clock and half past. This can be quite tricky because it can be hard to remember which hand is which on a clock but we will keep working on it! Look at the wonderful work we have been doing!

In P.E. this week we started learning all about gymnastics. Firstly, we spoke about safety during gymnastics because it can be a dangerous sport if we are not being safe. This week, we focused on balance and how we can balance on different body parts. By the end of the lesson, Miss Borsbey would call out a number and we had to collaborate as a team to create a balance on that number of body parts. This is also building upon our social intelligence skill of collaboration in different settings and contexts.

We started learning about materials in science this week. We spoke about different materials we find every day and those that are a bit less common. We then collaborated in teams to sort different materials based on whether we think they are hard or soft. Miss Borsbey was so impressed with the leadership and communication skills some of the pupil’s were displaying, which are more of our social intelligence skills that we have been working on.

Wednesday was a super fun day in our class. We started the morning off with a skype call to a P5/6 class in Millport on the Isle of Cumbrae. We were so nervous as we waited for them to join the call but we spoke about how nerves can be a good thing and how we can turn our nerves into excitement and confidence, building on another social intelligence skill of feeling. We introduced ourselves and explained to P5/6 that our topic is Katie Morag and that we had some questions to ask them as we would love to know what it is like to live on an Island. We were so shocked to find out that they have lots of beaches around their school but there’s no McDonalds on their Island! All of the children did such a great job before, during and after the skype call.

Wednesday afternoon brought even more fun and excitement as we had an artist in to work with us. Seonaid Sandham creates her work out of shells and stones that she finds on the beach. We explained our topic to Miss Sandham and she said that she would love to come in to show us her work and even help us have a go ourselves! The artwork that Miss Sandham brought in for us to see was beautiful. She gave us a demonstration and we couldn’t wait to try it out for ourselves. We definitely have some young artists in our class! Some of us even discovered that if we held the shells to our ears we heard what sounded like the waves at the beach!

This week we set ourselves the super tricky challenge of learning how to tie our shoe laces. Almost all of us managed the first part, but creating bunny ears is very very tricky. A few of the children showed fantastic resilience and perseverance and managed to tie their lace perfectly! Well done P2!

Update from Primary One

We have had another extremely busy learning week in Primary One. We have been reading books about Winter and why some animals migrate and others hibernate. The children were amazed to find out how far geese fly and how many months hedgehogs hibernate. We began thinking about the changes we make during Winter and have created a display showing a bare tree covered with hats, gloves and snowflakes.

We have also listed the skilled we used to create our display – cutting, gluing, painting, drawing, scrunching, using primary colours to make a wash and creating a collage to demonstrate different textures.

We have continued to follow Hamish McHaggis on his adventures around Scotland. Hamish went to visit the Loch Ness Monster but unfortunately she was on her holidays. The story caused great excitement and discussion, so next week we will look at evidence from some non-fiction books and try to decided if there is enough evidence to prove that she exists. We also enjoyed learning about Edinburgh Castle and looking at pictures of the Forth Bridges (Hamish and his friends broke down there on their way to the Edinburgh Tattoo). The children used black fine line writer pens to draw an outline of these famous landmarks.

Pupil Voice

It is very important to us that children within our school have an opportunity to express their thoughts and ideas on matters which affect them. We had a discussion about the learning environment and what the children would like to change within our own classroom. The main message was that they wanted to have their own chair so with that in mind, all children created a name label and now have their own space in the classroom.

 

Health and Wellbeing – Dreams and Goals

We have been discussing what success and achievement means to us. The children chose one thing that made them feel proud of themselves. A few examples below.

 

 

Developing the Young Workforce

Following on from last weeks post,we have had a number of children leading the learning. Below is a picture of Oliver leading a math’s activity during smart start.

Collaboration is another essential skill needed to develop the young workforce. We reminded ourselves of the skills we should use at all times- listening, looking at the person who is talking, allowing others to talk, offering an opinion at the appropriate time. We are practicing effective collaboration every day.

Numeracy

This week I have set up number challenge using Numicon. Numicon is a practical way of representing number and the children have enjoyed exploring it and using it in different ways. We have also been using rekenreks which helps to develop number sense. We have been working on double numbers, rekenreks are a really useful tool for teaching this skill.

P5 Act Up in our New Role-Play Area

Class Environment

Having discussed our class layout and how we could improve it we have started to make changes. We thought that it would be a good idea in the library to change our display in order to encourage children to read our new books. Some of us designed book covers and others created book reviews by some of our favourite authors. This is what it now looks like:

Dinosaur Park

We are presently reading Dino Egg by Charlie James in class. We are enjoying the novel and have created a role-play station. Here you can be a scientist, park keeper, van driver, dinosaur or tourist!

Maths

We learnt about chance and probability to describe the likelihood of events happening. As a class we discussed certain scenarios and then had to hold up a card describing if we thought the event was impossible, unlikely, likely or certain.

Georgie – It was fun holding up the cards.

We disagreed about some events.

Mason – It is impossible that England will win the next World Cup.

However most of us agreed that it was just unlikely.

Lewis Duckworth – It is impossible that I will eat cornflakes for breakfast tomorrow. His justification was that there was none in the house.

However some of us argued that his mum might go out and buy some!

Eva – It is certain I will have cornflakes.

Some of us thought that might be a problem if they had all been used up. We tried to persuade Eva it was ‘likely’ she would have them.

Liam – We learnt that there could be different answers to the same question and both would be correct.

For example the likelihood of it snowing depends upon where you live in the world.

Numeracy

We continued to practise our tables including making use of loop games.

Literacy

One of our class writing targets is to use a variety of connectives. We played ‘Connectives Blockbusters’ to practise using connectives in sentences.

Writing

Emma – I enjoyed drawing and decorating my dinosaur egg and it has been fun making up the story about what happens to the dinosaur.

R.M.E.

We used our research skills to find out about the life of a famous Scottish Christian – Eric Liddell.

Chloe – We learnt that he was a famous Olympian.

Georgie -He would not race on a Sunday because of his faith.

 

Terrific Teamwork in Primary 2/1

This week we have been focusing on improving our collaboration or team work skills.

Mrs Stevenson set us a challenge where we had to work in small groups to make a days of the week poster with all the days in the correct order. We started off our challenge by discussing what a successful team would act like. Here are some of our ideas.

We will help each other.

We will share and take turns.

We will listen to each other and take turns to speak.

We will always follow our class charter and remember our school values.

We will all try our best to finish the task together.

We then got to work on our posters.

There were some excellent examples of collaboration such as…

Well done boys and girls for such a super afternoon of collaborating with each other. Our fantastic posters will go on our Maths working wall to help us with the rest of our learning on Time.

Here are some of the finished posters. The boys and girls even all helped to hold the poster together for the photos because that was fair.
