What have P2 been up to this week?

We have had a busy week again in P2!

In maths, we have been learning how to use scales to see what objects were lighter and heavier than each other. It was super tricky because if an item was really heavy it tipped the whole scale! We had to try our best to find a nice balance and record these findings in our workbooks.

In P.E. we learned how to turn our static long jump into a moving long jump. We worked in teams to practise the new skill and then split into pairs. We gave our partner feedback including their strengths when jumping and how they could improve next time. We had to look out for things including bending our knees, taking off on one foot and landing on two feet. We had so much fun!

During topic this week, we investigated how the dinosaurs became extinct. After a whole class discussion about the different possibilities, most of us agreed that it was most likely an asteroid that killed them. We took the information we learned and created dramas to show the extinction. Creating the dramas was hard work – it involved us communicating, collaborating and some of us even had the chance to be leaders. We performed each drama for our quality audience to watch and received peer feedback at the end. Miss Borsbey and Mrs Oliphant thought every group was absolutely fantastic!

On Wednesday, we met our new classmate Jigsaw Jo! Over the next few weeks, she is going to help us learn about the similarities and differences between people. We loved introducing ourselves to Jigsaw Jo and all had a chance to tell her our name and age. After the introductions, we had a discussion about what everyone in the class likes and dislikes. We began to notice that people like and dislike similar things regardless of their gender. With Jigsaw Jo’s help, we paired up and completed a shield writing all of the similarities between us. Some similarities were:

We both like pizza, we both like chicken, we both have a dog, we both like climbing trees, we both have blonde hair, and we both hate broccoli.

We can’t wait to see what fun activities Jigsaw Jo has for us next week!

Update from Primary One

We have had another extremely busy week in Primary one.

Health and Wellbeing

This week we have been focusing on Celebrating Differences. One of our school values is to make everyone feel included and special. So with this in mind we firstly began to unpick what makes us special? Sophie thinks she is special because she is kind and caring, Mark thinks he is special because he loves taking part in tricky math’s challenges. After a lot of elbow partner discussion we all agreed that we are all special in different ways and that’s a great thing. All of us are unique and  have a valuable part to play in our learning community.

This is the picture we used as an example. At first glance they look similar but when you look closer you begin to notice the differences and that what makes them special.

PE

In PE we are continuing to develop our balance and ball skills (we are improving every week!) Here are some pictures to prove it!

We have a lovely visit from our buddies today. They support the children  by listening to them read, helping them with tricky words and  meeting writing targets. They also come down on a Friday to take them to assembly.

Math’s Challenge

This weeks challenge was to make 10 in as many different ways as possible. The children worked collaboratively in small groups, supporting and encouraging each other.

Other News

We are continuing to learn new sounds and tricky words. The children are blending  sounds they know to make new words. We use word mats which encourage the children to identify beginning, middle and end sounds. Some  are now changing sounds to create words. We have completed a winter poem plan and will use the plan to write fantastic poems (I will include some photographs of them next week) We have also been researching and writing facts about rainbows. The children were amazed that you can not ever find the end of one or touch them. Nativity songs are being sung everyday, the children are loving it and can’t wait to get on the stage.

Next Week

We hope to see you next Friday for our book bug event. Thank you for your continued support.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend!

P6/7

In gym this week we have been learning about the Haka and the traditions associated with it. We watched some clips of men and women’s rugby teams performing the Haka. We then worked in groups to create our own sequence of moves in that style. This was also a good opportunity to develop skills in collaboration, communication and leadership. In just two sessions each of the groups did incredibly well and there was a great range of facial expressions, gestures and moves in the sequences. Pupils in the class reported that they thoroughly enjoyed the sessions as was evident from the volume of noise in the hall and smiles on faces!

In literacy we applied our descriptive skills in our last session on narrative writing. We used a video clip from the Literacy Shed website to give us a story start and focus for our writing. We looked closely at the targets for our level to make sure we were including the right aspects. We then used peer and self assessment mats to provide constructive feedback. Next week we will be starting work on information writing and will be creating a leaflet about Japan using Publisher.

In art this week we have been creating pieces based on celebrating difference which is our health theme just now. These are still a work in progress and will be finished off next week. The class are looking forward to working on anime style art as part of our topic on Japan. The lessons will be led by one of our pupils who is very skilled in this area.

P5 Celebrate their Cultures

Health

In Health this week we celebrated our uniqueness. We designed our own culture wheels and then shared our own cultures with others.

Georgie – It doesn’t matter how you are different to other people.

Nakeal – Culture means who you are.

Keris – I learnt Emma likes football!

Bella – I was surprised that Monika likes football.

Mason – I was surprised that Shantelle likes Ariana Grande

We continued practising our rugby skills but this week went outside in the playground!

We also played games inside. These games encouraged us to listen to instructions, think carefully, keep fit and have fun!

Georgie – I liked the ship game.

Maths

We have now finished learning about time and are about to start our new topic – ‘Shape’.

Bella – I am much better at using a time line to calculate time intervals

Literacy

In literacy we continued to read our group novels with our partner and practised using various strategies to improve fluency.

Then we drew a picture using evidence from the text in a visualisation task that allowed us to show our understanding of what we had read.

We wrote a summary of what we had read in our own words – only including key information – but we agreed this was a skill we needed to continue to practise.

First News Group

The P7 group working with Mrs Hillan using First News Comprehension are starting to really get into this! They are enjoying looking at a variety of real-life news articles and completing questions on these as well as giving their opinions on certain parts of the subject matter. The pupils earn points with each correct answer and can also gain extra points with their written responses when giving their opinions.

Lewis said his biggest success today was “answering more questions correctly and gaining more points.”

When asked what she enjoyed most, Katy said “I enjoyed the Mouse Deer activity.” This was due to it being a unique creature that she hadn’t come across before!

Jack said “I learned how to read more carefully today!”

This week in P3/4

What a great week we have had!

P.E

We continued learning different skills in gymnastics. This week the children were supporting one another while learning how to safely do handstands, cartwheels and forward rolls.

Numeracy

We continued discussing our number strategies in number talks. The children were given the challenge to come up with different strategies to make or get to a variety of 3-digit numbers. We have also been using number strategies to helps us with our multiplication. Repeated addition is a popular choice!

Maths

We were used a holistic approach this week in time. We were using real life situations and story telling to practice telling the time. We even explored using the 24hr method of telling the time. The children were great at this!

Topic

We have been investigating the routes that the Viking took from Scandinavia during the great invasion. The children labelled maps of the United kingdom and Scadinavia to show where the Viking homelands were and where they invaded.

We also identified different societal roles within the Viking community. Ask them all about it. The class were asked what role they would prefer in this community and of course the majority wanted to be a karl, this means free!

Literacy

We finished this week working on our informal letter writing skills. The children wanted to write a letter to thank Fiona at Morrisons in Carmondean for a fantastic tour during our last participation Friday. We used paragraphs to space out the different sections of our letter.

I can’t wait for next week!

Boomwhackers!

Music

This week we made music using Boomwhackers. The different sizes represent different pitches. We tapped them on the ground and made a tune using different notes. It was great fun!

P.E.

We continued learning about rugby and developed our tackling skills this week.

Science

We learnt about the skeletal system.

Monika – I enjoyed labelling a skeleton. Some of us even challenged ourselves to use the medical names of the bones.

Lacey – I was surprised about how many bones there were in my hand! I thought there was only one!

Keris – I learnt that each forearm has 2 bones!

Georgie – I was surprised to learn how easily a dinosaur’s bones could break.

Mason – I couldn’t believe that giraffes have the same number of bones as humans!

Numeracy

We have been practising our mental strategies in Number Talks and we are now concentrating on our subtraction skills.

Maths

We are much more familiar with the concept of time and this week used timelines to help add and subtract time.

Our next steps will be to answer questions about timetables.

Literacy

We used various strategies to work out the meaning of unknown words in group reading.

When writing we practised creating a text from the perspective of a character in our group novel. In pairs we wrote what wish that character would like to receive and how it would effect their life.

Participation Friday

We are planning to hold a party for the residents at nearby Restondene.

We all have different responsibilities and are undertaking different tasks in preparation for the event.

Lewis wrote a formal letter to Mrs Wood asking her to help us prepare some food.

After School Clubs

Bella – I enjoyed Taekwondo; learning about the scissor kick was fun.

A Gentle Reminder !

Some children have still not returned the first reading books they were given at the start of P5. When they are finished and have been returned a new book can be given.

Another busy week in Primary 3

We have been working hard all week.
In language, we are learning the ‘oi’, ‘ea’ or ‘sh’ sounds.  We have been making our words using magnetic letters, and we are trying to spot these words in our reading texts.

We have been writing reports about the 50th birthday celebration last week.

In our topic work, Barnaby bear has finished his travels in Scotland.  We had the opportunity to look at some artwork by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.  We tried making our own pictures of roses in the Mackintosh style.  In PE we have been working on linking some dance steps together to make a dance in the style of a Scottish Country Dance.  We are having great fun!

In maths, we have been learning to count forwards and backwards in 10’s.  We don’t always start on a 10 number – sometimes we try 3,13,23,33.  It is a challenge when we cross over 100, but we are practising every day.  In money, we have been adding up coins, and beginning to calculate change.

This week in P2

We have had a great week in class. In numeracy, we learnt about place value with numbers up to 20. We used five wise and pair wise ten frames to help us work out the tens and units.

We have also been practising counting in 5s and we are getting great at it!

In topic, we worked as one big team to create a timeline of the Dinosaurs. We found it tricky to spell all of the different words but we challenged ourselves and did a great job!

Our baby Dinosaurs hatched! We were so excited to see what kind of Dinosaur they were!

We have also started reading a new class novel called “The Witches”. Getting comfy in the reading area to read the next chapter is something we all look forward to. Ask us how to spot a witch and see if we can remember!
