This week in P3/4

 

What a great week we have had!

P.E

We continued learning different skills in gymnastics. This week the children were supporting one another while learning how to safely do handstands, cartwheels and forward rolls.

Numeracy 

We continued discussing our number strategies in number talks. The children were given the challenge to come up with different strategies to make or get to a variety of 3-digit numbers. We have also been using number strategies to helps us with our multiplication. Repeated addition is a popular choice!

Maths

We were used a holistic approach this week in time. We were using real life situations and story telling to practice telling the time. We even explored using the 24hr method of telling the time. The children were great at this!

Topic

We have been investigating the routes that the Viking took from Scandinavia during the great invasion. The children labelled maps of the United kingdom and Scadinavia to show where the Viking homelands were and where they invaded. 

We also identified different societal roles within the Viking community. Ask them all about it. The class were asked what role they would prefer in this community and of course the majority wanted to be a karl, this means free!

Literacy

We finished this week working on our informal letter writing skills. The children wanted to write a letter to thank Fiona at Morrisons in Carmondean for a fantastic tour during our last participation Friday. We used paragraphs to space out the different sections of our letter.

Boomwhackers!

Music

This week we made music using Boomwhackers. The different sizes represent different pitches. We tapped them on the ground and made a tune using different notes. It was great fun!

P.E.

We continued learning about rugby and developed our tackling skills this week.

Science

We learnt about the skeletal system.

Monika – I enjoyed labelling a skeleton. Some of us even challenged ourselves to use the medical names of the bones.

Lacey – I was surprised about how many bones there were in my hand! I thought there was only one!

Keris – I learnt that each forearm has 2 bones!

Georgie – I was surprised to learn how easily a dinosaur’s bones could break.

Mason – I couldn’t believe that giraffes have the same number of bones as humans!

Numeracy

We have been practising our mental strategies in Number Talks and we are now concentrating on our subtraction skills.

Maths

We are much more familiar with the concept of time and this week used timelines to help add and subtract time.

Our next steps will be to answer questions about timetables.

Literacy

We used various strategies to work out the meaning of unknown words in group reading.

When writing we practised creating a text from the perspective of a character in our group novel. In pairs we wrote what wish that character would like to receive and how it would effect their life.

Participation Friday

We are planning to hold a party for the residents at nearby Restondene.

We all have different responsibilities and are undertaking different tasks in preparation for the event.

 

Lewis wrote a formal letter to Mrs Wood asking her to help us prepare some food.

After School Clubs

Bella – I enjoyed Taekwondo; learning about the scissor kick was fun.

A Gentle Reminder !

Some children have still not returned the first reading books they were given at the start of P5. When they are finished and have been returned a new book can be given.

Another busy week in Primary 3

We have been working hard all week.
In language, we are learning the ‘oi’, ‘ea’ or ‘sh’ sounds.  We have been making our words using magnetic letters, and we are trying to spot these words in our reading texts.

We have been writing reports about the 50th birthday celebration last week.

In our topic work, Barnaby bear has finished his travels in Scotland.  We had the opportunity to look at some artwork by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.  We tried making our own pictures of roses in the Mackintosh style.  In PE we have been working on linking some dance steps together to make a dance in the style of a Scottish Country Dance.  We are having great fun!

In maths, we have been learning to count forwards and backwards in 10’s.  We don’t always start on a 10 number – sometimes we try 3,13,23,33.  It is a challenge when we cross over 100, but we are practising every day.  In money, we have been adding up coins, and beginning to calculate change.

 

This week in P2

We have had a great week in class. In numeracy, we learnt about place value with numbers up to 20. We used five wise and pair wise ten frames to help us work out the tens and units.

We have also been practising counting in 5s and we are getting great at it!

In topic, we worked as one big team to create a timeline of the Dinosaurs. We found it tricky to spell all of the different words but we challenged ourselves and did a great job!

Our baby Dinosaurs hatched! We were so excited to see what kind of Dinosaur they were!

We have also started reading a new class novel called “The Witches”. Getting comfy in the reading area to read the next chapter is something we all look forward to. Ask us how to spot a witch and see if we can remember!

Deans Den

Many thanks to all visitors who came to help celebrate Dean’s Primary School 50th birthday. It was very well attended and our visitors were impressed with the children’s learning and classroom environments.

This week in Deans Den we have been focusing on how to be a good friend and how our actions and words may affect others. We read the story of The Rainbow Fish and learned how important it is to share with others. With a little help from Mrs Morrison, the boys and girls are trying to demonstrate this skill during their time in the den and also in the primary one classrooms.

We are all excited to be taking part in the school nativity and we had our first listen to some of the songs we have to practise. A lot of hard work and fun ahead in the coming weeks!!

P6/7

It was great to see so many people at our school birthday celebrations last week. Our class really enjoyed seeing everybody and sharing their learning. The visit from the ice cream van was also a firm favourite for pupils!

Our class have been discussing changes they would like to make to their learning environment. So far we have incorporated a new library area with new books from the main school library. Pupils are looking forward to adding to their book collection next week. Classes have been allocated some money for pupils to select a range of new books from Waterstones. This follows on from our reading ambassadors visit to the Livingston branch to select some books by their favourite authors. These included Michael Morpurgo, Emma Carroll and David Walliams.

Pupils have further plans to develop/ improve their classroom by adding in inspirational posters and LED strip lighting. A common request was also to buy in new Together Time and wet play activities.

This week we have been working on some Winter poetry and trying to incorporate descriptive language techniques. We described scenes using our senses, alliteration, similes, metaphors and personification. Our pupils will be creating a display of the work for everyone to see.

Library changes

In P5/6 We got £200 pounds to use to spend on books of our choices. We liked goosebumps, the school of good and evil, Pokemon, beast quest, ink trilogy, tom gates, fairy books,  detective pikachu , and we have aso been doing   Maths in class this week in maths we’ve been using empty number lines.

Primary 2/1 Learning Breakfast.

On Tuesday we held our Learning Breakfast and what a success it was! It was lovely to open up our classroom to all of our parents and carers to share and demonstrate the super learning which takes place on a daily basis.

We started off our morning in the dinner hall with the most delicious breakfast of pancakes, croissants and fruit, all made by our talented dinner ladies – Thank you so much for feeding us all!

It is safe to say the Primary 2/1 pupils gave the breakfast a big thumbs up!

After we had filled our tummies we went back to the classroom to share some of our Numeracy Learning.  We were able to share what we were learning, how we were learning and why. It was great to be able to demonstrate our addition skills, counting and sequencing in tens and all the ways we can use Numicon.
