Latest News from Primary One

Each week Primary 1 will be sharing their learning with you through our class blog. This week we enjoyed sharing our holiday experiences and drew some super detailed pictures of places we visited and activities we took part in.

Literacy

We have been working hard to learn 2 new sounds – s and p. To help us with our letter formation we have created “Sammy Snakes” and “Popcorn P’s” (fantastic sensory experience!).

We are learning about our story book characters Kipper, Biff, Chip and of course Floppy the dog! The children are enjoying discussing their adventures and are beginning to recognise some of the words (big thank you for all your support with homework tasks)

Numeracy

This week we have been focusing on creating groups of 7 and 8. The children can make 7 and 8 in a number of ways (3+4, 5+3 etc. using concrete materials) – ask them, challenge them!! this is a very important skill and we are all working hard to develop this.

Other areas

We all love autumn, we have been on an autumn walk and collected lots and lots of leaves. We have used the leaves to create pictures, to order smallest to largest and to sort according to shape. We especially enjoyed reading The Little Acorn which has helped us to understand the life cycle of the acorn.

Participation Friday

Our focus is  Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. We made bookmarks from recycled materials and took them to local shops to give to customers to encourage them to think about how small changes can make a big difference. (pictures will appear in next weeks blog)

Next Week HIghlights- Halloween Disco and preparations for Deans Big Birthday Celebrations.

Have a great week!!

Welcome to Dean’s Den

A big welcome from Dean’s Den!! This week we have been working on improving our listening skills, using song and actions to help us.   We also enjoyed exploring a variety of stories, including The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s child by Julia Donaldson. We have enjoyed them so much that we can retell most of the story, using props to help us!!!

We look forward to developing our learning further in the coming weeks.

P5’s First Blog Entry

We have enjoyed our holidays but made a busy start to the new term this week!

Maths

Eva – Our new topic is time.

Lewis – We found it tricky at first.

Bella – We have been revising how to tell time using quarter to and past.

Nakeal – I know how to tell the time using quarters much better now.

We have also practised how to tell the time in 5 minute intervals. Next we will work on telling the time to the nearest minute, using am and pm, calendars and the 24 hour clock.

Literacy

We have written some fantastic descriptive pieces using our different senses.

Georgie – I enjoyed writing about my favourite place.

Nicholas – We practised describing in detail.

Music

On Thursdays we have a fantastic music workshop called ‘Move to the Beat’ which the children have been enjoying immensely.

Maia – I like dancing to the music.

Lacey – I like the diddly dum game!

Topic

Our topic is Europe and this week we have continued to work on our Power Points and posters about a chosen European country with a friend.

Art

Liam – I enjoyed the surrealist artwork.

We looked at various pieces of Surrealist artwork including some from Rene Magritte, a Belgian surrealist painter. Then we created our own surrealist work.

Please Note

Next week the children can bring in the homework they have done this month to share with the class.

The children can change the two reading books they have been given when they have finished them.

P.E. is on a Monday and Wednesday – ideally the children should have suitable P.E. kit to change into.

We would also like to invite you to our Learning Breakfast on 7th November (more details to follow next week.)

We have been preparing some 1970s activities to share with you during our 50th birthday celebrations on 8th November. The children will be sharing what they have learnt and seem to be particularly excited about the 70s style dancing they have been practising! They are looking forward to teaching visitors some GROOVY MOVES!

This week Primary 3 have a new topic

We had an exciting reveal about our new topic.  A suitcase and a bear with a map arrived in our class. The bear is called Barnaby and we are going to learn about our own country and perhaps some different countries with him.  This week, we have been learning about Scotland, and we can now locate it on a world map.

We have started to learn more about money.  Today was a non-uniform day and we were collecting coins for charity.  (Roman)  First, we sorted all our coins and grouped the same kinds together.  We had £1’s, 50p’s, 20p’s and 10p’s.  Then we added each type of coin up.  Last we added all the totals up and we had £11.10 altogether. (Erin)

On Wednesday, we went for a walk outside to the field and we collected some leaves (Gracie).  The leaves are falling from the trees now that it is Autumn.  When we came inside we wrote acrostic poems about leaves. (Joseph)

Garden Gang

Garden Gang have been getting into the spirit of Halloween with Ms Webster. They have been working on various Halloween themed art and craft activities and have worked together to create this spooky display outside the Garden Gang room.

P6/7

P6/7 have settled down quickly after the October holidays. We are busy making plans for the celebrations to mark the school’s big birthday. Our class will be learning about events and life in the 1960’s and are planning activities to share with our visitors. Some pupils have asked if they can dress in 1960’s style clothing on the special day and it is completely optional. (Please don’t buy anything special for this as it’s just for the one morning.)

On another note tomorrow – 25th October –  is a dress down day in school.  If you would like to send in a donation, we are collecting money for our supported child Segenet from Ethiopia.

We have been revising basic maths processes for Smart start tasks in the morning and the class are enjoying this challenge. It would be really helpful if you could remind your child to learn their times tables at home. We have been working on place value and will move onto decimals and fractions next. Everyone is looking forward to it!

In literacy we have been developing our descriptive skills and your child should be able to tell you what similes, metaphors and personification are. Please ask them about this.

Before the holidays we were learning about natural disasters such as earthquakes. Our new topic this term will be Japan and everyone has great suggestions for aspects they would like to learn about.

In gym we have been developing skills in basketball and team games. The class are also loving the zumba sessions we use for brain breaks. We use the Go Noodle site for this which is free to access from home in case your child wants to try some zumba with you.

Signs of Autumn in P2/1

Down in Primary 2/1 we have been embracing all things autumnal. We all decided that  it was our favourite season where we can wrap up warm, drink hot chocolate, go trick or treating on Halloween and most of all look at all the wonderful colours that autumn produces.

We have spent some time outside going on a autumn walk to collect lots of natural materials so we can produce some ‘transient art’. This means art that can move around. We had lots of fun using our imagination to make pictures and then using our ICT skills to take the perfect picture with the ipad.  Here are some examples of our work.

We had lots of leaves left over so we decided to make some leaf people, we added eyes, arms and legs. They look super cute!

We spent some time investigating the leaves and looking at the patterns of their tiny veins. We painted them and printed them onto paper using autumnal colours and we also used crayons to create a leaf rubbing pictures.

At the moment our favourite story is The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson. We are enjoying using our new puppet theater to retell the story using all the different voices of the characters in our own words. We love how the book rhymes too. We made a Gruffalo tuff tray too so we can act out the story with all the characters and make up our own stories too, we even added some new characters. We especially love the snake and his log pile house.
