Measuring in P2

In math’s P2 have been learning about measure. We all put our measuring skills to the test using informal units. Our focus was on length and height. Firstly, we worked in pairs to estimate the length or height of a classroom object. Then we measured it and recorded our results. We also compared objects and tried to use language such as short/shorter, long/longer, tall/taller.

Emily measured one of our books and was able to explain that it was 27cm long!

Ciaran had a great idea and used two rulers to measure the height of a chair. He was able to explain that by adding the two measurements together he would find the total.

The following day, we all focussed on using rulers to measure length in (cm). We made objects, shapes and lines out of play dough to measure! Although our focus was on whole numbers, some of us were able to understand and measure in cm with a decimal point.

Literacy

In pairs we tried a new literacy game called read and roll. We sounded our words out that had our sounds in them that we had been learning this week. We did this with a partner and it was great fun!

On Thursday morning, we were looking at the purpose of persuasive writing. We have focussed on this before, but we wanted to have one last go at it! As we all knew, the Deans Gala Day was on Saturday so we decided to create a persuasive poster that included some persuasive sentences to encourage people to attend. Miss Beattie was very impressed with our eye catching posters and the ideas/sentences we came up with that would convince others to come along!

P2 were also learning about the responsibilities of owning a pet. The RSPCA kindly gave us some resources to use in class. We were given a travel cage that had 2 robotic rabbits in it, a water bottle, 2 food bowls, a syringe (without the needle) and a blanket. As a class, we discussed the importance of having the right products for good rabbit ownership. We each got a chance to handle the robotic rabbits to demonstrate how to hold a rabbit properly, especially so the animal feels safe.  We gained lots of knowledge and we feel more confident about caring for pets such as rabbits.

The RSPCA also had a chat with P1-3 and gave us more information about pets and wild animals in Scotland.

Finally, it was time to say goodbye to 4 of our little amphibian friends. They started off as frog spawn and we watched them grow from tadpoles into little froglets. As the froglets now have lungs they need to eat small insects which we can’t provide them with in class, so it was time to release them back into the wild. Miss Beattie dropped them off at a local pond where they can now grow into adult frogs!
