Calderwood Commitments (Actions):
Calderwood Communication (For information):
  • A gentle reminder that following West Lothian Policy, no dogs are permitted in the playground. Unfortunately, we do not have the capacity to set up individual arrangements for families with dogs who require their children to be brought to the gate.
  • We understand that life is busy for everyone and occasionally items for school can be forgotten or daily routines change last minute. Currently, we are experiencing a large number of forgotten items (lunch boxes, break time snack, clothing) dropped off in the morning or last minute messages needing passed on to children about pick up time, this results in other office tasks not being able to be actioned. If children do occasionally forget their break time snack time, we do have fruit that they can take, so please don’t worry about having to make another trip to drop off a snack.

Winter Arrangements for Safe Routes to School/ Nursery

In the event of heavy snow the FMA (janitorial staff) will clear / salt one initial footpath, as below, to allow staff and pupils access to the school safely. The other footpaths will be worked on by the FMA teams as soon as possible, during the daylight hours following completion of the existing essential duties.

The school carpark is under the responsibility of roads, therefore we can not guarantee that the carpark will be gritted before the start of the school day. Priority will be given to access roads then staff car parks/bus bays/turning areas (if applicable), this does not include playground areas.

As we use our playground to access the building, we have purchased some salt boxes for these areas and have asked our Parent Council for support from parents/ carers in the morning to help us grit the playground and the path between Glencoe Gate (bike shed) and the nursery door, if you can support with this please let us know.

The path highlighted below is the one that will be gritted on icy mornings. If there are changes to how we enter school in the morning due to extreme weather, champions will be be around to advise of the changes.

Common Cold Study -Elvis Kids

Recently, it was published evidence that nasal irrigation with salt water helped reduce the cold in adults. We have also shown the mechanism for how salt water helps with the common cold when applied on the nasal epithelium. Our research showed that cells use the chloride from the salt water to fight viral infections.  Hence, we are now testing if salt water nose drops helps children fight the cold.

If you have a child under 7 years of age, you may be able to join the fight.

The Children’s Hospital in Edinburgh are doing a study of salt water nose drops to see if it helps get rid of the cold faster.

Your child does not need to have a cold right now to take part!

You can join right now by calling/texting 07973657457 for an appointment to sign up and to be taught what to do the next time your child has a cold.

Your child does not need to attend.

Families completing the study will receive travel expenses and a £30 voucher to compensate for any inconvenience.

Book Donation

Book Week Scotland – Book Donation

Are you having a clear out of old books or do you have any books you have read and would like to pass on to others to enjoy?  If so, then as part of Book Week Scotland, we would like you to donate any books that you no longer need or use to our school libraries for the pupils to enjoy reading.

Book week Scotland takes place from Monday 14th November until Friday 18th November.  Throughout that week, pupils can bring in any books they would like to donate to our school.  They will receive a sticker to write their name on and place inside the book.

Bramble Clan Learning

Literacy

In reading and writing, we have been looking at the different building blocks that make up a story.  We have looked at the structure of a story, making sure we know all the names of the different sections and what should be included within each of these.  We even came up with our own actions to remind us what to include.  We looked at this further in our reading books and, after reading, we used the story mountain to show the plot of the story.

This week, we have been looking at the setting of a story.  After reading, we either drew or built the setting from our story, giving evidence from the text to back up our ideas.  We really enjoyed using Kapla, the building blocks and lego to build our settings.

Numeracy

In numeracy, we have been learning different strategies to support us when adding and subtracting.  We have been learning about the ‘round and adjust’ strategy and found this was an efficient way to add numbers if one of the numbers is close to a multiple of 10.  Some of us realised this might be a strategy that gets us to the answer quicker than if we used a different one.  We will continue to explore selecting the most efficient strategy in order to answer a calculation quickly.

We have also explored addition and subtraction word problems.  We used the method RUCSAC to support us in solving problems

R-Read

U-underline the words

C-circle the numbers

S-select the correct operation

A-answer the question

C-check the answer.

We worked in partners to solve the word problems.  Some us decided to act out the word problems which helped us to fully understand how to solve them.  We will continue to develop this in our learning.

IDL

In IDL, we have been learning about Myths and Legends.  We have been working across the clans and visiting other clan rooms and champions to develop our relationships with each other.  We have been able to work with others in our area and get to know each other better.  In each clan room we have been exploring what a fable, myth or a legend is and then listening to different stories from our champions.  We enjoyed listening to the story of the Kelpies this week and enjoyed building a scene from the story and including information about the origin of the story.  We have realised that stories change over time and are very different from the original!
