Climate Change

Rannoch clan have brought their learning about climate change to a close this week.  After learning about deforestation through our reading of The Lorax by Dr Seuss, some of us transformed ourselves into the Lorax to ‘speak for the trees’.  We used our new-found skills in persuasive writing to write a persuasive piece on what we could do as a community to look after the trees.  Fantastic pieces of writing were produced using a clear structure, sensing verbs and persuasive language.

Some pupils have been learning about waste with Miss Redmond and they went for a walk around Calderwood to look at what bins were available for waste and recycling.  Tjhey made a persuasive poster to persuade others to think more carefully about the waste we produce and how we dispose of it.

Some pupils learnt about transport and how this can affect our environment, with Miss Reid.  They completed a traffic survey of Calderwood and created air quality sensors for round the school.

Our final task was to use art to persuade the Calderwood community to look after our planet.  We discussed colour in art and thought about how we might use this in a picture showing our world in all its beauty and showing the world if we do not take action.  I am sure you will agree that everyone produced very powerful pictures, showing great persuasive techniques through art.

All in all, we have had a very interesting and informative look at climate change and have many ideas on what we can do to support our planet moving forward.

Well done to all in Rannoch clan.

Autistic Missing Person Protocol

The Autistic Missing Person Protocol has been developed by Police Scotland in consultation with Scottish Autism and is being piloted throughout Lothian and Scottish Borders. It is a simple risk reduction tool to help individuals, families, schools and other organisations assist Police in the event of an autistic adult or child going missing. The form can also be used for child who have autism traits but no formal diagnosis or who are currently undergoing assessment for ASD.

It consists of a form which contains vital information about sensory needs, communication abilities, responses and reactions, favourites places and a photograph with consent to share on social media (if needed). The form can be passed to Police at the point the vulnerable child or adult is reported missing and avoids unnecessary delays in gathering information at a time of crisis. As well as keeping a copy of the form at home, we would also be happy to keep a copy in your child’s Personal Pupil Record at school.

A copy of the form and further information can be found here: https://bit.ly/AMPP77 and school staff will be happy to support with completion of the form.

Calderwood Goes Planting!

Today all the Clans had the opportunity to get outdoors, braving the rain, and plant bulbs. We were really excited to spend time with different Clans – Ben Lawers and Ben Lomond should be so proud of the support they gave to younger children in our community.

We did this to play our part in the nationwide Edina Bulb Project – you can find out a little more about this by clicking here. We were really excited to explore our learning about the needs of a plant even further and cannot wait to see these bulbs begin to sprout in spring!

Running Week at Calderwood

Click Here for our Promo Video!

This week is WL Running Week. Our partner Active Schools have set us a challenge to complete a running race of various distances. Our results will be shared across West Lothian up against the other schools.

We’ve also been working on these 3 challenge questions to stimulate our interest in running and its benefits.

  • How can we promote our Running Event?
  • How can we record / measure our runs – any digital ideas?
  • What makes an effective runner?

Click the Sway below to see the launch of Running Week. We will update this Sway throughout the week with any action!

Christmas Card Orders

Dear Parents/Carers,

This week your children will have ownership in designing their own Christmas Cards as part of a School Fundraiser!

Your child will bring their design home with an order form. If you’d like to order any copies of your child’s design please return the form to school by Friday 22nd October.

We apologise for the fast turn around, due to our move into Calderwood we had lots of other tasks to focus on. However, we don’t want to miss out on this opportunity.

We appreciate your continued support and look forward to seeing the children’s designs! Furthermore, we will look towards using a range of art materials in the future.

Many Thanks
