Calderwood Commitments

  • Please ensure you have registered your child on parent portal and that your details are up to date. West Lothian Council are now using this system for our annual data checks and EE2 forms for excursions. You can find advice here. The details you used on enrolment must be the same as the details you enter to enrol on parent portal, we recognise that a lot of families are requiring support with this and the office champs are working through emails and voice messages.

  • 13th, 16th, 17th September: School closed for September Break.
  • 26/09/24: 2:00-3:00pm. Drummond Clan Sharing the Learning: A visit to the clan room to find out about their numeracy context for learning and to look at your child’s jotters. One adult per child please. Please enter through the Glenshee Gate (Nethershiel Road) and through the Drummond Cloakroom.
  • 01/10/2024: 6:00-8:00pm: Parent Council Meeting 1: In the Arena or on Zoom
  • 04/10/2024: 9:15-10:15am: Clan Connects: Baird Doors Open 9:05am. An opportunity for your children to share on stage their learning in the Arena and then you can look at their jotters in the café. 2 adults per child. Please enter through the front doors.
  • 07/10/2024 – 08/10/2024: Tempest School Photo Days (note the change that this is now two days) Please ensure your child wears school uniform and no PE Kits. We can lend P7s ties, Primary 7 ties for those who would like to wear one for the photo. If parents have a PVG we are looking for volunteers to support with the running of this.

  • Thank you for everyone who attended our Meet the Clan/ Champion event this week. We would invite you to complete this short form about the event.
  • Our Primary 6 clans are going to create a podcast as part of their young STEM group, if you have experience of this and could speak to the group, please let Miss Connor know via the office.
  • Primary 4-6 clans have been learning about descriptive writing, you can find out more about their learning here, in their blog posts.
  • Primary 1 – 3 Seesaw: Seesaw is place for champions and children to share their learning and process between home and school. It is not a platform for direct communication with champions, this should be done through the school office.

Routines:

  • Parking: There are spaces in our carpark for blue badge holders, only those with a blue badge should park in this space. There is no parking along the side of the building on the Nethershiel Road.
  • Smart watches: Children should please have smart watches in school mode during the school day, they are not permitted to take photos, use it to communicate, etc.
  • Lunches: Please ensure you have ordered your child’s lunch at home using your iPay log in. Families who want their child to have a sandwich pack lunch from the school kitchen on a Friday, should order this by 9:30am on a Thursday. Primary 6 and 7 lunches cost £2.20. You can find out more information here on how to use iPay. Due to severe allergies in school we request that you do not send foods with nut ingredients for break and lunch time snacks.

  • 06/09/2024: Primary 7 Fundraiser: iPay will be open for donations from 2nd to 6th Sept or children can bring along change for donations for activities on the day. Find out more information here.
  • Please complete and return the NHS immunisations forms that were sent home last Friday.

Routines:

  • Morning Gates: As children arrive to drop off their bikes for breakfast club they can open the gates to access the bike shed (they are closed but not locked). At morning drop off there are staff in the playground and on the gate from 8:25am – 8:45am, please do not enter the playground before or after this time.
  • Wet morning arrangements: When there is heavy rain in the mornings, there will be no champions on the gate as they are all supervising clans inside. Your child should enter the building during the playground/ STEM (corner door) and adults can walk their child up to the door. Children arriving after 8:45am should go to the office as normal.

  • Friday: A reminder that on a Friday school finishes for P1, P2 and Doune at 11:55am and at 12:00pm for the other clans.

  • School Office: Our school office opening hours are 8:20am-3:30pm (12:15pm on a Friday). Outwith these times you can leave a voicemail or send an email which will be picked up between 8:20am-3:30pm
  • Electric Scooters: A reminder that E-scooters can only be used on private land with the permission of the land owner.

Sewing Primary 1

Following our Froebelian approach in Primary 1, we are starting to embed our Froebelian occupations. Froebel’s occupations connected children’s first-hand experiences in their local communities with creative materials to communicate, develop physical and problem-solving skills.

Through the school year pupils have the opportunity to carry out woodwork and use clay in their clans. Champions would like to expand our occupation experiences by include sewing.

Sewing is a life skill and sustainability is a global priority. Being able to
mend or make clothes reduces waste. It is also a way to express ideas and feelings and can be an art form in itself.

If anyone would like to donate:

  • a variety of needles (plastic or metal with large eye holes)
  • pin cushions
  • fabric scissors
  • a selection of different coloured embroidery thread
  • some easy-to-handle fabric such as block weave fabric (for example Binca or Hessian)
  • buttons, laces or ribbons
  • fabric offcuts/samples

If anyone has an interest in sewing and would like to share this with our pupils please get in touch with Miss Connor.

Loose Parts Primary 1- Primary 3

We are looking for donations of loose parts and sewing materials for our Primary 1- Primary 3.

Loose-parts play is a type of open-ended play-based learning that encourages children to use their creativity and imagination. The phrase ‘loose parts’ refers to the variety of natural and man-made objects that children use. Loose-parts play is accessible for children of all ages and abilities. Loose parts can be anything – the aim is to allow children to engage with the materials in an imaginative way.

Examples of Loose Parts that could be donated:
Pebbles/Stones, Pine cones, Shells, Buttons, Beads, glass gems, bubble wrap, pegs, bottle caps/jar lids, material offcuts, ribbons.

Pupil Council: The Challenge

For our new school year we have to vote in our new pupil council for 2024-2025.

The expectation for all pupils wishing to be part of our council is to undergo a challenge.

Calderwood Communication:

  • Thank you for ensuring your child is wearing school uniform, it is important to us that all our children feel they are part of our Calderwood family. Please ensure all items of clothing including jackets and lunch boxes have your child’s name on them, as we already have a number of lost property items with no names. A reminder that black sweatshirts are not part of our uniform. We would also recommend that your child brings a jacket every day, as some children have been caught out with no jacket this week in the rain. We suggest that children keep a pair of old shoes in school to change into if they want to play on the grass when the grass is damp/ wet.
  • You will find the E Days for this term here, and a note of the PE uniform they can wear to school on those days.
  • Calderwood Primary has now grown to 24 clans and 555 pupils, with this in mind we would request that you try to ensure that your child comes to school prepared, including bring a snack, their packed lunch if required, water bottle and knowing how they are getting home each day. We understand emergencies and last minute changes can happen, however on a daily basis there are a large number of forgotten lunch boxes, water bottles and snacks dropped off at the office. We can cannot guarantee that these items will reach the child on time.

  • We have really enjoyed welcoming back all our children and clans this week, especially our 100 new Primary 1s! It has been an exciting start to Chapter 4 with our new extension opening and having a huge outdoor area to play in.

  • It’s ready! Next week our extension will be handed over from Morrisons to West Lothian Council. Thank you so much to Morrisons who have helped us to feel a part of the journey. Yesterday, some of our Pupil Council reps were excited to be the first children to walk through the magic doors into our extension today! They also got to meet some important visitors, we are looking forward to sharing the photos soon.

  • Even the rain didn’t stop our traditional end of term Calderwood Conga!
  • This term’s winning house was Roe House Pupils voted for a Pyjama Party with lots of games and treats. A great time was had by all.
  • Calderwood Clan Championships: Well done to all our pupils who won races at our recent sporting event! You can see their pictures here. Thank you to the parent council for purchasing the medals and stickers.
  • This week we have celebrated our Ben Lawers and Ben Lomond Clans of 2024! They performed a fun and emotional connects for their families and marked leaving Calderwood by having a clan meal at Nandos. We wish them lots of luck on the next part of their adventure at West Calder High School.

 

  • And just like that we have reached the end of Chapter 3, and what an adventure it has been! Chapter 3 saw the biggest growth to date at Calderwood with new clans, children, families and champions. We have had so many achievements this session and have made a lot of progress with our improvement journey, a huge thank you to our champion team for making this possible! Thank you also to you for all your support over the year. Happy holidays everyone, we will see you all in Chapter 4!

  • Meet the champion: Our children were very excited to meet their champion and clan again this week, they used the opportunity to get to know each other.
  • C in the Park: Thank you to all our children who performed at C in the Park, and our community groups. Despite the weather, it was great to see so many families enjoying the festival! Thank you to everyone who made this possible! You can find some photos here.
  • Mr Henderson leaves us at the end of term, we would like to say thank you for his enthusiasm and commitment to our team. We wish him lots of luck in his new adventures.

Medical: End of term pick up and August drop off

End of Term Collection

If your child has any medication in school please collect at the school office before end of day on Friday 28th June. If it is not collected, it will be destroyed.

A medication letter reminder has been sent to those pupils who don’t have an inhaler in school, as these can now be kept securely in school over the summer. If you wish to collect any inhalers, please get in touch with the school office.

August: Medication Drop off

Miss Connor will be in school on Thursday 8th August 12noon to 4pm and Friday 9th August from 8am-12noon if you wish to drop off medication for the year ahead, get updated photos taken for any allergies and complete new paperwork where required.
