WOW Badge Design Winners
WOW have launched their badge design and this year’s theme is Walk the Senses – we wanted pupils to tell us what they see, hear, smell, taste or feel as they walk or wheel to school. That might be the sound of birds singing, the smell of flowers or a tasty snack eaten on the way to school. Or it could be the feel of raindrops or snow on their skin – or spotting a rainbow in the sky! Our JRSO’s had the unenviable task of choosing 3 winners for Calderwood Primary School. Here are the winners whose design will now be entered into WOW’s badge design competition.
Well done and good luck to…

SSSA Alpine event Wed 21st Jan
The students who attended the SSSA Alpine event on Wednesday (travelling up to The Lecht in Strathdon) had a very successful day and represented Calderwood extremely well. As well as some incredible skiing, we were delighted to spot a Golden Eagle (native to the area) flying above our group. This was Rolf’s first time joining the team and competing in a competitive event, and he approached the experience with confidence and maturity. He demonstrated great resilience and maintained a very positive attitude throughout the day. Aaron competed in a higher age group, which presented a significantly greater challenge. Despite this, he delivered some impressive personal-best performances and showed excellent sportsmanship by enthusiastically supporting and encouraging his school team. Both Ruairidh and Rolf achieved podium finishes in the U10 category:
Ruairidh 🥈
Rolf 🥉
Well done to the team for their effort, attitude, and conduct throughout the event.

WOW Travel Tracker
Calderwood Primary School has started to use the award-winning WOW Travel Tracker bringing walks to school challenge to life.
What is WOW?
WOW is a pupil-led initiative where children self-report how they get to school every day using our interactive WOW Travel Tracker. If pupils travel sustainably at least once a week for a month, they are rewarded with a collectable monthly WOW badge.
Pupils will log daily journeys to school on the system. The WOW Travel Tracker also confirms which pupils have walked enough to earn a badge each month and these key statistics can be used to earn your school a Modeshift STARS award.
The WOW Travel Tracker can use icons instead of pupil’s names, but classrooms have the option to display name tags should they wish to. Our ‘Walk/ Wheel’ icon on Travel Tracker counts as an active journey. This icon includes pupils walking with the use of mobility aids, including wheelchairs or wheeled walkers.
WOW badges
WOW rewards children who travel actively to school with collectable badges. The badges are unique and designed by the pupils themselves in our annual WOW Badge Design Competition.
All of our WOW badges are made from recycled plastic material, including old fridge trays, plastic plates and even yoghurt pot off-cuts that were otherwise destined for landfill. They are produced locally in Cornwall, reducing our carbon footprint. The badges also arrive to schools in environmentally friendly, biodegradable packaging.
Please see some of the badges which have won so far!

Red House Party
Red house were the house point winners for term 1 (Aug – Dec). They had a house party on Friday 16th January. The pupils wore their pyjamas to school and had a snack and a drink while they watched Wallace & Gromit. We look forward to seeing who will win the house reward this term.

Calderwood Ski Team
The Calderwood ski team competed at the Boyd Anderson event at Hillend on Monday 8th December.
The team narrowly missed out on 3rd place, but we saw some incredible individual and team performances. Out of approximately 200 children, Aaron was the 4th fastest boy overall and the second-fastest P6. Ruairidh came 9th overall and was the fastest P4.
Charlie was our 3rd fastest racer, followed by Niamh, Harper, and Emily.
A special mention to Emily, who is new to skiing and competing in her first race—she impressively shaved 6 seconds off her time between her first and second run.
Well done to the team and we look forward to hearing about how they get on at future competitions.
