“Hope” Anti-Bullying Production

Calderwood Primary had a visit from “Take Away Theatre” last month, who performed “Hope”, an anti-bullying production, to our P4-7 clans.  P4 and P6 clans also participated in follow-up workshops.  The performance was delivered by professional actors and was thought-provoking and entertaining for the children.  The children were captivated throughout the performance.  The workshops for P4 and P6 clans provided the opportunity for the children to explore the issues raised in the performance in greater depth.  Through Health and Wellbeing lessons, children also completed activities in clan related to the performance.

Champion Conversations

A big thank you to our pupils who helped out at our recent Champion Conversations.  They did a great job of directing parents to the correct clan room.  They were polite, helpful and welcoming throughout the whole night.  Well done everyone.  

Caring Cafe Citizen Certificate

This week we launched our new lunchtime initiative – Caring Café Citizen Certificate.  We are looking for pupils to go above and beyond during lunchtime and respect our Café environment. Pupils who demonstrate being helpful and caring are then invited to sit at the High Chair area on a Thursday with a friend, they get a certificate home, 10 house points and are added to our Caring Café Collage.  Well done to our first winners.

British Science Week: Aberdeen

Through our topic, Voracious Victorians, Aberdeen Clan have learned about the impact of the Industrial Revolution and the many advancements in engineering made during this time. We have been learning about what life was like for a young brigger working on the Forth Bridge during the Victorian era through our class novel, Rivet Boy by Barbara Henderson. We have also investigated and compared toys from the past to the toys which we play with today.

We decided to design our own brand new toy designs for the Engineering Leaders Award Competition. We had to consider which problem our design would solve, how it would work, what materials would be used, and what it would look like. We then had to explain our design and write persuasively to convince the judges!

 

Lego Plea

Dear parents/carers,

As part of our School Improvement Plan, the Health and Wellbeing champs have been looking at creating clan Health and Wellbeing boxes.  We are issuing a plea for donations of unwanted Lego that we will put in to these boxes.  If you have any Lego at home that does not get used, even kits with missing pieces, we would be so grateful if you would hand this in to the office by Wednesday 20th March.

Safer Internet Day 2024

To celebrate Safer Internet Day, Ben Lawers took part in an investigation into Fake News. We looked at how to spot Fake News and which sources of information a reliable. We also had a go at creating our own Fake News stories, to see if we could fool our classmates.

Big Walk and Wheel: 11-22nd March

 

Calderwood has signed up for SUSTRANS big walk and wheel, which begins on Monday 11th March and runs until Friday 22nd March. We will be tracking how our children are getting to school – whether they walk/bike/scoot etc.

 

Previously we have won this competition and it would be great to win again!

Bluebell’s Fairtrade Learning

This week we have been learning about Fairtrade and cocoa farmers for our explanation writing. We learned about a group of farmers called the Kuapa Kokoo co-operative, which consists of approximately 65,000 farmers.

We learned what Fairtrade is and how it works. Fairtrade gives different farmers (for example banana, coffee and cocoa farmers) a fair price for their products. We made lots of notes about the different stages of cocoa bean farming and worked in pairs or independently to make a colourful and informative leaflet. We also used our genre targets to make sure that our writing followed the correct structure, used complex connectives amongst other things to make our writing as informative as possible. We also got to taste some Fairtrade chocolate and bananas to compare them to non-Fairtrade products.

All in all, it was very fun and interesting to learn about this topic.

Come and See Aladdin!

We are going to tell you about Calderwood’s first ever school show, Aladdin. 

Bramble and Bluebell have been practising a lot for their upcoming show. We have been trying really hard with our singing, dancing and acting so we can do our very best for our show. We can’t wait to perform in front of our parents and school and show them all of the new skills we have learned. 

At the Scottish celebration, P5 raised over £200 we were so happy we got all the money from the raffle. We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who donated items. With your help we have been able to buy face paint, costume and props to make our show even better. 

You should buy tickets to see the show for yourself. It will take place in the Arena on Monday 11th March at 2pm and Wednesday 13th March at 6pm.Tickets are £2 and will be on sale via iPay on 29th February. Get your tickets quick to make sure you don’t miss out. You will be amazed! 

We are proud of ourselves and our teachers for helping us create this show just for you.

Litter Pickers in the community.

During the February break- a group of 6 local children completed some litter picking in the local area- on one of the streets close to school (Cameron Gardens) which had been impacted by a lot of rubbish!

There was some amazing feedback regarding the six pupils. They gathered the rubbish with such enthusiasm and they managed to fill 12 rubbish bins of litter!!
This was also reported on the Calderwood Facebook page and received lots of praise from the local residents.
