Around the World in Bluebell Clan

This term, Bluebell clan are learning about different countries around the world, their climate and their characteristics. This week we have been learning about different types of deserts that can be found. We have used this as the topic for our information report this week, using non-fiction books to gather information to use in our texts. As a clan, we wrote the general statement and evaluation for the reports, ensuring that they included interesting sentence openers and adverbs.

Learners also worked in pairs to create a diorama of different deserts. The clan had the choice to create a hot or a cold desert and used different materials to add texture and colour to their designs.

Spring Art Club

A group of Primary 3 and 4 pupils have been taking part in our Spring Art Club. We have been working to develop creative skills such as line drawing, mixing paints to create different shades and using chalk pastels to create a variety of different artworks.

Glasgow Science Centre Learning Lab

On Wednesday 1st May, Ben Lomond and Ben Lawers were visited by the Glasgow Science Centre Learning Lab. We learned about different types of energy sources and took part in a number of exciting experiments. We then got to take part in our own investigations into different types of renewable energy. We would like to say a big thank you to Morrisons Construction, who kindly funded this experience for our Primary 7’s.

Aberdeen: Outstanding Olympians

In Aberdeen clan, we have been learning about the ancient origins of the Olympic games through our IDL focus, “Outstanding Olympians”. We were interested to learn that the upcoming Olympic games in Paris were inspired by the ancient games held in Olympia around 2800 years ago! We designed modern Olympic logos to represent the ancient beginning of the games and created short performances to re-enact a significant moment from the history of the games. Some clanmates also chose to build miniature Olympic stadiums inspired by ancient Greek architecture.

We have also enjoyed learning about some of the sports included in the Olympic games. In P.E., we have been perfecting our shape, balance, rolls and jumps in gymnastics. This week, we loved demonstrating our precision and agility on the balance beam!

Scottish Primary School Glee Challenge 2024

We are so proud of our wonderful Stag Squad, who took part in the Scottish Primary School Glee Challenge Edinburgh and Lothians Sectionals at Central Hall in Edinburgh on Thursday the 18th of April.  The Stag Squad were competing against 6 other amazing choirs.

Our Stag Squad were excellent and the scores in the sectional were extremely close, but unfortunately they did not make it through to the Regional Finals this year.
The children gave really great, high energy performances of both of their songs and had a really fun evening.
Some feedback from the judges was that they absolutely loved Stag Squad’s version of “The Whole of the Moon”.  The Stag Squad gave a superb, polished performance that showcased their wonderful teamwork, beautiful vocals and lovely movement.  They displayed great volume and energy, which really filled the auditorium with sound.
Huge thanks to everyone who came along to support our Stag Squad on the evening, and to our fabulous champions Miss Truesdale, Miss McEwan and Mrs Love who spent time rehearsing with the Stag Squad and accompanying them to the event.

Schiehallion and Thistle – Ocean Literacy Trip

On Tuesday 26th March 2024 Schiehallion and Thistle Clans had our second visit to Heriot-Watt University – we explored the University as a whole (including lecture theatres!), the National Robotarium and even spent time in the Oriam with an inflatable whale.

During the visit we learned all about Ocean Literacy and what happens when litter enters our waterways. We also had time with Whale experts and learned more about how robots can be used to film and interact with animals in their natural habitat.

Below are a number of pieces of learning inspired by our trip and photos of our trip:

P6 Euroquiz

Our amazing Schiehallion and Thistle Clans took part in the 2024 heats of Euroquiz alongside Primary Schools from across West Lothian on Thursday 21st March 2024. They were phenomenal ambassadors for the school and our top teams managed to achieve scores in the forties out of a total of 60 available points. Two teams came joint first place within our school with a gargantuan score of 43/60 respectively!
Many congratulations to St Joseph’s Primary School for scoring 55/60 and going forward to the Scottish Parliament for the next round. A huge thank you of course also goes to Zoe Gordon for facilitating and organising the Euroquiz and fuelling such an interesting, varied and expansive IDL topic at Calderwood Primary School.
