Schiehallion – Descriptive Writing

Over the last couple of weeks in Schiehallion we have been looking at descriptive writing. To begin with, we wrote a ‘cold piece’ to see what we managed to remember from last year. We wrote about Schiehallion, as we wanted to explore our namesake munro.

After we had written our cold pieces, we started to learn about how we should structure our descriptive writing. Alongside this, we worked on the type of language that you would find in this style of writing – focusing on nouns and adjectives.

We learned about different types of nouns – common, proper and collective – and then we identified these in a piece of writing about the Louvre Museum in Paris.

Our next step is to plan and write about our local area. Keep your eyes peeled for descriptive pieces about Calderwood estate coming your way.

Tummel: Description Writing

In Tummel Clan, we have been learning how to write a quality description. From our prior learning, we were able to discuss elements of the describing bubble which is used as a prompt to help us add interesting detail to our writing.

As Calderwood Clan Explorers investigating the meaning behind our clan name, we are beginning to learn about Loch Tummel. We listened to the story of “Gloomy the Misty Loch Monster”, making sure to listen to all of the words so that we could draw a detailed picture of Gloomy from the description. We decided we wanted to imagine our own sea creatures which we did, then described them to our partner to see how accurate their drawing would be!

Afterwards, we described our sea creature as a cold piece writing assessment. We were then able to reflect on what went well and think about what personal targets we could set to make our writing even better next time.

Rannoch Clan – Description Writing

In Rannoch this week we have started to look at descriptive writing. We began by writing our cold piece on a sea creature that we had designed and created in our art lesson. We made sure to add lots of detail so we had lots of parts to describe!

Since then, we have explored description writing further and started to look at the tools which will help us with writing. Rannoch enjoyed reading the Mr Men book about Mr Tickle and used this as our next descriptive writing piece. Firstly, we used the describing bubble to create a plan for our writing which helped us come up with some great adjectives to describe Mr Tickle. Then we looked at the correct structure of a descriptive piece.

Rannoch clan created some wonderful descriptions of Mr Tickle this week!

Burns clan – Descriptive Writing

In Burns clan we identified what we already know about descriptive writing, as we completed our cold assessment. A cold assessment means we had no help from our champion and everything we wrote about was based on all our amazing and creative knowledge from previous learning. Our topic was ‘all about me’ and we used a variety of adverbs, nouns and adjectives to create fantastic pieces of writing.

On Thursday we created a descriptive piece of art work to match our writing, we included lots of interesting and unique descriptive things about ourselves.

Later in the week, we explored what adjectives, adverbs and nouns are as we identified them in a text using highlighters, we also created beautiful posters for our wall to remind us of their definitions.

Tay Clan – Description Writing

To show what we know about writing a description text, Tay clan created their own sea creatures using line, shape and colour and then wrote a description. The more detail we added to our picture, meant that we would have more to describe in our writing.  We then wrote a description of our creatures. We tried to write interesting descriptions so that the reader could visualise our sea creature in their head.

We have built on what we know already by learning a bit more about description writing. We have learnt about the purpose of this writing, how to structure the text and have learnt an example description through actions with words called ‘Wolf Spiders’. This learning helped us to write our own description of Mr Tickle who is from the series of Mr Men and Little Miss books which we have loved listening to which show how we are all unique.

Descriptive Writing in Baird

This week, Baird clan have began to learn about descriptive writing. We started by creating self portraits that included visuals of our hobbies and interests. In reading, we used the game “Guess Who” to focus on using adjectives to describe others as well as ourselves.

Towards the end of the week, we completed our cold piece of descriptive writing, which included details about our physical appearance, our hobbies and interests and our goals for the future. We will use our feedback on this writing to help us to form our next steps for writing in the descriptive genre.

Ben Lawers – Description Writing 6.9.24

Hello Hello!

We have begun to explore description writing in Ben Lawers Clan. We have already written our cold piece to see how much we remember from last year. We wrote about our clan namesake, Ben Lawers.

Then Miss Quinn gave us feedback based on the description targets for P5.

Next, we have explored the key language features and structure of a descriptive text while also learning about a French landmark, The Lourve. We have identified proper, collective and common nouns. We have tried uplevelling sentences with adverbial phrases.

Our next step will be to plan and write a modelled text together, we will write all about The Calderwood Estate!

Parent Council Thank You

A big ‘Thank You’ to the Parent Council who helped us to buy new reading books.  There was a wide range of books purchased for all learners across the school.  We added extra copies of popular collections and added new fiction and non-fiction titles too.

Capturing Calderwood: Learning, Teaching & Assessment: May 2024

Recently we had a Capturing Calderwood Day, gathering evidence about learning, teaching and assessment. One of our pupil council children shared ‘Our champions help us feel our learning in our heart’.

Thank you to Broxburn Primary for joining us.

You can see some of the evidence in the Sway below.
