Leven Clan- Maths Week Scotland

This week as part of Maths Week Scotland, Leven Clan became Meteorologists!

Through our IDL topic – Calderwood Clan Explorers we have been learning about water, where it comes from and what creatures live in and around the water. The questions that everyone wanted to know was.. “Why does it rain so much at Calderwood?”.

In answer to this question we have explored the water cycle and why and how weather differs in different areas around the globe. We then used our knowledge of measurement to create a rain gauge from recycled plastic bottles.

Next week we will collect data from our rain gauges to measure how many centimetres of rain fall there has been.

Leven: Description Writing

In Leven clan, we began our learning about description texts by creating our own sea creatures using line, shape and colour. We then wrote a description explaining our creature to our peers. We tried to use interesting adjectives in order to bring our sea characters to life and make the description exciting for the reader.

This week, we have continued to develop our descriptive writing skills by using the ‘describing bubble’. We used the well known character of Mr Tickle as our stimulus and used as many adjectives and descriptive phrases as we could to describe him.

We then learned about the purpose and structure of a description text, developing our understanding further of each section.

Finally, we wrote our own description text about Mr Tickle, using the skills and knowledge that we have developed.

‘Our Clan is a Family’- Leven

Leven clan have had a fantastic start to P4, we have been working hard getting to know one another and  building our classroom community! We took part in a number of activities that allowed us to express ourselves and work co-operatively.

We explored the story “Our Class is a Family” and took part in a meaningful discussion about how we can make our clan a supportive and positive environment for all learners. We touched on important topics such as respect, growth mindset and kindness.

Leven clan also helped Mrs Bates lead our connects this week, where they introduced everyone to our first value ‘Belonging’. They presented what belonging meant to them and how they belong Calderwood.

Green Skills Circular Economy Challenge

This term, Ben Lomond and Ben Lawers have been taking part in the Circular Economy Challenge which is partnership with Young Enterprise Scotland. Pupils have developed their enterprising skills in a real-life context, giving them an understanding of the world of business, design and technology and have the opportunity to create a company, carry out market research, create a business plan and advertise their product or service with its own logo and tagline.

Last week, the Ben’s took part in a showcase event where each group pitched their business plan to a panel of judges. They were impressed with how knowledgeable and creative our young entrepreneurs were. Thank you to our wonderful judges for providing us with valuable feedback.

Ben Lomond and Ben Lawers- Foxlake Adventures

On Tuesday, Ben Lomond and Ben Lawers went on an exciting trip to Foxlake Adventures in Dunbar for a leavers’ trip.  P7 worked on team building and resilience, while tackling the inflatable aqua park. We had a fantastic time and lots of fun!  We would like to say a big thank you to Miss Stark for organising and our parent helper for accompanying us.

Business Ambassador Visit

Primary 7 have been taking part in the Green Skills Circular Economy Challenge. Each group has been working hard to create a sustainable product/service which  follows the Circular Economy principles. After working on creating the perfect business pitch, we were kindly visited by our Conor Gray from Morrison Construction, who listened to our pitches and gave us feedback. We will now be continuing to improve our pitches, in preparation for the final competition.

Spring Art Club

A group of Primary 3 and 4 pupils have been taking part in our Spring Art Club. We have been working to develop creative skills such as line drawing, mixing paints to create different shades and using chalk pastels to create a variety of different artworks.

Glasgow Science Centre Learning Lab

On Wednesday 1st May, Ben Lomond and Ben Lawers were visited by the Glasgow Science Centre Learning Lab. We learned about different types of energy sources and took part in a number of exciting experiments. We then got to take part in our own investigations into different types of renewable energy. We would like to say a big thank you to Morrisons Construction, who kindly funded this experience for our Primary 7’s.
