Maths Week Scotland – Ben Lawers

During the week beginning 21st September, Ben Lawers enjoyed taking part in Maths Week Scotland. Throughout the week, we explored maths in exciting and engaging ways, developing our problem-solving skills, teamwork and mathematical thinking.

One of the highlights of the week was participating in Mission M Possible. We worked together to complete a series of challenging maths missions which tested our reasoning, problem solving and collaboration skills. Each mission encouraged us to think carefully, try different strategies and persevere when tasks became tricky. It was fantastic to see everyone sharing ideas and supporting one another to solve the challenges.

We also enjoyed reading the story ‘How Many Legs?’. As we followed the animals throughout the book, we were challenged to find our own strategy for calculating the total number of legs. Rather than being told how to solve the problem, we explored different methods and explained our mathematical thinking to others.

Some children chose to draw pictures, while others organised their calculations using tables, addition and tally marks. It was fascinating to see the variety of approaches used across the class and how different strategies could all lead to the same answer.

Our challenge was to calculate the total number of legs throughout the story. We carefully recorded our thinking and compared our methods with our classmates. After checking our calculations, we discovered that the correct answer was 174 legs!

Maths Week Scotland reminded us that maths is about much more than getting the right answer. It is about asking questions, trying different approaches, learning from mistakes and explaining our thinking. We had a fantastic week and are looking forward to continuing our mathematical adventures throughout the year!

Clan Charter – Ben Lawers

Last week, in Ben Lawers, we discussed our rights and worked together to choose four rights for our clan charter. We talked about how we can respect these rights as right holders, and how our teacher, Miss Robertson can respect our rights as the duty bearer.

As our clan charter has a Disney theme, we each drew our favourite Disney character as our way of signing the charter.

We wonder which characters you can spot?
