Harry found 6 different items such as  :   soup tin   , calculator , egg, battery ,       tulip, candle

       
    egg 1 syllable

     tu -lip     2 syllables

   cal-cu-la-tor   4 syllables

Well done Harry great job !!!

Keeping Safe Online: Try at home activity 1

During this time technology has been at the forefront of keeping us all connected. Your young children may now be accessing and interacting with their devices now more than ever. Although we are so grateful that these devices, websites and apps exists the key important message of using them safely and responsibly must be emphasised to our young learners.

Harry the Hedgehog and Miss Collins took part in a try at home activity lesson from ThinkUKnow.co.uk.

First of all together they watched Episode One – Watching Videos (Click here to view video)

They then discussed how Jessie felt scared and had a worried feeling in her tummy when the crocodile appeared unexpectedly on screen. They sang the ‘Funny in my Tummy’ song and had a chat about what the lyrics meant. Who could be a trusted adult in Harry’s life? Harry then drew Miss Collins as his trusted adult, knowing that while using his device online if he saw anything that upset him he knew Miss Collins could help.

After watching the video can you also have a chat with your child about their feelings and draw a picture of their trusted adult/s. We would love to see their drawings or hear any important online safety messages they took from this activity, please share via twitter @WLBEYC or their learning from home tab on their Learning Journal.

Try at home ” Homemade play-dough ” Support Early Years Math’s .

Hello Everyone  🙂

We hope everyone is doing well 🙂

Everyone knows that Harry  likes to be busy trying new fantastic activities that support his learning.  Last night Harry came up with the idea of making homemade   play-dough.  Making and using  playdough was a great fun and developed Harry’s  understanding  of  a range of mathematical  concepts  including counting , measuring e.g. wight ,length  , shapes  ,developed problem solving and reasoning skills through trying out ideas ,and thinking about how to change them if they don’t work.  He would like to share with you all how to make a  play-dough.    

So your challenge is ” Make your own play-dough ”   

You can follow  Harry recipe 🙂

And if you want, you can add additional ingredients, e.g. paint or food coloring to the color palydough, scents  essence. And when your play dough is ready, you can make a nice playdough model by adding things that can be found in the garden or kitchen cabinet, e.g. stick, leaves, flowers, pebbles, rice, lentils, pasta, herbs, etc.

You will need ingredients such as  : flour , salt ,water  .
You will also need: a spoon, a large bowl, a cup.

And  follow Harry’s recipe ….
Put into a large bowl ;
2 cups of flour 

1 cup of salt

1 cup of water 

           

And mix it all together   until all ingredients turn into a  play-dough.       When Harry’s play dough was ready, he decided to stick 3 sticks he found in the garden, then took the pasta out of the cupboard, and put it one at a time on each stick … guess how many pasta he put .. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15 !!! Yes ”15” pieces of pasta well done 🙂

Try at Home Activity: Mark Making

Harry the Hedgehog had lots of fun taking part in yesterday’s try at home activity...

Inspiring and motivating your child to lift a pen/pencil to begin drawing can be difficult if the interest just isn’t there. During nursery sessions we have a variety of ways we can get our children excited about mark making. You could Provide a tray with different mediums in for example: Flour, lentils, dry sand, wet sand, soil, shaving foam, salt and lentils then ask your child to use their pointer finger and begin to play. Quickly you may notice a variety of mark making taking place. Before moving on to writing letters or numbers we suggest trying some pre-writing shapes first (The grown up could draw these on paper for the child to copy) these are:
Horizontal line, Verticle line, Circle, Intersecting cross, Diagonal line, Diagonal cross, Square and Triangle.

Following this you could then move on to letters in your child’s name and other familiar names/words.

Mindfulness Session with Mrs Hendry

Connecting with our minds and bodies is often easier said than done, when we are busy our mind can wander instead of focusing on what is all around us and the present moment. 
 Each week Mrs Hendry invites children to take part in a short mindfulness session. This could be a great short family activity to help reconnect, focus, calm and relax together.
Before you being this weeks session please make sure-
Your room is dimly lit.
You are comfortably lying flat on your back, we love to get a comfy cushion for our heads and even a cosy blanket. (Not all children will want to lie down, a comfortable position will do)
Press play on the voice recording, close your eyes and remember to breath slowly in and out…
This may support your child’s emotional health and well being during this period of change.

Try at Home Challenge. One Planet Picnic, a picnic that is good for you and good for the planet!

Can you have a Teddy Bears Picnic as part of Earth Day 2020 on  Wednesday 22nd April?   

   

 We are asking everyone to have a picnic in their living   room or in their own garden at home and to send us in some photos. It would be great if you could help your grown up to prepare the food too.  Things to think about:

  • You can choose what you eat for your picnic but can you also include one item that has been produced or grown in Scotland or some local and seasonal food too?
  • Can you reduce food packaging and waste or perhaps you can recycle any food packaging and wrappers to make something after your picnic?
  • Can you avoid single-use plastics such as drink cartons and bottles?
    It’s a great excuse to spend a bit of time discovering new foods or rediscovering old favorites.  Here are a few ideas to start:
  • use seasonal Scottish fruit
  • cheese sandwiches using Scottish bread and cheese
  • if you don’t have a teddy then any toy is welcome to come along!
