A ‘Thirst’ for Learning in Primary 4!

Volume (2) Volume (4) Volume (6)

This week, in Primary 4, we have continued upon our maths journey.  Having weighed items, measured the length of objects, we investigated volume.

We decided that volume is the amount of space that a 3D object, such as a bottle, can occupy.  Usually, when we think of volume, we think of water as the object which fills that space in the bottle.

Having agreed on our definition, we set out working in groups to find out the volume of various bottles and containers.  We were also introduced to terms such as litres (l), millilitres (ml) and centilitres (cl) and identified that:

  • 1000millilitres is the equivalent of 1litre;
  • there are 100 centilitres in 1litre.

When we looked back over our work, we found out that there are similarities between mass (weight) and volume (capacity) and we were able to deduce that:

  • 1 litre (volume) is the equivalent to 1kg (mass/weight)
  • 1000ml is the equivalent to 1000g

We also found out that our carpets hold a lot of water and we have the cleanest and freshest desks in West Lothian!
