Over the last few weeks, we have been investigating fractions.  In the beginning, we looked at a simple fraction such as ½ (one half).  We asked ourselves what exactly this was telling us.  We found out that,

This led us onto reviewing our ‘4 Big Questions’:  that Multiplication and Division are linked, that you can draw a diagram to show objects being shared and that fractions are used everyday as a way of sharing or dividing something into equal parts.  Next, we identified instances when we use fractions: half time in a football match, when telling the time – quarter past/to and half past, a pizza being cut into slices and, finally, sharing cubes of a whole chocolate bar.

As soon as chocolate was mentioned, we all went ‘MMMnnnnnn…Chocolate’.  We created our own team game called ‘Fraction Giveaway’ using Dairy Milk chocolate. To begin with, we decided upon how many pieces of chocolate we would play for. Then we asked a question, “2/3rd of 18 are……?”  The other team then had to use the chocolate cubes to work out the answer by sharing 18 chocolate cubes between three team members.  This meant we were able to find out what one third was and, from this, we were then able to work out what two thirds were.

If we got the answer correct, then the other team gave us some of their chocolate cubes.  If we didn’t answer correctly, then we had to give the other team some of our chocolate cubes.  At the end, the team with the most chocolate cubes were the winners.  We also got to ‘share’ the chocolate out with our team mates which was an added bonus…..plus they’re better tasting than plastic cubes!
