P3/4 are starting a new topic on minibeasts. We shared what we already knew about minibeasts. We then asked all the questions for things we would like to know and these are in our floorbook. During our learning we will go back to these questions and see which ones we have answered and look at ones we need to find out more.
We have been looking a creating tiling patterns in Maths, creating tiled floors in our homes as part of our topic and in Art, Mr Hendry was teaching us about how small tiles can be used to make beautiful pictures called Mosaics.
Mr Hendry showed us lots of examples of different mosaics from all over the world and from different times in history. We tried to create some Mosaic pictures of our own. It was quite tricky, but we persevered. Some of us are finished and some of us still have a bit more work to do, but we are really pleased with our results so far. Here are a few for you to look at- we were working on them today!
The triominoes were popular again at Smart Start this week. Alexander & Jaxon worked as a team to make a full hexagon using the triangles. They said it was quite a challenge but they enjoyed it. They plan to tackle it again and see if they can make a bigger shape!
As part of our “Homes” project, we have been looking a tiling patterns. Many of us have tiles in our homes in either bathrooms or kitchens and we talked about the patterns we see in these. We went on to make our own tiling patterns using Mrs Gibson’s large carpet tiles. We made lots of different patterns. Some were simple and others were much more complex. We enjoyed doing it and used our knowledge to then go on and create tiling patterns of our own, using a maximum of three colours on ready made tiling designs. We could make the designs our own by choosing the patterns we wanted to create. It was quite tricky and took a while but we all enjoyed it.
One of the criteria for the homes we will be building is that we need to have some section of our home floor tiled- this gave us time to practice some ideas!
Today we had a French competition to see which table could match up the French cards to the English cards. Do you know what these sentences mean:
1. Je suis écossaise.
2. J’ai des yeux bleu
In topic this week we looked at main leaders, such as Hitler. We had a true or false class quiz. We found some of the questions tricky.
In music we planned what we were going to do, what chords to use and how fast and slow we needed our beat.
In PE we are learning about net games, in particular badminton. We are going to play doubles next week with the new skills we have learned.
Our topic this term is Vikings. So far we have been discussing what we want to find out about Viking and have used the internet to research Viking long boats. This week we will be creating a fantastic Viking long boat display! Any Viking research done at home can be added to our class floor book too!
The Scotland Software Trainers, Bob and Marie, visited our class. They showed us how to make songs with Garageband on the Ipads. We have been asked to reconstruct a song from scratch and had to pick between Sam Smith’s ‘Stay With Me’ and Taylor Swift’s ‘Shake It Off’. We can’t wait to let you hear it once it is finished…although this will take us 10 weeks!!!!!
In Topic we have been learning about WW2. This week’s focus was on Hitler and his rise to power. We had to organise a timeline of events. This was quite easy as it had the dates but it was also very interesting.
In art we created imaginary flying insects for the Flower Show competition. They were all colourfully weird!
In science we tested the theory ‘People with longer arms have longer fingers’. We measured everybody in the class, our teachers and our cleaners and plotted our findings on a scatter graph. Our conclusions are different and we decided that we would need to include more people in our survey before we could decide.
