On Wednesday 15th February we went to Glasgow Gurdwara to learn more about the religion Sikhism.

Once we got there we had to remove our shoes, wash our hands and wear head scarfs as a sign of respect and cleanliness. We then had a tour of the Gurdwara.

We saw where Sikhs put the Guru Granth Sahib to bed. They do this as they believe that the Guru Granth Sahib is a living Guru and should be treated like one.

We also saw where Sikhs sit to worship. It is a large hall with an alter where the Guru Granith Sahib sits to be read from. It is written by the 10 gurus as well as Hindu and Muslim saints.

We listened to different instruments that are used in special ceromines and even tried wearing a turban.

Finally we tried some vegetarian food in the Langar hall. We tried spicy lentil curry and chapattis.

We really enjoyed going to be Gurdwara and learning more about Sikhs.

We’ve decided to learn about Buddhists next.

Yesterday P6/5 went to Glasgow to visit the Gurdwara.

A Gurdwara is the Sikh place of worship. We looked at the building and discussed how it was different to a church and a mosque.

When we went inside, we had to remove our shoes and wash our hands. This is a sign of respect and keeps the Gurdwara clean and tidy.

We also had to wear headscarves so that our hair was out of our faces. All Sikhs wear headscarves in the Gurdwara.

Once we were ready, we had a talk about the history of Sikhism from Manjit.  She told us what Sikhs believe about God and why they have the Khalsa. We learnt that there have been 10 Gurus during the history of Sikhism.

Then we went into the auditorium. This is where Sikhs come and pray and listen to the teachings from the Guru Granith Sahib. It was very quiet and peaceful.

Before we headed back to the bus, we were invited to the Langar hall to have try some pakora, curry and Indian tea.

We had a fantastic time at the Gurdwara. It was an experience that some of us will never forget.
