Polkemmet Park Outdoor Learning Day

We spent a brilliant day yesterday at Polkemmet Country Park learning about trees and building dens.

We walked from school to the park and split in to 2 groups- Primary 3 and Primary 4.  We spent one half of the day with a ranger who taught us about different kinds of trees, how they spread their seeds and the names of different types of trees we can find in Polkemmet Park.  We also looked at different types of animals that would live in the woods, where they  might live and the types of things they would eat.

We spent some time at the park during lunchtime- we were all starving after spending a busy morning out in the fresh air and we had lots of fun playing with our friends from Stoneyburn at the play park.

In the afternoon, we swapped over and we went den building with Mrs Gibson.  First we made forest cocktails using lots of different leaves, sticks and things we found on the forest floor.  After this, we spent time in teams building some amazing dens!  We had a really great time and were sorry to have to stop building our dens as we were having such a great time.  We hope that we can come back at another time to build dens again next term.

Introduction from the Junior road safety officers   Emma, Taylor, Angeline, Emma

Attending:

Mr George Paul  (Councillor)

Miss Shona Redmond (Parent Council)

Miss Alison Benson (Junior Road Safety co-ordinator)

Apologies:  Mrs Kathy Gibson (Headteacher)

The meeting was held in upper school wing as the children went through their power point for the Civic Centre which they will attend on Tuesday 12th April at 9-30am.

Mr Paul advised the children to wear high viz vests to the Civic Centre .

Mr Paul also invited the children and staff who were going to the Civic Centre to the café for juice and cake which he will kindly pay for.

We have to take two children from Baillie Avenue to represent the school.

The children were advised to say their names before they speak their part of the power point.

The children have to have their own paper work for each of their speeches.

Emma’s speech has now been added to the power point and she will rehearse it before we go.

The meeting went well and Mr Paul and Miss Redmond gave the children lots of feedback regarding their speaking .

Thank you

Miss Benson.

P2 visit to St Andrew’s Church, Harthill

We walked along to St Andrew’s Church in Harthill to learn more about the Easter Story from Mr Kennedy and Mr Topping. Mr Kennedy showed us the church books recording meetings, marriages and lots of other interesting information dating back over 100 years. Alasdair read a verse from the Bible about the Last Supper. We all had a chance to ring the bell with Mr Topping, Adam pulled on the rope and it lifted him off the ground!! We finished off a lovely visit exploring the church with a drink and a biscuit. Aiden said the visit was amazing. We would like to say a big thank you to Mr Kennedy and Mr Topping for all their hard work today. Thanks also to Mrs Woodhouse for supporting us on our visit.

P6/5 and P7 debate

Today, P7 came to teach us all about debating.

We found out that we have to use persuasive language to get our points across and different phrases when we are debating. We learnt that we have to be polite rather than argue with the opposition.

We had 2  different debates.

We debated that the school day should be longer. This was in the news yesterday so we found it a relevant topic to debate and talk about. The “agree” team found it difficult to think of reasons why but did a fantastic job to try and persuade Miss Cooke to agree with them.

Our second debate was that jobs are paid what they are worth. We had lots of different points and opinions and felt that this debate could have gone on for a while.

Miss Cooke and Miss Wickerson were very proud with how we debated.

We are going to get together next week to continue to work on our debating skills.

P6/5 visit Glasgow Gurdwara

Yesterday P6/5 went to Glasgow to visit the Gurdwara.

A Gurdwara is the Sikh place of worship. We looked at the building and discussed how it was different to a church and a mosque.

” The building is symmetrical” – James

” The Gurdwara has domes on the top to make it easy to recognise” – Adam

When we went inside, we had to remove our shoes and wash our hands. This is a sign of respect and keeps the Gurdwara clean and tidy.

We also had to wear headscarves so that our hair was out of our faces. All Sikhs wear headscarves in the Gurdwara.

Once we were ready, we had a talk about the history of Sikhism from Manjit.  She told us what Sikhs believe about God and why they have the Khalsa. We learnt that there have been 10 Gurus during the history of Sikhism.

” Guru means teacher and Sikh means learner” – Carla

” The khalsa is known as God’s army and have the 5ks as symbols to recognise them” – Jason

Then we went into the auditorium. This is where Sikhs come and pray and listen to the teachings from the Guru Granith Sahib. It was very quiet and peaceful.

” Sikhs put the Guru Granith Sahib to bed at night as it is respected like one of the family” – Scott

” The fan was really jewelled” – Morgan

Before we headed back to the bus, we were invited to the Langar hall to have try some pakora, curry and Indian tea.

” I really loved the pakora” – Emma D

” I tried the Indian tea, it was quite spicy” – Miss Cooke

We had a fantastic time at the Gurdwara. It was an experience that some of us will never forget.

Internet safety workshops

On Monday, Primary 5, 6 and 7 took part in an internet safety workshop.

We had a discussion about why we need to keep safe and what we can do to keep safe online. We found that most of us are safe when we use the internet.

We learnt what cyber bullying is. Cyber bullying is when people call you names, are mean and do things online that they shouldn’t. We talked about whether people online are our friends if we have never met them.

We worked together to produce a play which showed all the things about cyber bullying and being safe online. We performed this to the whole school.

We really enjoyed taking part in the workshops as we learnt a lot from it.
