Netball League

Can you tell by their faces that they did well! We are so proud of the boys and girls in the netball team. At the netball league today they came first! They got a medal each, a cup to keep for the year and a trophy to keep for the school. Josie has also been asked to join the Wildcats Netball team which is a huge achievement.

P3/4 Minibeast Adventures at Polkemmet.

P3/4 went on an adventure to Polkemmet Country Park. We were taking our learning about minibeasts to a new environment. We had a minibeast hunt to see what minibeasts we could find and compare this to what we were able to find at school. We used a pooter jar to suck up different minibeasts. We had to make sure we only sucked using the green tube! We found lots of minibeasts like worms, millipedes, centipedes, beetles, daddy long legs, flies and woodlice. It was quite a dull and cold day so there were not any bees, ladybirds or butterflies. We got to have our lunch at the playpark and have a play too. After lunch we went to make some art. We had to use materials we could find like leaves, twigs and flowers to make pictures of minibeasts. Miss Tuke was really impressed by our creativity! Before heading back to school we had to collect objects for our minibeast hotel. We are building this in a few weeks but the park was like the best shop for what a minibeast would need! We have lots of twigs, bark, pine cones and other materials.

Primary 1 Trip – Tesco Farm to Fork

Today we visited Tesco in Bathgate to learn about different foods and how they end up in our kitchens. We travelled on the bus to Bathgate then were met at Tesco by a lovely lady called Tracey. She took us up to the training room where we met Paul. We were given yellow bibs to wear and a hat with our names on them.

We then had to make sure we were quiet as we walked through the supermarket to the fruit and vegetable section with Paul.

Paul asked us lots of questions about fruit and veg – we learned that fruit have seeds and vegetables don’t, which means tomatoes and peppers are actually fruit! We had to split into teams and find a fruit or vegetable for each colour of the rainbow. We learned about some new fruit and vegetables, like aubergines.

We then got to try some fruit – some of which we had never had before. Max really liked the mango and Kayla liked the grapes!

After the fruit and veg section, we went to the fish section where we learned about some different kinds of fish that they sell in Tesco and even got to hold them! We saw mackerel, flatfish and squid.

We had a little break after the fish where we got a drink of water and a piece of fruit (healthy!). We then went with Tracey to the bakery. We learned about the ingredients needed to make bread (flour, yeast, water, sugar and salt) and saw the machines used to make bread and rolls.

We then added toppings to our own rolls – we could have tiger paste, sesame seeds, poppy seeds or cheese (or all of them together!).

We got to see the warehouse where all the food is kept before going onto the shelves – we even got to see in the back of a huge lorry! We then had to go into the fridge, which was really cold, and then the freezer which was even colder!

To finish the day, we got to taste lots of different cheese. We learned that cheese is made from milk, which turns into curds and whey before being squeezed together to make cheese.

We got to try cheddar cheese, smoked cheese and onion cheese. Payton loved the smoked cheese! We got to smell some blue cheese and only a few of us were brave enough to taste it – Callum was brave but didn’t like it!

We had a great day at Tesco and can’t wait to eat our rolls after school!
