Maths Problem Solving challenge day

We went along to Stoneyburn Primary School to take part in a Maths Problem solving challenge day.

We talked about different types of problems we can be given and the different strategies we might use to solve them.

We had lots of opportunities to work through different types of problems – logic, finding different possibilities, visual and rules and patterns.

Scott – I really enjoyed the logic problem all about Lego.

Jason – I really liked when I got to work out how many ways I could arrange number cards 1-15.

In the afternoon, we tackled 3 challenging questions. One was about how many jelly babies we would need to pull out of the bag to ensure we got one of each colour. The second question asked us to work out whether it was quicker to travel by horse and cart then a donkey or to walk the whole way.

The last question was the hardest and most challenging. We had to use our logic problem skills to work out the name and job of the son and Father.  We found it hard but we didn’t give up.

Can you solve the problem?

Messrs. Baker, Butcher, Farmer, Joiner and Plumber are all residents of the small village of Haar. They are the sons of a baker, a butcher, a farmer, a joiner and a plumber, who are all retired, and they themselves work as a baker, a butcher, a farmer, a joiner and a plumber. None of the five has a name which is that of his father’s occupation or of his own occupation; and none follows his father’s occupation. None has, as yet, a son of his own. Here are five clues to help you find out the occupation of each of the five villagers and the occupations of their fathers. 1. The retired plumber’s son is engaged to a girl in the neighbouring village of Smirr. 2. The village badminton team, which has four players, consists of Mr Baker, Mr Plumber, the retired butcher’s son and the joiner. 3. Mr Butcher and the retired baker’s son married sisters. 4. The village folk group, HearHaar, is made up of the retired farmer’s son on guitar, the plumber on fiddle and Mr Butcher on percussion. 5. The joiner is the only unmarried man in the list.

Our week so far in P7…

Today we had a French competition to see which table could match up the French cards to the English cards. Do you know what these sentences mean:

1. Je suis écossaise.

2. J’ai des yeux bleu

In topic this week we looked at main leaders, such as Hitler. We had a true or false class quiz. We found some of the questions tricky.

In music we planned what we were going to do, what chords to use and how fast and slow we needed our beat.

In PE we are learning about net games, in particular badminton. We are going to play doubles next week with the new skills we have learned.

This week in P7…

The Scotland Software Trainers, Bob and Marie, visited our class. They showed us how to make songs with Garageband on the Ipads. We have been asked to reconstruct a song from scratch and had to pick between Sam Smith’s ‘Stay With Me’ and Taylor Swift’s ‘Shake It Off’. We can’t wait to let you hear it once it is finished…although this will take us 10 weeks!!!!!

In Topic we have been learning about WW2. This week’s focus was on Hitler and his rise to power. We had to organise a timeline of events. This was quite easy as it had the dates but it was also very interesting.

In art we created imaginary flying insects for the Flower Show competition. They were all colourfully weird!

bugs

In science we tested the theory ‘People with longer arms have longer fingers’. We measured everybody in the class, our teachers and our cleaners and plotted our findings on a scatter graph. Our conclusions are different and we decided that we would need to include more people in our survey before we could decide.

Primary 7 had a fantastic week at school!

This week we have started our topic of World War 2. We began to learn about countries involved. We have also finished our collages for the Flower Show and are super excited about entering the competition. Mr Henry, our new art teacher, taught us how to shade in a negative space. Our new PE topic is net games and we have had a few badminton keepie-uppie challenges already.

We have had a great week but we are desperate for the weekend as we are super tired. Our teachers have worked us to the bone to the bone, but we can’t wait for next week! blog

Girls Football Team

The Greenrigg  Girls Football team played their first game tonight against Livingston Village. The sun was shining and the girls said they had great fun. They didn’t even mind that we got beat 5-0 never mind girls, you were great and full of team spirit. Thank you to Donna Sanderson for volunteering her time to come with me on the bus, the girls and I really appreciate your help and fantastic cheering us on! Thank you to the Livingston Village girls and their coach for the hospitality and refreshments, we will hopefully see you again.

Ellie McDougall was named woman of the match for her excellent work as first striker, then defender and then a fantastic goalkeeper – those were some impressive saves Ellie. Our Greenrigg Girls have no fear.

We are all proud of you
