Volcanoes with P5/6

As part of our natural disasters topic we have been learning about volcanoes.

A volcano is formed with 2 tectonic plates push together – Tyler.

An eruption happens when magma is pushed up through the main vent and comes out of the crater. It is then called lava – Matthew.

We have made 3D models of volcanoes using paper mache. We discussed the criteria we needed to follow.

We had to work as a team to ensure that we completed it. We used different techniques to create the volcano shape. We ripped pieces of newspaper into strips and soaked them in a watery glue.

We then needed to paint them.

Once they are dry we are going making our own volcanic eruption. Watch this space for how we get on.

P1 and the JRSO team

Today, the JRSO’s and JRSO Pupil Voice Group came to show us how to cross the road safely and speak to us about how important it is to wear bright colours when crossing the road, especially when it is dark.

We know to stand behind the kerb, look both ways, listen for any traffic, then cross if it is safe to. We know to cross in a straight line, walking (not running) and to keep looking both ways.

Challenge club – wind powered vehicles

Today we accepted the challenge to build a wind powered vehicle.

We could use any materials in the challenge club box and were allowed one pair of scissors and a metre of sellotape.

The winning vehicle would be the one that travelled the furthest by using wind.

We needed to think about different ways to join the materials together as we didn’t have a lot of tape as well as how the vehicle would move using wind.

We will continue to make our wind powered vehicles next week

Earthquake building challenge

Today we took part in a stem challenge to design and build a building that could survive an earthquake.

We were only allowed to use:

  • 20 pins
  • 70 paperclips
  • 2 metres of string
  • 30 straws
  • a cardboard base

Our buildings had to be at least a ruler tall.

We had 20 minutes to plan our design and talk about what we would like to do I n our teams of 3.

Once we had planned, we started building our earthquake proof buildings.

We worked really hard to make sure our buildings would survive.

“We had to think of a way to join it to the cardboard. We used pins to secure it” –  Bryoni

” We joined the straws together using paper clips ” – Jayden

Some of our buildings didn’t meet the criteria so we couldn’t see if they would survive an earthquake.

The winning building that survived the earthquake, which was Miss Cooke, was Rebecca, Jamie and Ryan.

West Lothian Foodbank collection

Over the last 3 weeks we have been collecting food for the West Lothian Foodbank.

We have collected food for people who are struggling to buy and get hold of food.

We had to bring food that can stay in your cupboard and don’t go out of date until next year.

The winning house was Baillee who collected the most food and won 500 house points. Kelly were second with 250 house points and Dardenelles with 125 house points.

We’re very proud of the amount of food we’ve collected especially as we’re not a big school.

Harvest Celebrations

Yesterday, we had our first school visit to the church! It was quite a far walk, but our P6/7 buddies helped us get there safely.

Walking to the church safely

Our buddies showed us how to sit smartly in a church – for some of us it was the first time we had ever been in a church!

We listened carefully to the P5/6 class assembly about harvest and stood up to join in with the songs. We then listened to the Minister talk about what harvest time is important.

We were very lucky to be given some juice and a biscuit at the end!
