This morning parents and carers were invited in to see what we have been doing in literacy. Mrs Gibson shared the school’s approaches to literacy with a short presentation in the hall. This looked at different ways we learn about literacy and how they can help their children at home. Parents and carers were then able to go and visit their child or children’s classrooms to take part and share in what they are doing for literacy, with reading as the main focus. This gave a little taster of the kinds of things we do and how they can continue this at home too. Please have a look at some of the photos. There was also a leaflet given out about ways to help your child with reading at home. There are extra copies outside the office.

P1 update!
What a busy few weeks back we have had after Christmas! We have been doing lots of learning about winter and have done lots of factual writing about what we see in winter as well as an imaginative piece of writing about a snowman that melted. We used drama to ‘build’ our own snowmen and read the story Sneezy the Snowman to help us think of ideas about how our snowmen would melt. We wrote our stories then used puffy paint (glue mixed with shaving foam!) to create our melted snowmen! We enjoyed combining drama, literacy and art for our stories.
We have also been helping keep the playground tidy by litter picking!

STEM Challenge Bins
Each class have a selection of 4 STEM bins. There are 8 different bins altogether. These bins are tubs that contain 1-2 materials such as lolly sticks or cubes. They also have some starter challenge cards like ‘can you build a maze’ and ‘can you create a bridge to cross a 10cm gap’. The children can then work on their own, in pairs or in small groups to use the materials to build, lay out and create something to solve their challenge. The feedback from the children is that they love these and enjoy making their own challenges. It is great to see how different children will tackle a problem in such different ways and really show off their ideas and creativity. Next time you have a few empty boxes or tubes at home, set your child a challenge to use them to make something to solve a problem. Â

Music in Action
Last Wednesday, P1 took part in a music workshop. We learned about how music can influence how we feel and how it is used in TV and movies, we learned about sound waves, and we told a story using music to help the audience understand what was happening. P2 and 3 were our audience. We had a great day!
Animal allergies
On Friday, P1 will be visited by a dog, rabbit and gecko. If your child has any allergies, please let me know as soon as possible.

P1 STEM – Making a rabbit enclosure
I was really lucky to be invited to join P1 in making their rabbit enclosures. I was so impressed by their team work to plan and make their enclosures. They had to be creative with the junk material they had. I heard Jacob telling his a team mate they had a great idea. This is great language to use. I also saw John who added cut up card to make hay for his hay rack. This was him thinking about how to improve the design. They shared them with the class and explained what they had in their rabbit home. They were able to explain what everything was and some even added extra information. Layla explained that the rabbit bowl was lower as the rabbit is small so it needs to be at the right height.
Well done P1!
Church Workshop ‘In My Father’s House’
Today, primary 1, 2 and 3 participated in workshops run by the church. We had great fun making glasses (P1) snow globes (P2), houses (P3) and bracelets. We then listened to Mary telling us some stories about finding God and Jesus and about Heaven. Pastor Ian told us about the Good News Club on Thursday evenings at 7pm at Greenrigg Mission as well as Sunday School (on Sundays!) at Bernhar Church in Eastfield.
