P5/6 information

A few notes for parents/carers:

Please ensure your child’s name is on all items of clothing – indoor, outdoor, PE kit, bags and shoes.

PE days are Wednesdays and Thursdays starting next week. On a Wednesday it would be helpful if your child came to school dressed ready for P.E as it is first thing. Also if your child could wear a polo shirt on these days rather than a shirt and tie. Please provide a PE kit suitable for indoors and outdoors, i.e. shorts, jogging bottoms (or similar) and a t-shirt. (You can also provide a zip up top and outdoor trainers if you feel necessary for outdoor PE lessons).

Please ensure your child wears a jacket (preferably with a hood) every day, regardless of the weather.

Water bottles should be provided with plain water for in class and after PE lessons – juice or flavoured water is only permitted for lunch and should be kept in your child’s bag or lunch box until lunchtime. Please ensure your child’s name is also on lunch boxes and water bottles.

If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to contact Miss Cooke, Mrs Millar (at the office) or a member of management (Mrs Gibson/Miss Tuke)

Street dance champion in P5/6

Last weekend, I went to the Street Dance world championships in Glasgow. I went with my team called Pressure and my Mum.

I had to perform a dance in front of all the other teams and some judges. I used hip hop and wacky dance moves. From our performance on Friday my team and I went straight through to the final on Sunday.

We performed the dance again and came 5th in the world.

Here I am with my medal.

We discussed why it was important to try and eat healthy foods.

We had different things we could put in it:

P6/5 have Judo

Yesterday we took part in a Judo session from Junior Judo.

We had to wear a Judo jacket and belt.

We practised some of the Judo moves. These were breakfall, throwing each other onto our backs and side turning and falling.

” I enjoyed all of the Judo session” – Jason

” My favourite part was when I managed to get Scott onto his back” – Sophie.

” My favourite part was doing the breakfalls with a partner” – Elise.

We all really enjoyed it and some of us are going to try and go to a club.

P6/5 term 3 highlights

We have had a very busy term since Christmas. We thought long and hard about our top 3 highlights

Our first highlight of term 3 is when we learnt all about Sikhism – what they believe, where they worship and how their life is different from ours. The highlight was when we visited the Gurdwara.

Our second highlight is when we learnt about fractions, decimals and percentages. We found this very tricky but persevered with them and we are finding them easier. We are continue to learn and use percentages next term.

Our final highlight is the Basketball and cross country cluster events. We worked very hard to build up our skills before we went and followed the rules and played fair. Euian came second overall in the boys cross country event and will represent the school later on in the year.

We’re looking forward to term 4.

P6/5 and P7 debate

Today, P7 came to teach us all about debating.

We found out that we have to use persuasive language to get our points across and different phrases when we are debating. We learnt that we have to be polite rather than argue with the opposition.

We had 2  different debates.

We debated that the school day should be longer. This was in the news yesterday so we found it a relevant topic to debate and talk about. The “agree” team found it difficult to think of reasons why but did a fantastic job to try and persuade Miss Cooke to agree with them.

Our second debate was that jobs are paid what they are worth. We had lots of different points and opinions and felt that this debate could have gone on for a while.

Miss Cooke and Miss Wickerson were very proud with how we debated.

We are going to get together next week to continue to work on our debating skills.

P6/5 visit Glasgow Gurdwara

Yesterday P6/5 went to Glasgow to visit the Gurdwara.

A Gurdwara is the Sikh place of worship. We looked at the building and discussed how it was different to a church and a mosque.

” The building is symmetrical” – James

” The Gurdwara has domes on the top to make it easy to recognise” – Adam

When we went inside, we had to remove our shoes and wash our hands. This is a sign of respect and keeps the Gurdwara clean and tidy.

We also had to wear headscarves so that our hair was out of our faces. All Sikhs wear headscarves in the Gurdwara.

Once we were ready, we had a talk about the history of Sikhism from Manjit.  She told us what Sikhs believe about God and why they have the Khalsa. We learnt that there have been 10 Gurus during the history of Sikhism.

” Guru means teacher and Sikh means learner” – Carla

” The khalsa is known as God’s army and have the 5ks as symbols to recognise them” – Jason

Then we went into the auditorium. This is where Sikhs come and pray and listen to the teachings from the Guru Granith Sahib. It was very quiet and peaceful.

” Sikhs put the Guru Granith Sahib to bed at night as it is respected like one of the family” – Scott

” The fan was really jewelled” – Morgan

Before we headed back to the bus, we were invited to the Langar hall to have try some pakora, curry and Indian tea.

” I really loved the pakora” – Emma D

” I tried the Indian tea, it was quite spicy” – Miss Cooke

We had a fantastic time at the Gurdwara. It was an experience that some of us will never forget.

Internet safety workshops

On Monday, Primary 5, 6 and 7 took part in an internet safety workshop.

We had a discussion about why we need to keep safe and what we can do to keep safe online. We found that most of us are safe when we use the internet.

We learnt what cyber bullying is. Cyber bullying is when people call you names, are mean and do things online that they shouldn’t. We talked about whether people online are our friends if we have never met them.

We worked together to produce a play which showed all the things about cyber bullying and being safe online. We performed this to the whole school.

We really enjoyed taking part in the workshops as we learnt a lot from it.

Basketball festival

On Thursday we went to the cluster Basketball festival at Whitburn community centre.

We formed 3 teams and we were called France 1, 2 and 3. We each got different coloured bibs. Each team played 5 games against other schools. Some of the schools were Stoneyburn Primary, Fall Hill, Polkemmet Primary and Whitdale.

Each game was 3 minutes and we had to try and score a basket.

We used different skills to help us play – defending, attacking, passing, communicating, dribbling and team work.

Even though we didn’t win we had fun and enjoyed it.
