Halloween in P1

Over the the past week, we have been learning about Halloween. We learned that Halloween is celebrated on 31st October every year and that when it began, people dressed up because they thought there were real ghosts and they were trying to scare them away! We learned that people used to carve turnips, but then started using pumpkins instead because they were much easier to cut into. We learned that carved pumpkins are called Jack-o-lanterns. We spoke about what we were going to dress up as for Halloween and had great fun at the school disco. We learned that trick-or-treating can also be called guising and we discussed how to stay safe when out guising. We made footprint ghosts, handprint spiders and Halloween cards and we all helped Mrs Hendrie carve some pumpkins. We then got to get messy with the insides of the pumpkins! We thought they felt “squishy” “slimy” and “yucky”!
