Monday 21st March

  • P2 visit to St Andrew’s Church

Tuesday 22nd March

  • All of P3 and P4 to Polkemmet Country Park for Outdoor Learning day led by Countryside Rangers and by Mrs Gibson.  Straight after registration we will walk along to Polkemmet where we will meet with the P3s and 4s from Stoneyburn.  The P3s will spend the day together and the P4s will meet up with the friends they made at the Ecology Centre two weeks ago.  The children should dress for the weather and for (probably) getting dirty.  Layers are best – no jeans though as they don’t do well if they get wet:)
  • P5/6 are off to Whitburn for a Cross Country Festival with Miss Cook
  • 3.15 – 4.15 ASC Netball

Wednesday 23rd March

  • We are delighted to welcome Mrs Bradley who will be in school all day
  • P7s will have an additional Futsal session (to make up for one that they missed)
  • Bailey House are this term’s winners – their reward is a Pink Unicorn Activity Party   All Bailey children are requested to wear something pink on Wednesday – this may be a scarf/piece of material that they can use as a bandana or wrist band:)
  • 3.15 – 4.15 ASC Football

Thursday 24th March

  • Whole school to church for Easter Service, 10am at the Church – everyone welcome. We will leave at 9.25am.  If you would like to walk up and down with us, please meet your child’s class at 9.25 just outside the front door.  

Friday 25th March – Sunday 10th April Easter Holiday

School reopens on Monday 11th April

P6/5 and P7 debate

Today, P7 came to teach us all about debating.

We found out that we have to use persuasive language to get our points across and different phrases when we are debating. We learnt that we have to be polite rather than argue with the opposition.

We had 2  different debates.

We debated that the school day should be longer. This was in the news yesterday so we found it a relevant topic to debate and talk about. The “agree” team found it difficult to think of reasons why but did a fantastic job to try and persuade Miss Cooke to agree with them.

Our second debate was that jobs are paid what they are worth. We had lots of different points and opinions and felt that this debate could have gone on for a while.

Miss Cooke and Miss Wickerson were very proud with how we debated.

We are going to get together next week to continue to work on our debating skills.

P6/5 visit Glasgow Gurdwara

Yesterday P6/5 went to Glasgow to visit the Gurdwara.

A Gurdwara is the Sikh place of worship. We looked at the building and discussed how it was different to a church and a mosque.

” The building is symmetrical” – James

” The Gurdwara has domes on the top to make it easy to recognise” – Adam

 

When we went inside, we had to remove our shoes and wash our hands. This is a sign of respect and keeps the Gurdwara clean and tidy.

We also had to wear headscarves so that our hair was out of our faces. All Sikhs wear headscarves in the Gurdwara.

Once we were ready, we had a talk about the history of Sikhism from Manjit.  She told us what Sikhs believe about God and why they have the Khalsa. We learnt that there have been 10 Gurus during the history of Sikhism.

” The khalsa is known as God’s army and have the 5ks as symbols to recognise them” – Jason

Then we went into the auditorium. This is where Sikhs come and pray and listen to the teachings from the Guru Granith Sahib. It was very quiet and peaceful.

Before we headed back to the bus, we were invited to the Langar hall to have try some pakora, curry and Indian tea.

We had a fantastic time at the Gurdwara. It was an experience that some of us will never forget.

Internet safety workshops

On Monday, Primary 5, 6 and 7 took part in an internet safety workshop.

We had a discussion about why we need to keep safe and what we can do to keep safe online. We found that most of us are safe when we use the internet.

We learnt what cyber bullying is. Cyber bullying is when people call you names, are mean and do things online that they shouldn’t. We talked about whether people online are our friends if we have never met them.

We worked together to produce a play which showed all the things about cyber bullying and being safe online. We performed this to the whole school.

We really enjoyed taking part in the workshops as we learnt a lot from it.

Stephane’s alien is called Emma and has only one eye. She is wearing a tartan ribbon.

Ava’s alien is made out of a milk carton and is called Lewis

Abigail’s alien is called Lucy, she is wearing a kilt.

Poppy-Grace’s alien is called Stary and is made out of a plastic bottle.

Natalie’s alien is called Marsha, she has a flag for Katie Morag.

Cate’s alien is called Chloe and is made out of card and paper.

 

Sam’s alien is called Banana Man, he is made out of milk shake cartons.

Alasdair’s alien is called Messi and is made out of a cereal box. He has pipe cleaner arms and legs with his feet made out of feathers.

John’s alien is called Johncena, the head is a balloon and the body made out of a bottle covered in newspaper. We are so good at recycling old things.

Louisa told us all about her alien who is called Daisy. She is made out of cartons, wool and pom poms.

Mosaics

We have been looking a creating tiling patterns in Maths, creating tiled floors in our homes as part of our topic and in Art, Mr Hendry was teaching us about how small tiles can be used to make beautiful pictures called Mosaics.

Mr Hendry showed us lots of examples of different mosaics from all over the world and from different times in history.  We tried to create some Mosaic pictures of our own.  It was quite tricky, but we persevered.  Some of us are finished and some of us still have a bit more work to do, but we are really pleased with our results so far.  Here are a few for you to look at- we were working on them today!
