A week of differnce

This week has been an interesting one with a few special treats thrown in. On Wednesday we went to Bathgate Xcite for our swimming assessment. We had to swim a length of back crawl and a length of front crawl. It was a lovely walk through the park and a nice change to our normal routine.
On Thursday we welcomed some parents and carers to watch our final NYCoS session. We played some of our favourite games and showcased our developing knowledge of rhythm, pulse and beat and we did some singing games. We hope that those of you who were able to come enjoyed it.
In numeracy we have been learning about division with Mrs Mackenzie. It is challenging for some and easier for others!.
We looked at data of who had siblings and organised it to help us answer questions about it.
In our reading rave we made books, read story books, wrote reports and played language games on the ipads. Most of the class are beginning to enjoy reading more. In maths we have been learning to sort data using Venn Diagrams
In science, we are learning about the different parts of plants. We examined the roots of different plants such as beetroot, pansies, hyacinths, tulips and dandelions. Although the roots are all different, they all keep the plant anchored in the soil and take in water and nutrients for the plant to grow.

What an exciting week! We had part of Mr. Cunningham’s class join us for the week as he went with the P7’s to Oban. We learned about topic, writing and grammar together and for maths continued with what we were already doing in our class.

This week, we have been very busy learning about the Human Skeleton. Humans have an endoskeleton because it is found in the body. We learned about the names of the different bones, their function, purpose and some facts. We also learned to keep our body strong and healthy, by drinking lots of milk, eating cheese and eating yoghurt because they contain calcium which makes our bones strong. We should also do lots of exercises to keep us fit.

In maths, we have been learning the 3 & 4 times table. In topic maths, we were learning to recognise money and add money. Mr Cunniinghams’ class was learning about telling the time.

In writing, we were writing a story about being shipwrecked. We were trying to use similes and adjectives. to make it more interesting.

Have a great weekend!

Our blog post didn’t work last week so we’ve got two weeks worth of highlights to share! In literacy, we have been focusing on persuasive writing. Last week Miss Carrera pretended that school was going to be open on Saturdays – we had a lot to say about this! We thought up reasons why school should not be open on Saturdays and we have been working on writing a persuasive essay. In Numeracy, we are continuing to learn about 3D shapes. We looked at lots of different 3D shapes and thought about the properties of each one. We can say how many faces, edges and vertices a 3D shape has. For our Holyrood topic, we have been looking at the different political parties in the Scottish Parliament. In groups, we used iPads to research a different political party. We then shared our findings with the class and talked about which party we thought was the best. The majority of the class thought that the Green Party sounded the best, because we think that the saving the environment is really important. Here are some of our other highlights:

Catriona – I really enjoyed P.E. this week.

Kiara – I really liked the persuasive writing.

Connor & Suvi – We are enjoying drawing mythical beasts and hybrids in Art.

Murray – I enjoyed making the 3D shapes.

Mia – Violin is really good as we are now getting to use our fingers to play.

Amy – I really liked doing problem solving with my learning partner.

Megan – I thought finding out about the different political parties was really interesting.

Enjoy the weekend 🙂

What a great week it has been in P2b.  We have been learning lots of exciting things!

Literacy

We have been writing another story this week all about a magic hat.  We have written the beginning and middle so far and can’t wait to finish it next week.  We are getting really good at planning too!

We enjoyed learning all about Onomatopoeia and we know that we use this to describe sounds or feelings.  For example, we would describe a horse galloping as ‘trip, trop’ or strong winds as ‘whoosh’.  We can’t wait to use this in our writing next week!

We are using the literacy box lots now and we are really enjoying it.

Maths and Numeracy

Some of our groups are getting really good at their 2 times tables and enjoy using the cubes to help them find ‘groups of’ numbers. Other groups have been working on their 5 times table and managed to build a house from working out tricky sums.

We have started learning about length in measure and we worked out if objects were bigger or smaller, shorter or longer than our pencil.  We also sorted ourselves into a line from the shortest person to the tallest person- have a look…

Learning Across the Curriculum

In our topic of Africa we were learning more about animals.  We learned about different parts of their bodies and managed to stick the correct words to the correct body part.

We also learned how to look after animals and we focused this on a pet dog and spoke about what we need before we get a dog and how to look after them once we have them.

Primary 2/1 Blog – Week Beginning 16.4.18

We have had an absolutely amazing week, full of lots of learning adventures!!

Here have been the best bits this week!

Literacy

  • Writing a story about a dinosaur that came for tea.  We had to think about what kind of dinosaur had arrives because that changed what we would give them to eat.  The P2s even explored using ellipsis, character speech and onomatopoeia!
  • Active spelling using the slime trays…it was a very messy job but we had lots of fun.
  • Sharing a whole class novel during milk and story time.  We are reading ‘The Dinosaur Detectives’ which is all about Matt who can see dinosaurs when he touches a fossilised egg.

Maths

  • Practising dividing and getting better at understanding the process.  We have explored using concrete materials and pictures to divide as well as challenging ourselves to use skip counting to work out how many groups a number divides into.
  • We played around the world this week…the spacemen won this time but Mrs Mansfield is trying to get some more aliens in her team next time!

Learning across the Curriculum

  • Getting to touch and learn about dinosaur poo.  We learned that people have found out about what the dinosaurs ate from looking at their poo (yuck!)  We were each given a dinosaur and had to look to see if our dinosaur was a carnivore, a herbivore or an omnivore. It was disgusting but lots of fun!
  • Our dinosaur lesson with Mrs Mansfield.  We explored moving like dinosaurs and also learned new dinosaur songs in music time.  It was lots of fun and we learned a lot.
  • In role play we added dinosaur characters.  This let us explore different situations with dinosaurs which was fun
  • At messy area we made dinosaur headbands.  This helped us practice our fine motor and design skills.
  • At imagination station there are the bones of dinosaurs and paper booklets.  We have got to pick what we are going to use the booklets for.  Some of us created a diary as though we were a dinosaur explorer, some of us created stories about what had happened to the dinosaurs and some of us created posters about our favourite dinosaur.

Next week is a wee bit different because Mrs Mansfield is away in Oban with the Primary 7s.  We are very lucky that Ms Davidson and Mrs Keene are going to be taking our class, there will be lots more learning adventures and Mrs Mansfield can’t wait to hear about all our new learning!

Welcome back, Everyone!

This term we have started off with revising our times’ tables and have begun to understand how multiplication links to division. We have also started learning about the different coins we have in our monetary system.

In topic, we have been learning about different habitats and how they affect the types of animals living there.

In French, we are learning to listen to and follow instructions by playing the French version of Simon Says. Our favourite phrase is go to the toilet!

We learned about similes and then made up our own similes to write a poem about our pet or favourite animal.

Enjoy your weekend!

1a’s Week

Bonjour!

We are enjoying saying the days of the week in French. Today is Jeudi.

In maths we are screening our addition sums. This is tricky but we are having a go and counting our red and yellow counters to help us find the total.

For outdoor PE we tried some parachute games but it was extremely blowy!

We watched a video called ‘Amazing Things Can Happen’ about Autism for Wear It Blue Day. We talked about how each of us is different and unique, then we each made a puzzle piece to show a bit about ourselves and how we are all different but part of our class team. Here is our work in progress.

Primary 2/1 – School Trip

Hi,

It has been drawn to my attention that there was a typing mistake on the letter issued from the office about our class trip.

This note is just to clarify that all children in P2/1 will be attending the trip to Botanic Gardens.

Can all permission letters please be returned along with the payment of £8, which covers bus costs and entry to the Botanics.

Please note that a packed lunch will be required on the day.

If you have any concerns, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Thanks,

Mrs Mansfield

This week has been very busy!

We finished our topic about the Ancient Egyptians and learned about the Egyptian seasons, their calendar and why it was based on the flooding of the River Nile, the hierarchy system and also who Moses was and what happened to him and his people. We learned how the events leading up to Easter Sunday and ‘Passover’ are linked to the events at this time in history. We made our own Palm leaves in remembrance of Palm Sunday.

In maths, we have continued looking at multiplication and are now beginning linking it to division. We learned more about the area of things as well.

This week we also had a special visit from a book author who told us about the book he had written, we had Dress down/dress up day and also our last session with Relax Kids.

Congratulations to Dionne for winning the Cheer Leading Competition!
