Getting ready to blast off…

This week in P6 we have been practising our assembly again and nearly ready to blast off into space!

On Thursday afternoon the children that had been the Musical Theatre and Dance  electives put on a show for P6 and P7 at the Regal Theatre.

“It was awesome” Luke

“It was really cool and fun and I liked watching all my friends” Rabeea

“It was really fun and nerve wracking, but we really developed our skills and I would do it again.” Christopher Allan

Some of the class have been looking after the nursery children that will join us in Balbardie after the summer!  The children were very excited about coming to P1!  Some were quite shy, some were quite loud and noisy!

We are really looking forward to the gala day tomorrow and wish Balbardie Primary School float  ‘good luck’!!!

Profile week in P7b

Profile Week has been a little bit different for us in P7 this week as we have been focusing on writing very important profiles of ourselves which will be passed up to our high school. These profiles will help our new teachers get to know us and how we prefer to learn. It will also give them an insight into our achievements and awards and what we feel are our next steps.

It has been very interesting reflecting on ourselves and our time at Balbardie and we’ve had to be very honest about everything. Here are some examples of the comments in our profiles…

Eve: “I think I’m a good team member but sometimes it depends who is in my group with me.”

Amber: “I prefer learning by interacting in activities because I sometimes get bored and forget what we are learning when we just talk about it.”

Rhona: “When I work in a team I try to help and I’d like to improve my skills even more so I can give my team-mates better ideas.”

Murray: “I prefer learning by seeing things because it helps it stick in my mind. I also work well in a group because when you work together you have more chance of getting the task done.”

Aisha: “I sometimes find mental maths hard and I prefer to see the sum. I know most of my times tables though.”

John: “I’m proud of getting into the school football team and my time at Balbardie has been fun and a laugh.”

Abbie Ma.: “Sometimes I work best on my own but other times with a partner or group. It depends what I am doing. I’m a little chatty at times but most of the time I focus on the task.”

Sian: “My time at Balbardie has been great and when I’ve needed help the teachers have always been there for me.”

Dylan: “I prefer learning by doing things and hearing things but sometimes I get distracted. I never give up trying to get better though.”

P3lm ‘Human’ Trees!

We have been studying trees in art.  We began by looking at the trees in the playground, focussing on the textures and patterns on bark, branches and leaves and then drew a picture of a tree from observation, using charcoal.

Next, we imagined a tree was part human with a face, arms and hands by drawing these around a photo our own heads.  We looked closely at the lines of branches on trees and how they grow from each other, becoming thinner and thinner.  Using our pencil in different ways to vary the line of the branches; thick and thin.

We are proud of our display, which you can see below.

P1b’s trip to the police station

On Tuesday morning P1b went a walk to the local police station.  PC Arnott walked us through Bathgate town centre.  Ben saw his mummy and Leia saw her dad!  PC Arnott asked us to look out for all the police cameras.  We spotted eight!  When we arrived at the police station, we had a chance to look at a police van and go inside one!  We had fun pretending we were locked up in the back.  Rachael thought the day was ‘awesome!’

Primary 2/1’s Visit to the Police Station

Yesterday after playtime we walked to the police station with PC Arnott. We learned about pelican crossing and zebra crossings and we learned how blind people cross the road safely. PC Arnott told us to look for CCTV cameras in the town centre.

We went into PC Arnott’s police van and we had lots of fun and were ver excited!

We looked at the TVs with the cameras. On the way we found 8 cameras.

Seaside Fun in Class 1

Miss Barrie, Mr Marsden and the boys in class 1 were feeling disappointed this morning as our trip to the beach was postponed due to the wet and windy weather.  After our hello song, we had a class discussion about the weather.  Miss Barrie explained that the bouncy castle at the beach would be all wet and the play park would be too slippery for us to play on.  The boys in class 1 agreed that we should go to the seaside when the weather is a bit nicer.

We decided that instead of feeling sad, we should have a fun day of beach themed activities!  We loved playing with the water toys.  We like testing to find out if an object floats or sinks.  We enjoyed filling the containers with water and pouring the water over the water mill.  “The water mill is like a fan!” said Jayden.   Joe had fun playing with the whales and the dolphins.  This week we will be learning more about life under the sea!

We enjoyed visiting the Rainbow Room and painting pictures of the seaside.  We used different painting techniques, including paint brushes, finger painting and printing rollers.  Jayden and Liam enjoyed using the printing roller to create a wavy sea, using blue and white paint.

We even got to plan our own silver circle timetables.  We each had to choose four activities and put them in the order that we wanted to do them.  Lewis, Cody and Liam all wanted to make masks of their favourite characters.  Joe wanted to choose the library so that he could read his favourite story book ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ and Jayden chose four of his favourite activities, which included the dark den.

At snack time we ate marmalade sandwiches, just like Paddington Bear!  Joe and Jayden really enjoyed their sandwiches.  “It is just like orange jam!” said Jayden.  Miss Barrie and Mr Marsden thought the boys in class 1 deserved an extra special treat at snack time.  We had a yummy scoop of vanilla ice cream with delicious strawberries!

P4a

As we have been learning about ‘Being Cool in School’, some of us have tried to use these skills in and around school to successfully resolve issues.

In maths we are learning about measurement as this ties in with finding out the length of our limbs and our lung capacity. We have measured and marked our bottles for our experiment to find out our lung capacity so next week we will complete the experiments.

In writing we are still working on comics and having great fun in the process.

Bowling has been great fun. we have improved so much in just two sessions! Some of us can get very close to the ‘jack’ although Mrs Ghafoor could not get anywhere near the ‘jack’!

Enjoy your weekend!

Class 3 visit the library

We have started a new community learning programme.  Each week we go to a different place in the community.  Mrs Stewart gives us all a target before we go and we have to try hard to achieve it.  We have ‘Out and About’ books where we write in our targets and stick in photos to prove we achieved them.  Then we write a comment about the outing and read Mrs Stewart’s comment.  If we go to the same place with our parents, they can write a comment too.

What we think about our target books:

Geordie –  I liked the bit where I colour stars to show how well I did.

Josh – I liked getting the book and I liked taking it out and about with me.

This week we went to Simpson Library in Bathgate.  We all had our own targets.

Geordie – My target was to check out a book by myself. I did this but I was a bit disappointed that I couldn’t get out a teenage comic.

Josh – I had to choose a library book by himself. I found a fictional  book about dragons which was great!

Then we had a library challenge.  We had to get into teams and find out important information about the library.  We had a challenge question paper and clipboard.  For some of the questions we had to look for clues in the library.  The signs and notices in the library helped us.  For other questions we had to ask the library assistants to help us.  They were very helpful indeed.

Geordie –  I did very well with the challenge  and wrote down lots of the answers.

Whilst we were there Nathan, Geordie and Josh each got their very own library card.

Nathan – Getting my own library card was a little bit cool. I might use it with mum.

Geordie – It is awesome!

We really enjoyed our visit to the library and can’t wait for our visit to the supermarket next week.

This week in P2pg

This week we thought about all the things we learned through Cool in School, which helps us with our friendships.  Some of the children comments included …

“You know how people are feeling by looking at their face and their body language.” Skye

“Respect other children.” Robyn

“Own up to your mistakes.” Jennie

“If you hit someone you should say sorry.” Callum

“If you take something that doesn’t belong to you, give it back.” Gary

“Care for your friends.” Lucy

Over the next few weeks we are going to look further into building good friendships with others.

We also learned about Eco Houses and all the things that help we can do in our homes to help care for our environment.  The children designed their Eco houses on paper and we hope we can make some of these from junk materials (recycled ones of course).

Of course this all tied in nicely with our Grounds awareness day and the raising of the Green Flag today.  What an exciting day!  The children loved the stalls, the story and the picnic – even the cold didn’t put us off.

Well done P2pg.

Another busy week in P6m

This week we had visit to the library! The librarian read us a Horrid Henry short story and some of us were able to choose a book that we will read for our class presentation.

This week was our last sports elective week. 🙁

Here are some of our thoughts on the sports elective.

I really enjoyed the Badminton and I won a badminton racquet – Fraser

We had a fun day and went on the big floats and kept capsizing them! Taylor

The swimming elective was really fun and one day we had to swim 25 lengths! I forgot my swimming costume one day so had to buy a new one (on my birthday)! Rabeea

Musical threatre was really inspiring and the amount of progress we’ve made in such a short time is amazing! Everybody has got lovely singing voices and are amazing dancers.  Christopher A

We have had lots of fun practising for our class assembly!  We hope you are going to be able to come and watch us perform on Friday 14th June.

Finally, we were all really proud of our school when the 4th Green Flag was raised at Grounds Awareness Day!

Teddy Bear Fun by P1g

We LOVED Ground Awareness Day! Here are some of our highlights:

Kai – I had fun buying toys at the stalls.

Grace – I enjoyed eating my ice cream, it was yummy!

Daniel – The best part was buying toys.

Alfie – I liked looking at the flower stall. I bought one and I am going to look after at home.

Finn – I like everything! I liked buying cars, eating ice cream, seeing my gran to buy a plant and the story at the teddy bears picnic!

Emily – I liked having teddy bear crisps at the teddy bears picnic.

Sophie B – I loved reading ‘Going on a Bear Hunt’ at the teddy bears picnic.

Have a lovely weekend!

Survival Of The Fittest!

At the beginning of our topic the naturalists from P5ms each discovered a new species. We have written fact files about these creatures and some of us have created animations about them. This week they were faced with the ultimate challenge as we found out if our species would survive in the natural selection process.

Natural selection is a theory of evolution where species adapt to cope with the environmental pressures they face. Only the species that adapt well to the changes go on to make babies and their species will survive.

We created three different mutations of our species. Some were furry while others were hairless. Some were stripy, some had long legs and long necks. We made them as different as possible because Charles Darwin taught us that ‘diversity was the key to survival.’  Then the fun began! Our species were hit by a number of environmental pressures. There was an ice age which caused a problem for our hairless mutations. Global warming badly affected our furry creatures. The creatures with long necks thrived when new, taller plants grew but the short ones suffered. Dangerous predators roamed the landscape and a meteor wiped out all species that only had one mutation left!

In the end only three species were left standing:

“I believe Hotdog survived because his stripes helped him hide from predators.”    Adam

“My Dolphinhorse’s fur kept it warm while its long legs stopped it from overheating.”   Lauren U

“Tosa’s long neck helped him reach the tall plants.”    Finlay

We had great fun as we learned about something as tricky as Natural Selection. It truly was the survival of the fittest!

From the Blog Post Box:

This week we had a great time at the Sky Sports Community Games. Well done, Fitness Crew,  for winning the team competition – we are very proud of you. We tried out lots of sports and many of us have been inspired to join a new club or practise a new sport at home.

The sport I would be interested in trying is…

…basketball because I scored a net and it was fun.      Declan

…handball because I was good at catching the ball.    Olivia

…streetdance because it looked really cool what the boys were doing.   Antonia

P4l Home Learning Challenge

Hello Everyone

Thank you to everyone who commented on our blog last week, it was great to hear about the things people are enjoying.

This week we are going to have a blog home learning challenge.  Below is a short sentence and your challenge is to extend it by adding a chunk on at the end. Use your skills from class, thinking about VCOP. You might use on a connective or add on a chunk using ‘who, when, where, before, after’, etc. So the sentence start is:

           The boy closed the curtains.

An example of adding something might be:  The boy closed the curtains before the fireworks started. Or you could improve it further by saying: The scared boy closed the curtains before the noisy fireworks started.

Please remember to keep it to one comment post per person but you could try out a couple of sentences in your post.

Other News

Another great bowling session this week.  We had our class photographer Lily there but unfortunately she chopped off most peoples heads so bowling photos still to follow.  Our 6 class i-pads were in action this week with people recording themselves reading aloud to help work on fluency and expression.  People had lots of fun listening to themselves and we have some very expressive class members.

Bye for now and happy blogging.

Our Learning by 3b

This week has been very interesting! The hexagons have been learning about dividing and linking it to fractions and times tables! It’s brilliant how maths all links! Our spelling has included the pattern ee and ea.

We have been discussing the most important event of the year in Bathgate: John Newland’s Day/ Bathgate Procession. We talked about who John Newland was, why we have characters like Walter and Marjory and why Bathgate does not have a Gala Day. We have been drawing the characters and writing the story of John Newland. Our aim is to explain this to everyone so they know!

Our writing about John Newland.

P5a go Sports Mad!

This week P5a have gone sports mad! In addition to our normal P.E. lessons we took part in the Sky Community Challenge…and won! Everyone got a medal for taking part and we all enjoyed participating in lots of different sporting activities.

Melissa’s highlight was meeting Chris Cook, a swimmer who won GOLD in the Commonwealth Games.

Laura’s highlight was playing hockey.

Jason’s highlight was playing rugby and he is looking forward to the rugby festival (Monday 10th of June).

Kieran S enjoyed playing basketball.

Here is a picture of a few of our boys taking part in the dancing workshop.

In maths this week every group got 100% correct answers when playing Education City games. We are all very proud of our scores and think that maths is FUN!

We learned more about the trial of William Wallace. We made comic strips of his trial and discovered a new app for the iPad. Here is an example of a comic strip made with this new app.

We are all hoping for sunshine this weekend 8)

Swimming to Glory!

Congratulations to our swimming team who won the Bathgate Procession Inter-schools Swimming Gala. You all swam fantastically well and did the school proud! The winning team members are Jennifer, Natalie, Sian, Maia, Abbie, Aidan, Adam, Andrew and Euan. Well done!

The Enormous Turnip

In Primary 2/1 this week we have read the story of the enormous turnip.  We loved the ending when the tiny, little mouse helped to pull out the enormous turnip.  We all agree that working together can be a great way to solve a problem!

Please add any comments about a time you worked together.

In class we made a wordbank of words that mean the same as enormous and also a wordbank for words that mean the same as little.

We painted pictures of gigantic whales, towers and ships and then we painted pictures of tiny butterflies and bugs.

P2lg end of topic reflections

This week we finished our Houses and Homes topic.  We did some reflective thinking about what we had learned and what we had enjoyed. Here are some of our responses:

“Houses in Spain have flat roofs.” Zoe

“I liked going on a walk to see the houses in Bathgate.” Amber

“I enjoyed painting houses.” Caitlin

“I didn’t know what a wasp’s home was called before.” Harvey.

“A squirrel lives in a drey.” Dasha

“I enjoyed learning about houses around the world.”  Sophie

We are going to finish this term by reading about a special person who lives in a special kind of house, more about that next week!

We are looking forward to the Teddy Bear’s Picnic on Friday. Remember to bring along your teddy for some stories, songs and snacks in the garden at 10.05am.
