(A note from Mrs Mansfield – a couple of parents have asked me about homework this week.  Inside the homework pack there is a grid explaining which sounds we have covered.  Please ensure your child can identify and say these sounds.  The jotter is just in case your child wants to practise writing these – which would be really beneficial.  If you have any other questions, please ask)

P7B

We have been busy busy busy this week!  We have been learning to use a variety of tools in our writing and assessing our stories against our success criteria.  We used a variety of openers, connectives, alliteration and onomatopoeia. then we had to colour code our work to check if we had used everything.  Hard work but we learned lots about amazing story writing.

We also presented our powerpoints on inspiring people, it was great to share everyone’s thoughts and learn just how many of our families inspire us everyday.

P6A

P6A have had a short, fun filled week of learning.  Here are some of our highlights…

In Maths we have been continuing with fractions, learning about equivalent fractions, simplifying fractions, finding a fraction of an amount and converting percentages to fractions.

Liam- I found simplifying fractions quite challenging but I really enjoyed it.

Teighan- I enjoyed learning about equivalent fractions.

Connor- I found converting percentages into fractions quite challenging but I really enjoyed it.

Mia- I enjoyed converting percentages to fractions and finding a percentage of an amount.

In Literacy we finished our newspaper reports on The Tribes of the Rainforest.  They are all looking great and we can’t wait to get some of these up on display! We have learned that newspapers need a heading that is short, too the point and something that will grab a readers attention.  We also know that these reports have to include a mixture of information in text and picture form.

We have also been continuing with our class novel ‘Kid Normal’ and this week we have been revising character descriptions.  We showed our understanding of the main character ‘Murph’ by using a range of adjectives  and drawings to describe him.

Suvi- I enjoyed doing my character description.

We have been learning our days of the week in French and we have been working really hard on this.

Sophia, Ranna, Jason and Teighan- I enjoyed learning the days of the week, especially Sunday because I like saying “dimanche”.

Megan, Skye, Miles, Sophia, Ranna, Murray and Liam all enjoyed making posters for our European Day on the 26th September.

P6b

It’s been a fun and interactive short week on our return to school in P6b!

This week, in our maths, we have been looking at decimals. We have used our prior knowledge of place value to help with this and have enjoyed using place value charts to help us locate, plot and identify place value digits. We have looked at values up to the thousandths. It was really interesting to note that this means something is one thousand times smaller than a one which we found out upon realising that moving up a place value means something is 10x bigger and, conversely, moving down one means something is 10x smaller.

In our writing we finished our newspaper reports after responding to our marking, this involved lots of dictionary work to help us with our spelling. The newspaper reports have been written out good and they look absolutely fantastic! The newspaper reports contain a: newspaper name, price, date, heading, picture, caption, paragraphs, columns and a reporter.

We have also been continuing with our reading in class. The children really enjoyed having some quiet time to sit and enjoy the books we are each reading. In addition, we brought the school library to our classroom this week with the welcome addition of a few extra books from downstairs so that we can all read for pleasure. We have all been gripped by our continuing class novel, Roald Dahl’s ‘Danny, the Champion of the World’, as we near the thrilling conclusion.

Lastly, we have been continuing with our French work and have now moved into the numbers 20-50. The children are really enjoying the songs and games which we use to help make our French learning lots of fun!

Next week we will be continuing to look at decimals in maths and we will move into learning about the tribal peoples of the rainforest as part of our topic and literacy work.

Have a lovely weekend!

Maths Week in P1a

So the biscuits were yummy!

We continued the week exploring shape with the help of the Mr Men.  We have been exploring the properties of 2d shapes and went on a shape hunt around school to see real life examples.  We were even spotting shapes in the books that the maths’ fairy kept sending us, through the week we learned about money and days of the week.

This is what we thought:

I enjoyed making squares and rectangles on the peg boards – Libby

I loved having the MR Men help us – Hannah

I made Mr Strong, he is a square.  He has 4 sides. – Laycee

I made a triangular biscuit – Mia

I had fun spotting shapes in our classroom – Isla

We got a square book – Jacob (It was about money)

We saw lots of rectangles – Dylan

Mr Rush is a triangle – Rory

We read the Hungry Caterpillar, it was about days too – Kayden

Well done to Libby who won the Maths certificate this week and to Iris who won the School’s Values certificate, and is getting to have hot chocolate with Mrs Johns 🙂

Lastly, thank you for everyone who made meet the teacher this week….if you have any other questions please just ask at the end of the day.

Potatoes!

At the end of last year, P3B (now P4), rescued the potatoes from sports day from going to the bin. Instead, we planted them in bottles in class and watched them grow. We all took our plants home to look after and grow in our gardens during the holidays. (The bottles were too small to grow plants). The challenge was to see who could grow the most potatoes. Lilyrose won the challenge of growing the most potatoes. The attached video shows the plant that I took home and how the potatoes grew from one potato. I only got 4 tiny potatoes but that’s because I planted them out at the beginning of August.

Hi!
Potatoes

P3B

What a busy and exciting week!

In Literacy, we have been learning about the different aspects of VCOP and working with partners. We have been writing sentences – some silly! and writing instructions for what to do if a fire alarm goes off.

This week was maths week. We took part in a competition, played lots of games to help with our learning and built 2D shapes from match-sticks.

In topic, we have been learning about our responsibilities and how to help our community. We went litter picking around the school and collected a large bag of rubbish from each of the playgrounds. The P1- P4 playground was the dirtiest and messiest. Unfortunately, the rubbish was thrown out before we could take a picture to show how much litter there actually was.

In science, we have continued to look at properties of different materials. We measured the strength of a variety of materials. We learned that strength is measured in Newtons.

A big thank you to all the parents who came along to ‘Meet the Teacher’. It was a pleasure meeting you!

P6b

It’s been a week of fun and challenge in P6b for Maths Week!

We’ve been looking at fractions in our mathematics learning with a particular focus on being able to find equivalence and simplification. In addition to this, we’ve been working on finding fractions of a quantity with a numerator greater than one.

Towards the end of the week, Mark from the bank came in to help the children with an exciting money-based learning activity. The children were divided into groups of four and were tasked with preparing, planning and financing a birthday party before presenting their unique and original ideas to the rest of the class. We thoroughly enjoyed this activity and Mark was really impressed with the questions the children posed to him, demonstrating a clear interest and enjoyment in the subject at hand.

In our literacy, this week, we have been continuing our learning with the rainforest. We finished our plans for our newspapers and are now in the process of writing out drafts and/or responding to marking. The newspapers are really taking shape, looking really impressive, and we hope to be writing them out good next week.

Over the course of the week, in P6b, we have been continuing our French learning. We are continuing to look at: the days of the week, the months of the year, colours and numbers. The children are really enjoying the songs and games we have been looking at within language lessons.

Before I sign off this week’s blog, I just want to say a massive thank you to all of the parents and carers who were able to make it to our ‘Meet the Teacher’ event on Thursday evening. It was a pleasure meeting you all and hearing all of the lovely learning that your children are sharing with you at home!

Everyone in P6b has been working hard and taking pleasure from their learning; please enjoy the well deserved break during the long weekend. See you all on Wednesday 19th!
