Hello from P1b

This week in topic, we explored what dinosaurs ate.  We learned that most dinosaurs ate leaves and plants.  These dinosaurs are called herbivores.  Some dinosaurs ate meat. They are called carnivores.  We sorted pictures of carnivores and herbivores. During this, we learned that brachiosaurus, stegosaurus and triceratops were plant eaters and T-Rex’s and velociraptors were meat eaters.   Next week we will look at a dinosaur food chain.

Yesterday we went to the local library.  When we arrived, the librarian read us a dinosaur story.  We also got to choose our own library books to take home.  We will visit the library again in two week’s time.

Class 3’s busy week

This has been a different and busy week in class 3!

Cary tells us about a special afternoon class 3 and class 2 children had. He says “This week we had a special silver circle. Everyone in class 3 worked with someone from class 2. On our silver circle we had 4 jobs to do.  These were

  1. Wii
  2. Game
  3. iPad
  4. “What makes a good friend” activity.

We were learning about friendship and sharing.”

Callum says that he really enjoyed spending some time with his old classmates. He got on really well with Aiden and likes him as a friend. He particularly liked the game that they played. Its called ‘Avalanche’. He didnt win, but thats okay. 🙂

Callum also says “Next week in school I am looking forward to going to see Josh and Geordie in the Wizard of Oz!”

Liam tells us about his writing- I finished my writing and gave it the title “Necklace and the Bird.” It’s a funny story about a bird who steals the necklace and there are lots of chances for the man to get it back.

We had some special visitors into our class this week!

Geordie tells us some more about these visitors. “Mrs Gahfoor came to show us clothes that people wear in India and Suadia Arabia.  She also showed us Hena tattoos.  The Hena tattoos were really cool and awesome.”

Josh says that he would like to wear the clothes.  “Mrs Gahfoor, could you bring them to our class so we can try them on too?”

Callum told the other boys in the class that he saw a girl in the playground with Hena and remembers that it is a type of paste. (Not toothpaste though!)

Both Josh and Geordie have been working really hard on this year’s production of The Wizard of Oz! This will be performed at the Academy next week. The boys tell us how they are feeling about it.

Geordie- “I’m excited about the show.  My teacher from Westfield is coming to see me.”

Josh- “I’m feeling a wee bit nervous about the show.”

All of the adults are looking forward to seeing the show and think both boys have worked extremely hard!

Information overload!

This week we were learning how to create information posters by researching facts on a specific topic on Ancient Egypt and displaying this as a poster.

Rowan – On my poster I researched the after life. I found out that the Egyptians thought the after life would be better than their life before they died. They would bring statues and amulets with them for the after life.

Liam – On my poster I researched Tutankhamun’s tomb. I found out that robbers tried to steal things but they didn’t find the good stuff – like the jewels and his sarcophagus!

Ty – On my poster I drew pictures of some Gods such as Osiris, Bes, Ma’at, Ammut and Anubis.

Harvey – We learned about the weighing of the heart ceremony. If your heart was heavy Ammut would appear and eat you up!

Megan – If your heart was heavier than the feather that meant that you lead a life of sin.

Pupil of the week – Jay M

Table of the week – Giggly Gang

This week we had great fun with problem solving and team work. With a partner we had to tie a shoe lace. It sounds easy but the tricky part was we had to it with one hand behind our back! Some people found it really hard. We all got there in the end.

Ray J – The lace tying was fun but it was also really hard. I kept wanting to use both hands.

Chloe L – It was really hard at the beginning but we worked out what to do by giving each other instruction about how to make the first bunny ear then the second. We got it tied in the end!

Jamie N – It was hard working the lace with my fingers and not using my other hand.

In our maths this week we have begun to build on our existing knowledge of money. Some of us are working with concrete materials making, for example, 20p as many ways as we can. Others are being introduced to the decimal point and how to represent, for example, 36p as a decimal.

Kerry M – I liked using the money to make 10p. I made it three different ways.

Anais P – I liked learning about the decimal point. Now I can write any amount of pence up to 99p as a decimal.

Our writing this week has been a challenge as we try to apply what we have been learning about stretching our sentences. This week we have been encouraged to try this without prompting. Jay M was particularly successful with this task when writing about a day in the life of a chimney boy in the Victorian times. His writing was so good he received a round of applause from the class after he read it out!

Sasha B – Writing was really fun this week because I got to use my imagination and pretend to be a chimney boy. I remembered about using the sentence stretcher ideas to make my story more interesting.

In music this week we have been listening to Vivaldi’s four seasons. We had to listen to the first five minutes and using what we already know about classical music try to determine which season the music represented. Then, while listening to the music, we drew a picture to represent the season.

Sam D – It was fun listening to the four seasons music and drawing a picture of springtime. The music made me think of sunshine, flowers growing, green fields and kids going out to play with their dogs.

….and with that another great week in p5d comes to an end. Have a great weekend!

Cushion Clubs

The Cushion Club pupils have been practising listening carefully and following instruction they have heard.  Every week on a Thursday they do a listening exercise.  This week P2 had to listen to artists describing their paintings and then choose the correct painting.  It involved knowing the names of shapes like, triangle, rectangle, circle and square. P1 listened to animal sounds and had to choose the correct picture and say the sentence to match the sounds made. Both activities were fun.

Something I have enjoyed this week…

Here are some things we have enjoyed so far this week…..

Aaron, Craig and Travis enjoyed having an extra PE lesson on Wednesday!

In PE this week Sophie enjoyed learning about strength and play Bulldogs and Beetles.

Taylor, Josh, Robbie  and  Lily enjoyed making Easter eggs with Miss Henderson.

Cameron enjoyed the Big Start weighing challenge!

P5m have been presenting their class talks on Victorian inventions.

Erin Hardwick, Ava and Adam class talk was  on the telephone! How did people ever survive without telephones!!

Eva’s class talk was on the X-Ray!

Charlie’s class talk was on Coca Cola! Nadia learned from Charlie’s talk that Coca Cola was used to make cough medicine taste nicer!

Lisa’s class talk was on the type writer!

Erin Madden’s class talk was on the camera! Say cheese!

Ross and Mirren really enjoyed listening to all the class talks!

Scott’s class talk was on the car!

Aaron’s class talk was on the train!

Well done to all those who gave their class talks and good luck to those who still have to present.

Talking in P3/2

In P3/2 we have been focussing on using our talking and listening skills this term. We have been using our talking ted to share our news every week, we have been using the mystery box to ask questions about the mystery item, we have been talking about what we see, think and feel when looking at certain scenes and we have been using our “talk talk” area to discuss and ask questions about different pictures from different periods in history. This is all part of our aim to increase our language skills which will link to our creative writing skills. This week we instroduced “Mrs Mitchell’s Big book of tales”. The children all had great fun using this book to make up stories about different objects. The aim was to make their stories as creative and interesting as possible using the story structure, joining words and wow words.  Everyone had great fun listening to and making these stories up – our classroom was filled with laughter! Why not try this at home?

Sports Relief Bake Sale

On the 21st March 2014 we will be having a Bake Sale to raise money to send to Sports Relief.  The school will complete the mile on Thursday 20th March at the Bathgate Sports Centre track (9.30am for P4-7 & 11.00am for P1-3) which all parents are invited to come along and watch.  Cakes will cost between 20p and £1.50 and classes will have a rota for coming along.  We hope that you will support our Bake Sale.

Class 3 make new friends :)

On Tuesday afternoon we went out and about to the pet shop.

Callum – I got to hold the rabbit!

Josh – I held some animals, it was nice. I held the snake, a turtle and a bearded dragon. The bearded dragon felt soft not spiky.

Geordie – I held the bearded dragon too. I really liked it. It had spikes on its face. It was a bit like a child because it was crawling over me!

Cary – I loved the visit to the pet shop. It was a nice experience for two reasons.

1) I got to see other pets and

2) I got to see peeled snake skin! It was on the ceiling. Snakes shed their skin eventually and it comes off by itself. They just wriggle out of it!  I would like to go back next month to see the bearded dragon eat some food.

Thursday 6th March was World Book Day. In class 3 we listened to a story from a book called Revolting Rhymes. The author Roald Dahl wrote his own version of Cinderella which we decided was much more gory and exciting than the original!

Cary – The Cinderella poem was really good.

Geordie – It was awesome!

Josh – I thought it was a bit weird.

Callum – It was very funny :).

Liam –  Cinderella danced at the ball.

We looked at the vocabulary  that Roald Dahl used instead of said. He included words like yelled, muttered, bellowed, roared and replied.

We all agreed on the part of the poem that we liked best :).  This is it. We hope you’re not too squeamish!

Now came the Ugly Sisters’ go.

One tried it on. The Prince screamed, “No!”

But she screamed, “Yes! It fits! Whoopee!

So now you’ve got to marry me!”

The Prince went white from ear to ear.

He muttered, “Let me out of here.”

“Oh no you don’t! You made a vow!

There’s no way you can back out now!”

“Off with her head!” the Prince roared back.

They chopped it off with one big whack.

We are looking forward to reading another Revolting Rhyme next week!

P5m trip to New Lanark

Firstly, thank you to all who came to our Victorian Afternoon Tea – Morning! The children had a great time sharing their learning and eating scones! They performed the Victorian Work song brilliantly. Well done everyone in P5m!

This week P5m visited New Lanark to learn even more about the Victorian Period. Everyone had a great time and thought it was lots of fun!

The Annie McLeod ride was definitely the favourite activity and the scariest!!
The ride was about a girl named Annie. It told you about her life and she was born in Lanark. – Scott

The last part of the ride when it stopped was freaky! – Josh

Here are some things that the children learned at New Lanark:

I learned that there was a girl named Annie McLeod who was 10 and worked in the cotton mills. – Emma C

I enjoyed learning about Annie McLeod on the ride. After she said, “Do you believe in ghosts?” our ride stopped!! – Abby

The Victorian Classroom was so cool – we got to put on tunics. – Ava

I learned the whole of New Lanark was powered by water (the River Clyde). – Cameron

I learned cotton was made in the mill. – Travis

I learned that the River Clyde water wheel was powered by hand. – Drew

I learned that Robert Owen married David Dale’s daughter. – Nadia

Eve enjoyed seeing the cotton mill twisting the cotton.

Charlie learned that all energy was created from water and that Annie McLeod was born in New Lanark and that a lot of poor and working children had to work in factories.

We have also been learning about Florence Nightingale and read her story.

Apologies I haven’t been able to upload the photographs from the open morning. They’ll be posted soon.

Have a great weekend!

Another busy and exciting week!

This week on our trip around the world we were in Saudi Arabia. We researched lots of facts about Saudi Arabia, we learnt about the different customs and culture of the Arabs. Arabs wear different clothes from us, their clothes are loose and long and we found that this was so that they don’t get hot and sweaty as Saudi Arabia is a desert and so it gets very hot. We got the chance to dress up in these clothes. We also looked at a special building for Muslims – this was a mosque in Makkah, near Jeddah. It had a black cube decorated with gold embroidery and a gold spout, in the middle of it. All Muslims face in this direction for their prayers wherever they are in the world. We used a net for a cube to build our own representation of the Kaaba and coloured in a geometric pattern to make the doorway covering for the Kaaba. Here they write from the right to the left and Mrs. Ghafoor showed us how to write our names in Arabic. It was tricky but we all did a super job!

We were given cut pieces of a picture and had to redraw this onto a larger piece of paper, using exactly what we could see, we then coloured it in. When Mrs. Ghafoor put all the pieces together we had created a mosaic picture of PC Arnott. This was very tricky as we didn’t really know what part of the picture we were recreating! It looked fab.

On Thursday we went to watch the performance of The Wizard of Oz by the Primary 6’s followed by more music with Miss Doolan. Just before lunch we went to WHS Smith to choose a book with our book token. They very kindly let us choose another book or small item for free as well. All in all an exciting week.

Enjoy your weekend.

Assembly week for P7b!

On Friday we performed our class assembly. The theme was TEAM: Together Everyone Achieves More!

Taylor – I think our assembly was amazing and we all worked really hard on it.

Sam – I enjoyed our assembly and us all working together as a team to create a really epic assembly.

Christopher A – All our hard work we put in paid off as it all came out so well.

Rabeea – This week I enjoyed doing the testing. I mostly enjoyed the maths one because it moved from easy to hard level and it was testing to see how difficult I could go.

Fraser – I enjoyed P.E. with Mr Jeffries because I liked working with my team during badminton to see how many points we could win.

Callum – I enjoyed reading this week’s Literature Circle reading because it was really exciting to find out what happened next in Lord Loss.

Sam – I really enjoyed Literature Circles too. It was week 4 and my role was Discussion Duck and the book is starting to get so exciting that I ended up reading to the end!

Tom – The testing was a little bit boring and also quite difficult because it was asking us some questions we didn’t know the answer to.

 Who has impressed?

Rebecca – Jane impressed me by getting MVP from Mr Jeffries for PE this month.

Rabeea – Jane has impressed me by learning her lines for Captain Scotland and putting lots of expression into her performance.

Abbie – I’m impressed by Taylor because she stepped in at the last minute and learned somebody else’s part as well as her own.

Josh – I’m impressed by everybody in the class and Mr Berginis because we all put such a marvellous assembly on.

Taylor – I’m impressed with the class for putting on an amazing performance and how we worked together as a team. Also Abbie because she learned her lines so quickly.

Jane – I’m impressed with Louise because she really got into the character of Jenny Long Legs and was able to act in an annoying way!

Fraser – I’m proud of Rabeea, Alistair, Jessica and Ewan for doing so well representing the school in the Rotary Quiz.

Mr Berginis – I’m very proud of all of the class for how hard they worked as a team and how well they performed their assembly (including all my rubbish jokes!)

P2e

This week we have been working very hard in language. In our reading we have been using the book Zog. We were discussing the meaning of different words. We were looking for words in the text that we could change and thinking of words that mean the same thing. For example: “What a great idea” said Zog – We had ideas to change ‘great’ to super, wonderful, fantastic, fabulous and many more! Also, we have been learning about verbs this week and listened to the verb rap. We now know that a verb is an ‘action word’. In our writing we were finishing our dragon stories. We are getting very good at writing stories with a beginning, middle and end.

In our castles topic we have been learning about the people who lived in castles and the types of jobs they had. We know that there were servants, cooks and knights in a castle. Also there is a gong farmer and nonbody would like to have his job. He cleaned out the toilets!

We also know that a knight needs to a crest to let other people know who he is. We found out what different colours and symbols mean on the crests and designed our own.

We have been working hard on our class weekly targets over the last 4 weeks and today we received our class prize. We got two greens and two ambers on our targets overall so we got to have 15 minutes extra golden time today! Next time we hope to get all greens and get the bigger prize!

We are still practising our Skellybones and are looking forward ot the performance. Remember to return your slips. Also, the letters for our trip to Stirling Castle went out this week and we are all excited about learning more about castle life during an interactive handling session. Please remember to return the slips as soon as possible.

Awards:

Class Dojo and Table of the Week  – We will find out on Monday.

MVP – Evie

Drama – Holly

Poster Competiton – Mya

Well done to everyone who entered the competition.

See you next week.

P2g

This week we thought we would share with you our thoughts on what we have been learning:

Annabelle – I love learning about Castles.

James – I like learning about groups of things in Maths.

Finn – My mum helped me make my Tin Man costume, it was good.

Charlie – I am great at writing sentences.

We loved drawing our Wizard of  Oz pictures for the Float Competition.  It was great fun and we listened to the Wizard of Oz music while we drew. We were not impressed by Mrs Haddifon’s impression of the Cowardly Lion though…….

We are getting very excited about Mr Skellybones and can’t wait to show it to you all.  Some of us have still to return our ticket slips though.

We also took home our trip letters and are looking forward to touring Stirling Castle and dressing up in their costumes as we love drssing up in our class!

A Testing Week in 7M

This week 7M have completed 5 of the CEM tests. The pupils felt that the tests “made them think!” They completed an Attitudes Quiz, a Developed Ability Quiz, a General Maths and Arithmetic Quiz, a Reading and Spelling Quiz.

This week we learned what is needed to write persuasively and we used this knowledge and our learning of World War II evacuations to write a persuasive letter. We went in role as an evacuee and wrote a persuasive letter to our mum to allow us to come home. Some of the letters were so persuasive they brought a tear to Miss Macintyre’s eye!

Our homework task this week was to ask parents and grandparents if they knew of a family member who was living during World War II and had any interesting stories to tell. We learned that everyone had an interesting story to share from Prisoners of War, soldiers who fought bravely and received medals, soldiers who sadly died, soldiers who helped those in Concentration Camps, and woman who worked in factories. We loved looking at the letters, photographs, newspaper clippings and medals that were brought in. A thank you to the parents/ grandparents who shared WWII family stories.

In PE with Mr Jeffries the children have been learning what skills are required to play Badminton.

We also enjoyed 7b’s assembly which reminded us of the importance of working in a team.

Class 2

Liam – On Tuesday we went to Lana’s cafe. I liked the Airforce hand-dryer. It is black with black and red writing. I had juice in a pink bottle at the cafe. I had a pink cake with sweeties on it but I didn’t like it. Airforce is fast and noisy. I was sitting with Miss.Waddell and Mrs. Clark at the cafe. I like hand-dryers.

Aiden – This week at PE we went outside with Mr.Jeffries, Mrs. Clark and Miss. Waddell. We played Buildy Tig, Bathroom Tig and Mind Reader. Mind Reader is a game when you need to think about something like Minecraft, cars or fruits. Then the rest of the people have to guess what they are thinking about. If they guess correctly the two people have a race. It was good fun.

Caitlin – Class 2 went to Lana’s cafe. I chose toast and a cup of tea. The tea had sugar and milk in it. I liked going to the cafe it was fun at the cafe. I liked playing Toilet Tig at playtime this week. The noun game I played on the computer with Miss. Waddell was okay – we had to say if the noun was a thing, person or a place.

Dylan – I liked going to Lana’s cafe. I looked at the menu and asked Lana for a cup of tea and a jam roll. I want to go back with my mum and buy her a morning roll.
I used the special highlighter to find the nouns with Mrs Clark. I was good at it. I found the nouns Dipper and dolphin.

Cody – I have been doing some work and some fun stuff at school this week. I have been doing maths and learning about nouns, nouns are naming words. I have been doing maths in my integration class this week. On Tuesday we went to Lana’s tea-room which is a cafe near the school. I had a drink when I was there. It was fun at the cafe and Aiden had tea for his drink.

P5d

It’s been a very busy time in p5d!

Last Friday we had a Victorian tea party. All the children really enjoyed sharing their learning with the parents. We did lots of different activities including copper plate writing, making thumatropes, peg dolls and fortunes tellers. We also had a tea party with homemade scones and cucumber sandwiches and we had tea in fancy cups like the Victorians would have! The adults found our Victorian tea party etiquette amusing. We finished the morning off with a Victorian song that everyone really enjoyed.

Lucy M – I enjoyed making a fortune teller with mt mum.

Teigan R – having my mum in class was exciting and we made a peg doll.

This week we visited New Lanark as part of our Victorian topic. We visited the Victorian school room where we dressed up as Victorian school children and had a pretend lesson. We also went on the Annie McLeod ride which told us about her life in the Victorian times. We were all surprised that children would work a 10 hour day and then go to school afterwards. Mrs Drummond thinks this is a great idea!

Rachel Q – I really enjoyed the Annie McLeod experience.

Also, we have been learning how to stretch sentences. We can all see a difference in our work already! We now know how to make our sentences more interesting by using who, why, where, when and what.

Mhairi H – I know when there is a noun I can add an adjective to make it more interesting.

That’s all folks!

Inside our bodies…..

This week we have been learning about what goes on inside our bodies.  We enjoyed exploring the organs which work inside our bodies, and are very curious to find out more about what they all do!

We were interested to find out that most of the organs are a similar pinky colour, and were fascinated with the length of our intestines!

In French this week we have been learning to count from zero to five, and practising greetings.

Thank you to all of the family members who attended a busy shared-start event yesterday.  We love welcoming you into our classroom 🙂
