Blast from the Past!

P7m went to the Bathgate Partnership Centre to see what it was like in World War 1 as a soldier. We went to the library to meet Cybil. The class was then split in to two groups, and one group went outside to see the trenches and the other group looked at the display and answered questions about World War 1.

Mya – I thought the trenches were interesting.

Laura – The tour was very good because it was full of facts that I didn’t know

Chloe – I enjoyed going through the trenches and looking at the food the soldiers would have eaten and the helmets.

Caitlin – I enjoyed looking at the bed and thought it was interesting that it would have been for two people in such a small space. Although I might have liked that it was small because it would have been cold.

Kieran – I enjoyed looking at the photographs and answering questions and found it interesting using morse code.

Findley – I found it fascinating when we were in the trenches and we learned about going over the top. We were told that if the soldiers looked over they might have got shot.

Melissa – I found it intriguing that they would have lived for so long in such a crammed place and also the technology they would have used. We found out how they would have heated their food and the tablets that helped them.

Liam – I was amazed to find out how they lived in such a small space.

Lewis – I liked looking at the photos and learned what the West Lothian batalian was called. They were called the Dandy Ninth.

Alex – I enjoyed learning about the helmets. We learned that after a couple of years the metal helmets were used which would protect a soldier from a bullet and bombs.

Andrew – The trenches were built by 16 year old apprentice joiners from West Lothian College.

Amanda – I think it was disgusting how they got Trench Foot. The soldiers got it because their feet were in water for days. They might have to get it amputated.

Rachel – I learned that there were little holes in the sand bags that would have been made in to bedrooms. I also learned that they would heat their food using a gel that they would heat up. You could buy the gel in Boots.

Aidan – I learned about the medical place where the doctor would be helping soldiers that got brought in.

Cameron – We got told that if a bomb was thrown in the trench then the zig zags of the trench would help save people. I thought that was interesting.

Adam – I enjoyed looking at the photos. The picture of the Trench Foot was gross!

Nathan – I liked trying on the helmets.

Jamie – I learned that the soldiers made a hole in a bench and go to the toilet. They tried to get rid of the smell by covering it with dirt. If they were lucky they would have been sent sheets of toilet tissue and if not might have used old letters or pages from a book.

Luke – I learned that they used wooden guns to train

Billy – I enjoyed going to try the helmets on and I enjoyed learning how small the bedrooms would have been.

Brydon – I learned that the trenches were zig zagged so the blasts wouldn’t kill or injure as many people.

Cameron – The soldiers named parts of the trenches so that they could communicate where they wanted to go.

Primary 3 have had a very busy week. We have finished writing our George’s Marvellous Medicine stories and next week we will be re-drafting them to go up on the wall for everyone to see. We are very proud of our stories. We designed a new front cover for our own book about a marvellous medicine.

We have been learning more about forces and this week we were learning about friction. We know that friction is a force which occurs when two surfaces rub together. We set up an experiment to find out which surface would allow a car to travel the furthest. We had to make the experiment fair so we used the same car and ramp each time. We also let the car go and did not push it. We tested the car on the corridor floor, carpet, material and whiteboards. We first predicted what would happen and some of us got it right. The car traveled the furthest on the corridor floor.

We all really enjoyed the pantomime on Thursday. We really enjoyed singing and dancing along to the music and we found it very funny!

See you next week. Remember our Christmas party is on Tuesday!

P3b

Yesterday we went a trip out to the Regal theatre to watch a panto. It was called Robin Crusoe. We really enjoyed it. Here are some of our thoughts:
‘I enjoyed the part when the witch doctor came.’ – Evie

‘I thought it was really exciting to see and a really good show.’ – Rachael

‘My favourite part was when Robbie, Sarah and the princess were trapped in the boiling pot.’ – Eva

‘My favourite part was when Robbie and the princess got married.’ – Freya

‘My favourite part was when they killed the baddie’ – Calvin

‘My favourite part was the epic battle.’ – Aidan

‘ I liked the bit where Friday was singing Happy.’ – Olivia

‘It was funny when Friday was running in slow motion’. Daniel

This week in our forces topic we learned about magnets. We learned that magnets attract metal made of iron, colbalt and nickel. We also discovered that magnets attract each other when the north and south poles face each other. We did an experiment to see what materials are magnetic and non-magnetic. We found that paper clips, pennies and nuts and bolts are magnetic whereas as toy cars and pebbles are not.

Bye for now,

P6H

A very busy week in 6H with our final music workshop, the Pantomime and our Christmas party. Phew!

First of all our music workshops.  We have had an amazing ten weeks learning about improvisation, how to make music using apps, hardware hats and makey makey.  Feel free to ask us all about it we are great at explaining it! Our Instructor said we were the best class at using different objects to make sounds.

We all had a great time at our Christmas Party, with lots of  games and fun.  A big thank you to Mr Stutt for the fabulous music – it was much better than Mrs Haddifon wanting to play Michael Buble….

And finally to the Pantomime.  We ploughed through the snow and made it to the Regal Theatre for Robinson Crusoe.  Oh no you didn’t! Oh yes we did! And what a great tome we had!  All the traditional panto lines were included and with some fabulous audience participation it was a great afternoon!

We hope to see you all on Thursday 18 December at 3pm for our Topic Showcase.  Come with us on a trip to our Caribbean Island, where the temperature is hot, the cocktails are tropical and the learning is awesome!  What more could you want in this cold weather?

See you there.

Class 1 blog

It was time for our Christmas lunch this week. We all ate together in the snug. It was decorated with Christmas things.

Yolie – I like Christmas lunch.

Jake – I got a hat in the cracker. A red one.

Joe – At Christmas lunch I had a packed lunch. We ate in the snug. I pulled a cracker by myself, the hat in it was light blue.

Some of Class 1 went to the pantomime this week. We had to walk to the theatre in the snow. Here are some of the things we enjoyed.

Lewis – In the panto someone said “Get back here right now!” and they were running in a circle. It was funny.

Jayden –In the pantomime the princess gave us a recipe. She was wearing an orange dress. The pirate took the treasure chest and the he brought it back. It was a funny panto.

Joe – I went to the panto. I saw Robinson Crusoe. The man pulled his hair off!

Gabriel – I saw the bad pirates and a guy with a flag in the pantomime. I loved it. The eyes were glowing yellow.

There was great excitement when it snowed on Thursday! Some of us went outside when the snow was falling to see what it felt like.

David – I fell over in the snow. I knocked over Yolie’s mountain. I like the snowman. He was cold.

Jake – The snow melted. It’s slippery. I threw a snowball.

Yolie – I like to lie down in the snow and be Frozen. Anna and Elsa like snow

Other highlights of our week were:

Lewis – I had fun in the rainbow room with Miss Waddell and Yolie. We played in a little hole and we got squashed.

Jayden – I was making crispie cakes and I ate it at home. We made it in the snug. We put chocolate in and crispies in and we wait for the chocolate to melt.

Class 3 Ho Ho Holidays are coming!

This week class 3 have been super busy with lots of festive activities.
Our topic about the war has now came to an end and to celebrate this we had our very own VE Day party. It was great looking at how people from throughout history celebrated and creating our own decorations for the party was really fun!
The children tell us their highlights of the week below.
Caitlin: “This week we went to the Panto in Bathgate at the Regal Theatre. There was lots of dancing in the show. I enjoyed it, some of the bits were funny. This week we also had a party about when World War Two ended. There was flags around the tables and we made paper chains using colours from the British flag.”
Callum: “This week has been awesome! I’ve enjoyed everything, even coming to school! Christmas Lunch was great. Our classroom was decorated and we had Christmas music. The Panto was funny and good, I laughed my head off!”
Cary: “ I went Christmas shopping for Out and About, I got a present for my brother and sister which I wrapped in school. I loved my Chirstmas lunch, it was yummy! I really enjoyed the panto because it was funny. At swimming I got a big float this week because next week I am going on holiday! I won’t be back at school until the new year 2015!”
Josh: “I’ve had fun this week, I did a lot of Christmas things. I went to primary 7 party, it was good. On Out and About I bought gifts for my family. I didn’t go swimming because I was at the party. Im looking forward to the last full week of school!” 

Our week in p7b

Our learning:

Callum: We learned that the Holocaust was when the Jews got sent to Concentration Camps and they were split into two lines. The ones who were fit enough to work in one and the weaker people in another and they were sent to the gas chambers.

Kieran: We learned about two people from Auschwitz who managed to escape. They were called Wessler and Vrba. They escaped by hiding in the wood pile for three days and then they headed to Slovakia but unfortunately when they told people about what was happening in the camps, nobody believed them.

Flyn: We learned that Anne Frank was a girl who was 13 years old and she and her family lived in Amsterdam. They were jews so hid from the Nazis in a secret annex above her father’s factory. Only a few people knew about them and helped them get food. They could only move about when the workers were finished their shifts.

Paul: She wrote in her diary about her fears and hopes and after she was taken by the Nazis her dad decided to turn it into a book for other people to read because it gives a message of keeping hope despite being in a difficult position. It has sold millions and millions of copies.

Finlay: We had our Christmas Party yesterday afternoon and it was fun. We played a lot of games like Pass the Parcel and Musical Knees and Musical Arms.

Jay: We played the Corners game where people got eliminated from a different corner each time the music stopped. The winner was Mya from p7m.

Lauren U: We finished reading The Boy In Striped Pyjamas. I found the end very sad and on Monday we are going to watch the film and then we’re going to compare the differences between the book and film.

Who has impressed?

Kieran: Flyn has impressed me because he was really trying hard in drama this week to perform without his script.

Flyn: Mr Berginis has impressed me because he helped me through some difficult things this week.

Antonia: Lauren C has impressed me because she can play the top line and bottom line of Little Donkey on the clarinet.

Emily: The whole Woodwind group and brass impressed me because we worked well together to learn and play Little Donkey.

Lauren C: Kendal and Ellie have impressed me with how well they are taking on their new instruments.

Lauren K : Antonia has impressed me because she has adjusted to her new line in Little Donkey very well.

Adam: Flyn impressed me by not giving up on his maths even though he found it tough.

Mr Berginis: The class have impressed me on lots of occasions this week. They impressed me with how much fun they had at our party and how well behaved they were and they were fabulous with their p1 buddies today.

Festive fun!

We have had lots of festive celebrations this week in school.

We have performed TWO nativities in front of parents, friends, grandparents, and many more! We have also had our Christmas lunch (YUM YUM!). Lastly we walked down to the Regal Theatre and watched the Christmas pantomime. It has been lots of fun and here are our highlights of the week:-

Lucas – I enjoyed the pantomime
Katie – I also enjoyed the pantomime

If you have bought your Nativity DVD, we hope you enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed making it!

Thank you!

Special visitors in p2bg

This week in p2 we had a visit from some special visitors. Claire from Rintouls Pet Shop came to visit us and kindly brought some pets for us to learn about and to touch and hold. We really enjoyed this visit, even though we found some of the animals a bit scary. There was a rabbit, a guinea pig, a tortoise, a tarantula, a corn snake, 2 bearded dragons and 2 giant snails. We learned that giant snails are very hygienic pets to have as they carry very few bacteria.

William “I liked the snake.”
Alfie “I liked the snake and the tortoise.”
Amy “I liked the rabbit.”
Hannah “I liked all the animals.”
Katie “I liked the rabbit but I didn’t like the snake.”
Mrs Gallagher “I liked the tarantula and I loved getting a chance to hold it!”

Here are some pictures from our visit:

We also really enjoyed our visit to the pantomime this week too. We thought it was really funny.

A reminder that our Christmas party is next Thursday afternoon. The cost of £2 should be paid to the school office if it has not been already.

p4m 8.12.14

This week we have had fun making different Christmas crafts to decorate the classroom and have also made a Scots words clothing line.  Some of our favourite words that we could remember were troosers  and baffies!

We have also made some very artistic cards inspired by the Scottish artist, Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

In maths we have been adding 2 digit numbers to 3 digit numbers- some of us found this quite a challenge at the start but are now starting to really enjoy it! With Mrs Ghafoor we have been subtracting  2digit numbers.

We have felt very Christmassy this week after our writing the beginning of our stories to’ The Christmas Elf’, eating our Christmas lunch and some of us have really enjoyed singing Christmas songs in choir. To top off the week we had great fun at the pantomime on Thursday!

Monster Celebrations in 5m

We’ve had an exciting week in P5m with our Party on Tuesday and our Christmas Dinner on Wednesday. We’re all looking forward to the Panto tomorrow. Being the hard workers that we are, we still managed to find time amongst all the celebrations to complete our Loch Ness Adventures. We have been working on them for the past three weeks and now have to wait, with bated breath, to find out which stories are to be turned into animations.

It will be a difficult choice because we have all been working so hard on developing our Writing Skills!

From the Blog Post Box:

In Writing I find it helpful when…

…we plan our work the day before so that we can think about it at night. Ella

…I get left alone to do my plan and ideas. I like to have only a little bit of help. Jane

…I use my plan and the Core Writing Skills checklist. Casey

…I get immediate feedback because I can improve my story there and then. Gemma B

…I gather millions of ideas on my plan. Olivia

…I plan my story in a group with the Planning Professors. Connor

I have written feed-forward. It helps me improve my next story with my teacher’s help. I also like it when we discuss our work with our Writing Buddy because they can share their opinion as well. Lucy

A fast & fun week for us!

This week we started with planning our imaginative story. It was called ‘The Three Wishes’. We had to think of two characters and then think of the three wishes they would want in the story. Most of us found this quite tricky as the three wishes had to link into each other as in the story that was read to us.
In our Topic ‘Broons Aroond Scotland’ we have looked at maps of the world, the UK and of Scotland. We found out that the canon fired at Edinburgh castle, every day at 1 o’ clock, is linked to the dropping of ‘the Time Ball’ in Nelson’s Monument on top of Calton Hill, Edinburgh. The Time Ball can be seen by ships out at sea and the gun fired can be heard by the ships at sea. This was a method of communication in the past for captains to synchronise their watches to 1 o’ clock so that they could set their chronometers to guide their ships at sea! The firing of the gun meant that even if it was misty (Haar) the captains would know the time.
We found out why it rains in Scotland so much and why Scotland is so green. We get Orographic rain! 10 house points if you can tell us what this means!
We also explored how circuits are built and how they link together to pass electricity to power a bulb or buzzer. We had great fun creating different circuits and joining groups to share resources and thus make better and bigger circuits.
In outdoor P.E we have been learning about a game called ‘Rounders’. We are now getting the hang of how to play this game as it was very confusing to begin with!

Enjoy your weekend!

We have been extremely bust this week practising our assembly. We really enjoyed performing our assembly to everyone. We have worked hard on our campaign and food bank so it was great to share our learning with the school and community. Thanks to everyone who came along to support us in our assembly.

The food bank collection box is at the office. We will be making a donation to the food bank before Christmas so any donations would be very much appreciated. We will then keep collecting food all year todonate to the local food bank.

We also had shared start on Wednesday. Thanks to everyone that came along. Miss Elliot sadly missed the shared start but she was very impressed with the Christmas crafts that were made!

Well done everyone…I will put up another phrase for next week !

We also had a” Can you find and count from the Christmas traffic”…you had to look really hard at all the vehicles to find for example a reindeer or a santa in a sports car or 20 presents….

There were lots of lovely books to enjoy as well in our library-one of them was The night before Christmas. What a great story that is !

You could also finger paint a snow man …

Thank you if you managed along. We loved having you all 🙂
