Paige and Stacey: “We enjoyed re-enacting the Broons comic strip in drama”

Mrs Ghafoor’s class were learning their 8 times tables and enjoyed using ‘Jazz hands’ to practice it.

We also had lots of fun playing new games in maths to help us learn our 2,5 and 10 times tables!

This week we have been looking at comics and reenacting them into freeze frames. This is quite tricky as we have to show what is happening in the scene as well as using body and facial language. Our ‘Cool in School’ knowledge has been helping us to express emotion in this task. In ‘Cool in School’ we are learning that we don’t always need to go straight to an adult but can try some strategies first. We did lots of role play in this. When we tried an ‘aggressive’ response we found this to be quite hard as we kept adding in please!! Mrs. Ghafoor said we were the nicest ‘bullies’ she had ever met!
In maths we’ve been learning our eight times table through different games.
Music with Mr. Gregory – our NYCOS Music instructor was cancelled this week but we did get a very special visit from Mathew Fitt. Mathew Fitt is a children’s author who writes books in Scots. He inspired us to make our own Scots Monster and taught us the names of different body parts – in Scots of course! Do you know what ‘wallies’and ‘knaps’ are?!
We also had a special treat from Miss Mowat’s class. They sang a song called ‘Leezie Lyndsay’and taught us the chorus. It was really fun!
Enjoy your weekend.

Journey through the Nile

We are really enjoying our Journey through the Nile topic. This we had a closer look at the role of Egyptian slaves. For story writing, we wrote a diary extract which included daily events in the life of a slave.
We also played two Ancient Egyptian board games. They are called Seega and Mehen. Seega is a bit like the game noughts and crosses and Mehen reminds us of Ludo. We had great fun playing these games.
We decided we are changing our science lab into a pyramid. We discussed what we would like in our pyramid. This includes; hieroglyphics, death masks, jewellery, mummies and snakes!
Next week, we are going to learn more hieroglyphics and complete more art activities.

Investigating Viking Longships

The boys in class 2 have been learning to use a range of sources to find information. Our mission this week was to find out more information about Viking Longships.

Cameron already knows some sources that he uses to find out more information about The Vikings.

‘I use the teachers, books, pictures and Google’. Cameron

This week we used the BBC Primary History website and were all able to access this independently. We were able to navigate the Viking Longship page to help us complete our question sheet.

GEDC1223

Here is some of the information that we discovered:

  • Vikings uses Longships for war and raiding as they were fast and could be used to sail in deep and shallow waters.
  • Vikings used smaller, slower boats for fishing.
  • The sail was made out of woven wool.
  • The Vikings used the sun, stars and landmarks to help find their way.

We are going to use our notes on Viking Longships to help us create information leaflets for P4G, who will soon be learning about the Vikings.

Our future missions will be to select from a variety of sources to help us to find out more about information about The Vikings! Some of us believe that the information we found out is definitely true because we found it online. We will also be investigating the extent to which different information sources can be trusted.

We have been very busy making Longship models and creating a map to show the routes travelled by the Vikings when they made their way to Scotland.  Take a look at our work so far.

P1w working together!

This week P1w have been playing games to help solve problems. We think that working with a partner or in a group will always be good for helping each other. We have also decided that if we are stuck doing something, we know that we can always ask a friend to help us!

Some of the games we played that helped us work together were:
-Sitting and standing. We had to find a partner and go back-to-back and link our arms together. Then we had to try and sit down without breaking the link! It was really funny!!
-Snap. We were all given a card each and then we had to try and find all the people who had the same card as us and get into a group. It was really tricky, but we all worked together.
-Shape writing. We worked with a partner and drew shapes on each other’s hands and the other person had to guess the shape we were drawing.

We have also been playing group games with our buddies and learning how to share and take turns. Miss Wilson has been so impressed with how well we have been working together this week 🙂

Class Dojo winner this week: Lucas Kean!

Lots of Learning in Class 3!

Josh: On Monday I went to the Balbardie p7 Burns Supper. There was lots of speaking and dancing. There was haggis to eat. It did not try it. I liked the Irn-Bru. It was great fun! I am really enjoying learning about the Amazon. I am looking forward to my birthday next month. We will have a party in Class 3.

Geordie: I really enjoyed the Burns Supper on Monday. The best parts were dancing and drinking Irn-Bru. The dancing was tiring. We have been practising it at PE. It was a Scottish dance. I am excited for my Aladdin performance today.

Caitlin: This week we have been learning more about the rainforest. We have been writing stories about a snake. We have been creating animal fact files. I am finding out about butterflies. In my p5 class, we have to try and fill in the words about Islam and Mohammed.

Cary: I liked how swimming was easier this week and doing my monsters vs monsters writing. For this I was going to do bat vs eagle, but I did not want to, so I took monsters out of my book from home. The first one I did was mini vs desert mushroom then I did frostbite vs leaf thrower. They are very detailed. I wrote about their character profile, especially their powers, then I decided who would win in a battle.
I think my January has been not too bad!

A very traditional week in p7b

On Monday we held our Burns Supper in the hall:

Ellie: “I enjoyed the Burns Supper and there were loads of guests. At the end we sang Auld Lang Syne. I liked the mashed potato best.”

Kendal: “My favourite part of the Burns Supper was singing Auld Lang Syne at the end because it was fun.”

Lauren U: “We ate haggis, neeps and tatties. My favourite was the tatties even though I don’t ususally like them!”

Kieran: “I want to say thank you and well done to the junior choir and Adam for their brilliant performances at the Burns Supper.”

Lauren C: “I enjoyed doing the dancing even though I think I failed a bit. We danced Strip the Willow and I totally forgot how to do it!”

Chloe: “I enjoyed doing the Strip the Willow because it was really fun and I really like dancing.”

p7b: “Thank you to Mrs White and Mrs Murray for all their hard work preparing and cooking the food.”

On Tuesday we attended the transition ceilidh at Bathgate Academy:

Kai: “I enjoyed the ceilidh. Before we went I felt like I didn’t realy want to go but I regret that because I enjoyed it so much.”

Kieran: “The class done well with the dancing. At one point when I was dancing I looked at my dad and he laughed and it made me laugh too.”

Lauren U: When we were dancing Strip the Willow myself and Kyra had to demonstrate for everybody else in our set how to do it.”

Lauren C: “I enjoyed it up until we had to dance with someone from another school. Even though the pupils from the other schools seemed really nice I wasn’t all that inrigued to dance with them.

Jack: “I liked how they demonstrated the dances before we did them because I had forgotten how to do some of them.”

Taylor: “I didn’t like the ceilidh because I don’t like dancing, especially when we have to do it with a stranger!”

Adam: I think that my group in Strip the Willow got a bit confused at one point!”

Who has impressed?

Kieran: “Callum has impressed me because he almost beat his best score in Big Maths. Mrs Innes too because she is organising lots of shows at the same time even though she’s not feeling very well.”

Kendal: “I’m impressed by Lauren C because she beat her best score in Big Maths. Well done to everybody else who beat their score too.”

Ellie: “I’m impressed by Kendal because she got the MVP for P.E. for January.”

Antonia: “Lauren C has impressed me this week because she stood in at the last minute for the Reply To The Laddies and did really well.”

Lauren U: “The whole class impressed me by getting the drama award for January.”

Taylor: “Flyn has impressed me by reaching step 4 along with Kendal and myself.”

Lauren C: “My table impressed me because even though we didn’t win table of the week we were good sports and took it very well.”

Flyn: “I’m impressed with Antonia because of how hard she worked to deliver the JRSO letters quickly this morning.”

Mr Berginis: “I was proud of the class for how they behaved at the both the Burns Supper and the Academy Ceilidh. Well done!”

Class 1’s week

In class this week we have been working very hard to practise our assembly. We have also been busy creating some Egyptian art work for our up coming Art Exhibition. You will find out more details about this next week. We are trying out some different activities based around patterns and shapes and will choose our best piece for the exhibition.

Lewis – I am proud of my necklace patterns.

Joe – I used yellow, blue and purple for my pattern.

P6H

We have had a musical-filled week, rehearsing for Olivia and researching characters to write descriptions and biographies.  Our first character was Fagin and it was interesting how we all came up with similar portraits of him without seeing a picture.    He was a mean man who didn’t look after children at all!

In Maths we started to look at, and learn more about, division and we are all doing well.   We will need our mental maths skills to be tip top too, when it comes to our show as we are in charge of the budget and there will be plenty of sums to do!

We got our Belgium letters out this week as well – we can’t believe its that time of year already – before we know it we will be in P7 and in Belgium!!

A Very Special Guest!

The children in Primary 4 and 5 had a very special treat this week.  A very famous author came to visit!  We have been learning Scots poems and songs, so we were very excited to hear that Mathew Fitt was coming to Balbardie!

We enjoyed learning about Mathew Fitt before we met him. We used his website to find out more information, and we prepared some great questions to ask.

Cody welcomed Mathew Fitt to Balbardie and brought him to class 2.  Mathew read some fantastic poems and stories to us.  They were very funny.

‘Some of the poems were disgusting!’ Dylan

We listened to ‘King O The Midden’ and ‘The Three little Pigs’ from The Little Book o Fairy Tales.

We learned that Mathew started writing poems when he was in Primary 6 and his favourite subjects at school were Writing and History.

We are looking forward to hearing some more of Mathew Fitt’s stories and poems.

Lots of learning in P3/2

Last week was extremely exciting and busy in P3/2….

We are learning lots about The Radical Romans-we watched a short film about Julius Caesar and learned he had his own army who invaded Britain twice but didn’t build a fort there.

We found out that everyone wore togas. The emperor’s toga was purple !  Leather sandals were worn too even by the soldiers ! You could tell in the towns how important people were by their toga !

We also found out about chariot racing. It was held in a huge stadium where people all went. Before the racing began clowns and acrobats performed. It was a fun day out.

As well as all our Roman work we are delighted to announce Emma Wherrett was our Pupil of the week for her amazing Julius Caesar art and  Ben Marr was our class winner for the Scots Poetry competition. Our star writers were Alfie Garvey, Robert Brand and David Starrs. Well done !

P4g

We’ve had a busy few weeks!

We’ve had a look at poetry over the last few weeks. We practiced our poems and had 4 class winners. They were Megan, Zoe, Sophie and Jennie. Our class winner was Zoe and the school winner was also Zoe. We all loved the twist that Zoe had at the end of  ‘A Red, Red Rose’ by Robert Burns. Well done for your effort girls!

In class we have been learning about different types of poems and have written acrostic poems, Scots poems and preposition poems. The preposition poem was a tricky poem to write because we weren’t writing in sentences!

In maths we have been learning how to multiply by 10 and 100 and revising multiplying by 2, 3, 4 & 5. We have also been learning about money and working out how much change we would get from the shopkeeper if we gave him £1.

In topic we researched Aberdeen and made information leaflets for things to do, see and places to eat. We found that in Dundee, there is a street called ‘Bash Street’ named from the comic ‘Beano’ and there are large statues of comic characters in the city centre.

Bye for now

P4m 19.1.15

We have had another great week in P4m.Continuing on with our Scottish topic we learned the Scottish dance ‘Strip the Willow’ on Monday and presented our power points about famous Scottish people on Tuesday. We enjoyed our NYCOS workshop on Tuesday as well. We had a real treat on Wednesday with Mrs Jamieson. She brought in lots of different Scottish food for us to taste! The oatcakes with haggis, neeps and tatties disappeared very quickly!

We have been practicing our drama skills this week too.  We explored how to do freeze frames and spotlighting and are looking forward to using these skills next week when we act our our ‘Broons’ comic strip! Well done to the poetry competition winner- Katya! Some of the pictures show groups enjoying maths games and practicing emotional/improvisational freeze frames during drama. 100_1065 100_1068 100_1069
