A special letter for p2bg

This week we received a special letter. The letter was from a knight called Nicholas who wants to help us to learn about castles. Nicholas is going to set us challenges to complete and has promised us that if we complete the challenges we will be rewarded with a banquet.
Our first challenge was to learn about the job of a knight and to make a coat of arms to reflect our family. We learned that in medieval times boys would start their training to become a knight aged 7 or 8. This job was called a page. A page had lots of things to learn including how to carve meat and serve food, how to hunt with birds of prey, how to use a sword, how to play chess, how to read and write, how to dance and how to ride a horse. They also had to learn good manners. We are going to be rewarded with extra dojo points when we use good manners in class.
We made our own family coat of arms which showed things we enjoy, things we are good at or things we would like to achieve in our lives. Some of us also included our family names on the coat of arms.
We think we have successfully completed our first challenge and look forward to seeing what Nicholas wants us to do next. 🙂

Primary 3/2 are digging !

This week we have been digging for Roman artefacts like archaeologists….

We found lots of pieces of pretend pottery that made up a Roman pot.

We had to use a little brush to push the sand away so that we could uncover all the bits.

We even stuck the pieces down and dated the find.

If we had been real archaeologists we might even have used a sieve and a magnifying glass to examine all the finds !

Hope you have a super holiday weekend !

P6s

The children in P6 have been busy this week rehearsing for the Olivia show. We have worked hard each afternoon to learn our words, songs and dances and it is really starting to come along well. Some of us were busy taking pictures during rehearsals and have created comic strips with these to showcase our learning.

During class time we have been focussing on persuasive language  and used what we learned to create posters to encourage people to come along and see our show in March. Mrs Jamieson has been working hard with a small group of us to set up a fundraising event which will take place during school on 4th March (more details will follow).

Also this week we have been creating our final pieces for the Art Exhibition on Thursday 26th February. We have chosen a movie theme for our pictures to link in with our ‘Lights, Camera’ Action’ topic and can’t wait to show them all off on the day!

We are really enjoying our new topic. During the last couple of weeks we have been working in small groups to create a storyboard then script for the movies we have made up together. In the next few weeks we will begin creating scenery and props and then finally begin recording our movies using iMovie.

We hope that everyone enjoys the long weekend and is feeling refreshed coming back to school next week as we have lots planned for our big show!

Class B make their own Information Leaflets

Class B know lots about The Vikings. We have been using lots of different sources to help us learn, and have written some notes about Viking Longships. Since we know lots about The Vikings we decided to use our notes to create information leaflets. We were great at turning our notes into sentences.

‘We’re making leaflets because we’re going to give them to P4G to help them learn about the Vikings.Cameron

‘So that P4G knows about The Vikings’. Dylan

‘The East Links Family Park is my favourite leaflet because it has a picture of soft play’. Liam

blog 2

We enjoyed watching a BBC Bitesize clip which gave us tips for creating leaflets. We also enjoyed looking at information leaflets in class and were about to spot some interesting features.

‘It is decorated. It is decorated with pictures and writing. Some of the writing is different. Some are medium, some are big and even some are small.’ Cameron

‘Inside leaflets we can find pictures and writing to give us information.’ Cody

blog 1

Next week we will finish our leaflet and deliver them to P4G. We hope the boys and girls enjoy reading our leaflets and learn more about Viking Longships.

P2m

P2m have been really busy preparing for The Art Exhibition to be held in our new extension on the 26th February 3.30-6pm.  We have been busy creating wonderful Caribbean Sunsets using the technique of Pointillism.  We think they look fantastic! 🙂 Please come along if you can to view and/or purchase our artwork.

In maths this week we have been busy learning about adding coins up to £1 and learning digital and analogue clock times.  We have been using out ‘Time’ games of ‘Race the clock’ and ‘Stop the clock’ to challenge us with getting a best time and score.  We have also been trying to improve our mental maths scores with ‘Big maths…beat that’ challenges.  We are getting faster at adding our numbers together!

We have been learning about the Pet Shop in our topic work and Miss McDougall is very impressed with the homelearning task of making a pet shop animal this week.

p2bg news

This week in p2bg we worked hard creating our art work for the art exhibition. Our work has a Scottish theme and you’ll be able to view and buy at at the exhibition at the end of the month.
In Maths we’ve been working hard to practise our addition and lots of pupils have improved their big maths scores this week.
We are learning more songs for our p2 show, some of us even have solo singing parts.
For our review jotters this week we thought about what we have enjoyed most in school, here are some of our responses:
Amy – ‘I liked the new role play area in class.’
Teighan – ‘I enjoyed doing class talks, RME and Big Maths’.
Murray- ‘I liked using the ipads in Maths’.
Lucas- ‘I enjoyed RME, Maths and reading this week’.

P4g

Another busy week!
This week we focussed on our freeze frames. Mrs Ghafoor took pictures of our freeze frames and we then turned them into comics by adding in scenes and speech bubbles. They look really good.
In maths we have been practising ‘Jazz Hands’ to learn our times tables – they do work! We also played different games on the netbooks to help us with learning our times tables.
In Cool in School we have been learning about last chance warnings and how to use them effectively. We have also been learning about a cool stance – this shows how we should stand when we respond.
We were also learning about ‘Kosher’ and ‘Treifah’ foods. These are foods that Jews will and won’t eat. They have lots of different rules about what and when they can eat the foods. We impressed Mrs Ghafoor by creating a menu for a Jewish friend. We made sure that all food was ‘Kosher’ by following the rules. Did you know that Jews won’t eat a cheeseburger?! That’s because it has cheese and dairy in the same meal which is not allowed.
Enjoy your weekend.

P3e

We have all became Ancient Egyptian scribes this week. We have been learning about hieroglyphics which are the symbols Egyptians used to write. We designed our own cartouches and wrote our names on them in hieroglyphics. We decorated our pyramids in class using the symbols. It has also been an arty week as we have been busy creating our masterpieces for the art exhibition. We have been learning about using colour and shape to create a repeating pattern. We are looking forward to sharing our final design with the rest of the school.

In writing we have started our story about a pyramid adventure. We were learning how to use speech as a way to open a story. This is quite a difficult thing to do but we all tried really hard. The openings of our stories sound really interesting and Miss Elliot is looking forward to finding out what will happen inside the pyramids!

See you next week!

P6H

We have really enjoyed creating our Art work this week, and can guarantee you will be amazed!  So please remember to pop along to our exhibition at the opening of our new gym hall!

Our rehearsals for Olivia are going well and we are now able to sing and say our lines without our scripts.  We have been measured for costumes, and are nearly finished designing some of the scenery. We have seen bits of Annie, My Fair Lady and Oliver and this has helped us put together the history of our characters and create biographies for them.  Look out for our posters around the school and do come and see our show!

P1l ‘Day for Change’

P1l took part in ‘A Day for Change’ today.

We listened to a story about a girl called Cherlyn, who lives in Rawis, a small town in the Philippines. Cherlyn and her family had to leave their home and go to a shelter because there a typhoon, a very serious storm.

We discussed what we would take with us, if we had to leave to go to a safe place (evacuation centre). Here are a few answers:

“A first aid kit” (Zara).

“Water, a teddy bear to cuddle in to and a phone” (Rory).

“My teddy called Flopsy” (Owen).

We had some super suggestions, well done to P1.

We then drew pictures of the things we would take to the safe place.

UNICEF helped during this emergency by providing safe, clean drinking water, food and medicine. UNICEF helped children find their parents and vaccinated children against disease. UNICEF has helped more than 925,000 people like Cherlyn in the Philippines. They work hard to help children keep safe from danger in an emergency.

Burns Supper

Apologies for the delay in the photos. Last week we had a great time at our Burns supper. We enjoyed listening to the choir and Adam singing, the piper, Burns’ poems, Scottish dancing and of course Haggis Neeps and Tatties.

This week our highlights include learning to play basketball in PE, starting Slap Stick comedy sketches in drama and planning our art project for the gallery. We also had a visit from Mrs McKinnon from Bathgate Academy who explained a little more about the three Houses and who the children can speak to if they have any problems.

PS. There was a little delay in homework this week because of photocopying issues. The class copied down their homework and now the printer is working they have been issued their maths!

It’s a pirate’s life for me!

We have been very busy this week adding lots of things into our floorbook on Treasure Island. We have also been asking questions and writing them in the book so we can think about what we want to learn next. It is exciting that we get to choose what we want to learn!

105_2372

105_2373

On Monday we made hard tack biscuits! These were made by pirates on their travels and were easy to make as there were only 4 main ingredients. These were:
1. Flour
2. Milk
3. Butter
4. Sea salt

105_2364

Eva – I ate mine. It was good!
Donna – I thought it was great.
Archie – I ate some of it, but my dad wanted to eat the rest.
Hannah – I ate mine and it was soft.
Tamsyn – I didn’t like mine, but I put jam on it and it tasted nice.
Aaron – It was fantastic!
Maisie – I liked it because I put jam on it.
Dylan – I didn’t like it so I put it in the bin.
Shaun – I thought it was fantastic and I took a big bite of it!

There were lots of opinions on the hard tack biscuits, but I think we all agreed that eating the same things every single day on a pirate ship would not be very nice. We talked about foods we really disliked and how that would be to eat those foods every single day.

Yesterday we were learning about all the different jobs you could have on a pirate ship. Some of these were:
-Master Gunner
-Captain
-Chef
-Cabin boy
-Boatswain
-Carpenter & surgeon
-Rigger
-Master Sailor

We looked at what all these jobs entailed and then we got into groups of 3 and we had to perform actions in front of the rest of the class. The class then had to guess what job we were performing just by looking at our actions and what we were saying. This was really fun and everyone did a fantastic job in this role play task.

105_2376

We have also started learning about coordinates and this will help us to create our own treasure maps! We have made one in class and here are some pictures of us pointing to coordinates and telling the class what they are:

105_2367

Next week we want to learn more about pirate language and what they drank on the ship! We are excited to learn more 🙂

Have a lovely weekend!

The Vikings Are Coming!

As you know, Class 2 are learning about The Vikings. We learned that The Vikings came to Orkney in Northern Scotland. We’ve been looking at photographs of the Orkney coastline to get an idea of what The Vikings would have seen on their approach to Orkney.
We looked at pictures and were able to spot some interesting features such as…

‘the smooth shiny sea’ Liam

‘the sharp grass’ Aiden

blog 2

At Art we have been learning to create texture. We painted beautiful pictures of the Orkney shore line and named our work ‘The Vikings Are Coming!’ Our challenge was to use a range of objects to create texture in our paintings. We spoke about how the land features would feel if we were to touch them, and tried to create texture using printing techniques.

‘Texture makes your pictures smooth. You can make it smooth by using materials such as Lego, paint and even a rolling pin’. Cody

‘I tried to create rocks using a wood chip this made a rough texture. I used my finger and Lego bricks to create the sharp grassy texture’. Aiden

‘I used rough material, the texture brush and the sponge roller to paint the jaggy rocks’. Cameron
