6b

It’s been another fun and busy week of great learning in 6b.

In maths we’ve been continuing our work on decimals, in particular rounding decimal numbers to the nearest whole number or tenth; it was fun and challenging but number lines were effective in helping us with our learning. Later in the week we also looked at decimal calculations, chiefly addition and subtraction, many of these were linked to our learning on money.

In writing and topic we’ve been learning and researching information about the tribal peoples of the rainforest, it was interesting to note the very different and unique ways of living these people have. We completed fact files on three different tribes from three different rainforests and will be using this information to help us with the creation of our next written task; blog writing. At the end of the week we looked at a blog the teacher had written and we colour coded the text to highlight all of the important elements contained within it.

We’ve been continuing reading our own novels this week in class, either reading independently on our tables or with the teacher. Furthermore, we’ve been continuing on our journey with Roald Dahl’s ‘Danny, the Champion of the World’ which we should finish early next week. Democracy will be in action thereafter to choose our next class novel.

In our French language learning we’ve been continuing to look at: colours, numbers (1-50), days of the week and months of the year.

Next week we will be finishing our work on decimals in maths and beginning our new topic of percentages. In literacy we will be beginning to plan our blog articles.

Have a lovely weekend!

So much packed into a busy week!

Each table took responsibility for writing a paragraph about one part of the week that we, as a class, had enjoyed and agreed should be included in our blog.

In science, we learned how to make a compass move in water with a magnet and it works! Coins are magnetic but only the ones which have iron in them.

In language, We learnt about alliteration because we were writing headlines for our newspaper article. Some examples we came up with are Awesome Alex, Amazing Alfie, Graceful Grace, Rough Rowan and Outstanding Orlaith!

We made hats for the European Day of languages on Wednesday. We look at the flags of all the countries of Europe and chose flags to draw onto a piece of paper which we stuck on a headband. We also learnt the French names for some of the things we use in the classroom.

We learnt how to write in columns and paragraphs as we were writing newspaper reports. The most popular title was ‘Death of Darnley’

Lots and lots of children passed their tables test this week so the fuzzies were once again bouncing into tubs on Friday! The table of the week is the table with a magnificent 650 points……

Potatoes!

At the end of last year, P3B (now P4), rescued the potatoes from sports day from going to the bin. Instead, we planted them in bottles in class and watched them grow. We all took our plants home to look after and grow in our gardens during the holidays. (The bottles were too small to grow plants). The challenge was to see who could grow the most potatoes. Lilyrose won the challenge of growing the most potatoes. The attached video shows the plant that I took home and how the potatoes grew from one potato. I only got 4 tiny potatoes but that’s because I planted them out at the beginning of August.

Hi!
Potatoes

P3B

What a busy and exciting week!

In Literacy, we have been learning about the different aspects of VCOP and working with partners. We have been writing sentences – some silly! and writing instructions for what to do if a fire alarm goes off.

This week was maths week. We took part in a competition, played lots of games to help with our learning and built 2D shapes from match-sticks.

In topic, we have been learning about our responsibilities and how to help our community. We went litter picking around the school and collected a large bag of rubbish from each of the playgrounds. The P1- P4 playground was the dirtiest and messiest. Unfortunately, the rubbish was thrown out before we could take a picture to show how much litter there actually was.

In science, we have continued to look at properties of different materials. We measured the strength of a variety of materials. We learned that strength is measured in Newtons.

A big thank you to all the parents who came along to ‘Meet the Teacher’. It was a pleasure meeting you!

Maths week and school values!

As part of maths week, we have thought about how technology helps us in Maths. We were learning about how people have told the time in the past and how we do it nowadays. In the olden times, people used sundials to tell the time. We made our own sundials and we took them out to watch where the shadows fell on the dial. It was quite tricky for some of us to line up our dial with the correct time. The other problem we thought about was how people might have told the time if it was cloudy.
In modern times we can use phones, timers, laptops, tablets, cuckoo clocks, ipods, the sky, watches, the news, analogue and digital clocks, alarm clocks, the speaking clock. We even asked Siri what the time was!
We have also thought about and acted out some of our school values of respect, fairness, trust and passion. The hardest one to think about was passion but we all know that passion is a strong emotion and we know that when we are passionate about something we can show it, so it might be that we love everyone’s individuality, we love Maths or science, artclub, drama, breakfast club, drawing, multisports and we can show our passion about all of these by doing them enthusiastically and sharing our passion about them with others.
Table of the week – the table of the week competition was REALLY close this week with the Friday tables test influencing the winning table massively with just 20 points between first and third. However the winning table this week was………
ORANGE with 390 points!
We were really proud of Artjom for winning out mathemagician award this week and of Elena who was awarded P4as very first certificate for demonstrating school values.

Maths Week in P4B

This week we have had fun doing lots of exciting maths activities.  We have played games inside the classroom as well as taking our learning outside to the playground to do a maths trail.  Well done to Sophie S who won a certificate for her excellent effort in all maths and numeracy lessons all week.

In literacy we enjoyed trying out some new activities to help with our spelling and we also finished our imaginative stories.

Well done also to Emily who was the first P4B winner of the certificate for demonstrating school values.

Have a lovely long weekend.

Class Sun

Class sun have been working hard on their numbers up to one hundred, looking at place value, counting in steps, using the 2 times table or working on more and less.

In Language we have been looking at grammar and punctuation. Through out topic work we have been investigating lines for our art  and learning about the life cycle of plants and how a plant works.

We hope you all have a good long weekend.

P5a

We really enjoyed all of our Maths Week activities! We learned about codes and the Enigma machine, and we created our own codes for friends. We used concrete materials for addition and subtraction sums and we played lots of Countdown Numbers games. Week beginning 3.9.18

This week we have been learning about Mary Queen of Scots and her early life.  We made birth announcements to show our learning.

In maths we continued our learning on shape with Mrs Rodger.  We participated in number talks with Mrs Knowles where we explored lots of different strategies and learned from each other.  As the weeks progress we aim to become a lot more confident at sharing our strategies with the class.

In art we were working on shading and we created some wonderful pieces of work.

Don’t forget we are having a “meet the teacher” session on Thursday.

P3B

We have had a great week.

In literacy, we have been learning how to make a sentence. we played some games and made silly sentences – that was ok as long as they made sense. We have started using different strategies to learn our spelling, including playing boggle and being a teacher!

In maths, we have been working on identifying numbers more, less or between, and counting up and down in tens and hundreds. We have continued with identifying 2D shapes.

In topic, we discussed problems in our community and will be looking at how to tackle littering. We also looked at why rules are important and how there are common rules at all places like schools, clubs and hospitals.

Have a great weekend.
