S2 Go Coasteering!

Earlier on in the term, S2 went out on the first of their John Muir Days!

This time it was Coasteering. They had a great day – despite the weather looking like it might not play nicely! Here are some of the comments they made after their experience:

I personally LOVED the coasteering and I would 100% do it again. I felt it was well organised and very enjoyable!

It was amazing but there were a couple in jumps I couldn’t do because they were a bit too high.

I though the coasteering was brilliant, I really enjoyed it. I can’t wait to do it again.

I liked it. It was fun and I need to do it again.

It was really fun!

I liked the coasteering. It was fun to jump in and going in the cave.

The coasteering was fun, especially the end bit. (End bit = the place they could jump together and do different ‘moves.’)

I liked doing the jumps. It was good.

I liked the swimming.

I liked the coasteering because we got to swim in the sea. My favourite jump was the last one because you got to jump with your friends.

I liked the coasteering because it was something I have never done before and now I’m more confident in the water.

I felt that the John Muir trip was really fun because we got to jump in the water and swim.

Thanks to Pete Richardson for the great day out!

The next John Muir Day will be a Wild Ramble on 16th!

Visit from the Environmental Health Officer

Dawn Manson, Environmental Health Officer with Shetland Islands Council, came to visit our Home Economics class, to tell us a little bit about food hygiene so we can run the tuck shop and to tell us a little about her job.

The first thing we did was to put special gel on our hands that would reflect under a UV light and then we would wash our hands well and see what bits we missed, if any. This will help us to have good hand hygiene when we are working on the Tuck Shop, in Home Economics lessons and at home.

Then Dawn showed us pictures of situations the Environmental Health Team have dealt with in their daily jobs in Shetland, such as pollution from bonfires, needles from drug use, food hygiene problems and bugs.

She talked about qualifications needed to become an Environmental Health Officer and we researched the career on myworldofwork.co.uk.

Dawn and Emily also had a little speak with us about what we would like to do in the future.

Thank you to our DYW School Coordinator, Emily van Tonder, for organising this visit for us.

S3 Biologists at Work!

S3 pupils currently studying the circulatory system in Biology were getting to the heart of the matter this week when they dissected a sheep’s heart.    They were surprised to see how thin the heart valves were and how big some of the blood vessels from the heart were relative to the size of the heart.  Who knows, maybe there’s a future heart surgeon at work here…!

Primary House Captains

For the past few weeks Primary 7 pupils have been busy preparing their Team Captain speeches. This afternoon, they delivered their speeches to the younger primary classes before leaving them to cast their votes.

All the pupils should be proud of themselves, it’s not easy to write about yourself or speak to an audience but they all did a fantastic job.

Here are photos of our new Primary House Captains for Maalie, Shalder and Tirrick!

End of year post

The end of term has come round really quickly!

This week, we had a whole school Assembly to hand out prizes for YPI, Interhouse, Merits and General Knowledge. Mr Spence played the secondary boys penalty shootout at the assembly and reminded everybody the importance or supporting each other and having a positive mindset when facing challenges. We were also treated to fantastic musical performances from P56 and P67 before Ms Simpson was presented with a gift for her last day.

Yesterday afternoon primary pupils received certificates in their primary classes. And at the end of the day the P7’s marked their moving on to the secondary by the annual corridor run.

Today was Miss Stewart, Dr MacInnes and Mr Spence’s last day at Whalsay School. Staff and pupils had a whole school break at the primary and it was lovely to see the mix of ages enjoying their break outside.

Mr Spence was also presented with a card and gift from pupils and parents as a thank you for leading the school for almost 7 years. P234 drew some wonderful pictures for Mr Spence and he was also gifted those in a book to keep.

We would like to say a huge thank you to Mr Spence, Dr MacInnes, Ms Simpson and Miss Stewart for being great educators and colleagues and wish them all the very best for the future.

Finally well done to pupils and staff for their hard work this year, thank you to parents for the support and we look forward to seeing you in August.

Have a lovely summer.
