Curriculum Overview 2023/24: Term 1 

Literacy and English

Talking and Listening

Pupils will:

  • be able to speak at an appropriate volume and pace according to the needs of an audience.
  • be able to use gesture, expression and emphasis to engage an audience.
  • be able to identify the strategies and techniques used by effective speakers i.e. vocabulary, eye contact, body language, emphasis, pace and/or tone/or rhetorical questions.

Writing

Pupils will:

  • be able to use persuasive language in their writing.
  • be able to use notes to gather ideas before writing.
  • be able to share opinions and justify their reasons within their writing.
  • be able to identify the syllables in a word to support sounding and blending strategies.

Reading:

Pupils will:

  • be able to use a resources such as a dictionary to develop understanding of what has been read.
  • be able to read aloud with fluency and confidence.
  • be able to develop reading stamina and read for a sustained period of time.
  • be able to use strategies and criteria for selecting texts to read.

 

Numeracy and Maths

Pupils will:

  • be able to read and sequence larger numbers, including decimals.
  • be able to round a number.
  • be able to use mental strategies to add and subtract numbers, such as rounding and adjusting.
  • be able to calculate the cost of several items.
  • be able to calculate periods of time extending past an hour.

 

Health and Wellbeing

Pupils will:

  • develop their understanding of rights and responsibilities.
  • increase their awareness of fact or fiction within a social situation.

 

Topic

Develop a knowledge and understanding Europe.

Pupils will:

  • be able to use the features of an atlas to locate a country and identify it’s features.
  • be able to use research tools such as the internet and topic books to identify facts about the world around them.
  • be able to design and create a guide to countries in Europe.
  • be able to compare and contrast different European countries.

 

Technologies

Pupils will:

  • be able to identify key words to use in a search engine to find information.
  • be able to create and edit a table within MS Word.
  • Use MS Excel to create charts to compare information.

During the school year children will be using their Glow accounts to access their class MS Team. This will take place at school and as part of their homework, by completing assignments.

 

Planned Trips or Visitors

  • Childsmile representative to discuss the importance of eating healthily.
  • Visitors from Blythswood Care to discuss the shoebox appeal.

 

These targets have been identified at the beginning of the school term but may change slightly in response to children’s needs and interests.
