Whalsay School

Houses / Logo

The school has a long-standing House system – three houses, consisting of Tirrick, Maalie and Shalder. These three form the basis of all internal sports competitions, both as teams and for individual competitors. We have inter-house tournaments in both the primary and secondary sector covering basketball, netball, football, volleyball, tennis, hockey, indoor athletics and a swimming gala.

We also compete in all inter-county events and liaise with the Leisure Centre and sports clubs on the isle to submit teams to various competitions.

The logo was designed by Louise Polson in 2004 when she was a pupil at the school. The design of the logo represents the three houses coming together to form the ‘heart’ of the school. The house names are there as a reminder of our house structure. Tirrick, Maalie and Shalder are the Shetland names for the birds – tern, fulmar and oystercatcher. The house colours for Tirrick, Maalie and Shalder are used in the design – yellow, green and red respectively. The design also highlights that the school is on an island; the ‘heart’ of the school is surrounded by a blue ring.
