Pupil Council

Pupil Council Update

Our Pupil Council has continued to play an active and positive role within the school community, while also developing their leadership, organisational, and teamwork skills. They have successfully organised whole‑school events such as Children in Need, a Christmas Movie Night and Red Nose Day, all of which helped bring families and the wider community together and were very well attended.

Thanks to the generous support of families and our local community, fundraising efforts have been highly successful. More recently, the Pupil Council has launched a school tuck shop, providing pupils with valuable real‑life experiences such as handling money, managing stock levels, and taking responsibility for ensuring the shop runs smoothly.

As we move into our final term, the Pupil Council plans to introduce a suggestion box, allowing all pupils – outwith the council – to share their ideas and opinions. This initiative will further promote pupil voice and help ensure everyone has the opportunity to contribute to making Dailly Primary an even better place to learn and grow.

P5 – Term 4 Update!

Term 4 Update – Primary 5

Welcome to the start of Term 4! We’re excited to begin a new term filled with fresh learning experiences, new topics, and plenty of opportunities for pupils to grow in confidence and independence. Below is an overview of what we’ll be focusing on during the term ahead.

Mathematics
This term, our main focus in numeracy will be on number. Pupils will continue to develop rapid recall of times tables, which supports learning across many areas of maths. We will also build on our use of number talks, encouraging pupils to explore and explain a range of strategies to solve addition and subtraction calculations efficiently. In addition, learners will explore time, data handling, and measurement, strengthening their ability to apply maths skills in real-life contexts.

Literacy
In literacy, we are continuing to build oral reading fluency alongside developing strong reading comprehension skills. As part of Talk for Writing, pupils have begun their final unit on descriptive writing. This has been met with great enthusiasm, with learners enjoying creating their own imaginative stories and detailed settings while extending their vocabulary and sentence structure.

Spelling
There will be a strong focus on consolidating common and tricky words. Improving spelling accuracy will support pupils’ confidence and quality of writing across all curriculum areas.

Topic – Current World Affairs
Our topic this term  is Current World Affairs. So far, pupils have explored the Artemis II space mission, developing curiosity about science and global developments. We will soon move on to learning about the World Cup—an exciting topic, especially as our own team has qualified, which is sure to spark enthusiasm and discussion.

Physical Education & Health and Wellbeing
In PE, pupils are focusing on gymnastics and fitness circuits, building strength, coordination, and stamina in preparation for Sports Day.

Within Health and Wellbeing, we have been learning about substance misuse, including how to stay safe around medicines and household products, and understanding the risks associated with smoking, vaping, alcohol, and caffeine. Moving forward, we will explore discrimination, emotional awareness, and self-regulation. Pupils will develop coping strategies for managing big emotions and build resilience as they begin preparing for their transition into P6.

We are looking forward to a busy and positive Term 4 filled with learning, growth, and new opportunities.

P5 Term 3 Update!

P5 have had a fantastic Term Three, packed with hands‑on learning, creative activities and lots of new discoveries across the curriculum!

Maths

In Maths, we have been continuing our work on money, and the class has also enjoyed exploring fractions, decimals and percentages. Using pancakes helped us visualise and compare these concepts in a fun and memorable way! Pupils have been working on identifying equivalences and applying their learning through practical tasks.

Literacy

In Literacy, we have been diving into poetry, learning how to use strong descriptive vocabulary to paint pictures in the reader’s mind. We explored poetic techniques such as rhyme, rhythm, and creating clear rhyme patterns across lines.

We have now moved on to instructional writing, where pupils learn how to write clear, step‑by‑step instructions that someone else can follow easily. This involves using precise verbs, sequenced steps, connectives such as first, next, then, and finally, and ensuring the reader knows exactly what to do. The class has enjoyed practising this through real‑life tasks and fun classroom activities.

Science

Our Science learning this term has focused on food chains and food webs, helping us understand how animals and plants depend on one another. We have also been exploring inheritance, learning about how we become who we are and which traits can be passed down from our parents. The class has enjoyed comparing features and thinking about how characteristics are shared.

Topic: Scotland

Our Scotland topic has been a huge hit! We have been learning about famous Scottish figures and artists, exploring their contributions and achievements. Pupils have also investigated Scottish traditions, foods, clothing and cultural facts, gaining a deeper understanding of Scotland’s rich heritage.

Health and Wellbeing

This term in Health and Wellbeing, we have been learning about puberty and how to take care of our bodies as they change. We have also been exploring our rights and discussing what they look like in everyday life. Soon, we will begin our Developing the Young Workforce focus, where pupils will reflect on their own skills and qualities and how these can be used in future jobs and careers.

P5 Term 2 Update!

Term Two has been a busy and exciting time in P5, filled with hands-on learning and new discoveries across the curriculum!

Maths

In Maths, we have been exploring symmetry, transformations and angles. The class has enjoyed investigating different types of symmetry and experimenting with flips, slides and turns. We will soon be moving on to our new topic: Money, where we’ll be learning about budgeting, calculating change and real-life problem-solving.

Literacy

In Literacy, we have been developing our discursive writing skills. Pupils have been learning how to present a neutral viewpoint and explore both sides of an argument, using the question “Should school uniforms be banned?” as our focus. We’ve had many thoughtful discussions and some very convincing points made on both sides!

Science

Our Science topic this term is Electricity. The class has been building their own circuits, learning how switches, bulbs and motors work, and discovering what makes a successful electrical connection. Soon, we will be applying our new skills to create our very own Morse code devices, linking perfectly with our ongoing class topic on the Titanic.

Topic: Titanic

We are still thoroughly enjoying our learning about the Titanic. Recently, we took a fantastic trip to the Maritime Museum, where we explored how boats were constructed, investigated the building of the Titanic, and compared boats and life jackets from the past with those we use today. It was an exciting and informative experience that really brought our classroom learning to life.

Health and Wellbeing

In Health and Wellbeing, we have been focusing on food safety, health and hygiene, and mental wellbeing. Pupils have been learning strategies to support their own mental health as well as how to help others, encouraging a caring and supportive classroom environment.

P5 – Update on our learning!

We’re excited to share what we’ve been learning and enjoying so far this term. Our class teacher is Miss Connell, and we have 15 pupils in our class. We’re also supported throughout the week by Mrs Eaglesham, Mrs Morrison, Miss Mackay, and Mrs Robertson. On Thursdays, our class is taught by Mr Woods.

Our Weekly Routine

  • P.E. takes place every week on Thursday.
  • Our other PE session is either a Tuesday or a Friday!
    • If we have Outdoor Learning on a Friday (which happens every second week), P.E. will move to Tuesday.
    • If there is no Outdoor Learning that week, P.E. will take place on Friday instead.
  • Committees take place every Wednesday afternoon.
  • Outdoor Learning happens every second Friday.

Literacy – Talk for Writing

This term, our Talk for Writing focus has been on the story ‘Mr Big’.

We’ve been developing our creative writing skills by learning how to use descriptive language to bring our characters and settings to life.

So far, we have:

  • Created detailed story maps to help us retell and innovate the story
  • Collected powerful and interesting vocabulary
  • Explored how to write strong openings

We’ve been working hard to include adjectives, adverbs, interesting openers, and to create characters that go through a clear change in the story.

Numeracy and Maths

In Numeracy, we’ve been exploring 2D and 3D shapes. We’ve learned how to:

  • Name and describe a variety of 2D shapes (like triangles and quadrilaterals, polygons)
  • Irregular and regular shapes
  • Identify 3D shapes such as cubes, spheres, cones, and triangular prisms
  • Talk about their properties (sides, vertices, edges, faces)

We’ve also been learning about symmetry, and soon we’ll be diving into angles and transformations.

As always, we’re continuing to practice our core skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, and developing our problem-solving strategies too!

Topic – Travel, Tourism and The Titanic

At the start of term, we explored the topic of Travel and Tourism, looking at different destinations and types of holidays.

We’ve now moved on to a fascinating new topic: The Titanic. So far, we’ve learned about:

  • The Titanic’s voyage and why it was considered “unsinkable”
  • The tragic events that led to its sinking in April 1912
  • How Morse Code was used on board to send messages and call for help

Next, we’ll be investigating:

  • How the Titanic was built
  • What the ship looked like inside
  • What life was like for passengers in first, second, and third class

It’s been a really exciting and thought-provoking topic so far, and we’re looking forward to learning more!

Our Class Rules

As a class we have decided on the following rules which align with the following Rights – article 29, 12 and 19.

  • Be positive and always try your best!
  • Keep unkind thoughts and actions to yourself!
  • Always be respectful and listen when others are speaking!
  • Be polite!

Class Rewards and Responsibilities

We have two exciting systems in place to help us stay motivated and learn about responsibility:

  1. Shooting for the Stars – Reward Rocket

Our class earns (or loses) free choice time based on our actions and efforts throughout the week. We work as a team to make good choices and aim for the stars!

  1. Classroom Economy

Each week, we can nominate ourselves for different class jobs, and if we carry out our duties responsibly, we get “paid” on Fridays. We can also earn or lose money depending on our actions.

This helps us understand important real-world skills like budgeting, responsibility, and teamwork.
