P7/6 Term 1 2026-2027

We’re excited to share what we’ve been learning and enjoying so far this term!

Our class teacher this year is Miss Baillie, and we have 24 pupils in our class. We are supported throughout the week by Mrs Vance and Mrs Morrison.

Our Weekly Routine

  • P.E. takes place every Tuesday and Wednesday.
  • Committees take place every second Thursday afternoon.
  • Outdoor Learning takes place every second Friday.
  • Every Tuesday, Caitlin from Active Schools visits to help us develop our coaching and leadership skills.

Learning About Our Rights

This term, we have been exploring the Rights of the Child and the important articles that protect and support young people. As a class, we selected Articles 12, 19, 28, 29 and 31 as the rights that matter most to us.

We agreed that in our classroom it is important to:

  • Keep our hands, feet and unkind words to ourselves.
  • Be fair and respectful to one another.
  • Listen carefully and value everyone’s voice.

These rights have helped us create our class charter and establish a positive, respectful learning environment where everyone feels safe, included and valued.

House Captains

Everyone in our class is currently writing speeches for the House Captain election. We have been discussing the qualities that make an effective House Captain, including being a positive role model, showing responsibility and encouraging others in a supportive way.

We are working hard to write persuasive speeches that highlight our strengths, achievements and ideas for representing our houses. We are looking forward to sharing our speeches with our classmates and taking part in the election process.

Literacy: Talk for Writing

This term, our Talk for Writing text is The Canal, a warning story. We are just beginning this unit and are excited to explore the text in more detail.

Over the coming weeks, we will:

  • Learn and retell the story using actions and story maps.
  • Explore the key features of a warning story.
  • Collect powerful vocabulary and descriptive language.
  • Investigate how authors build suspense and create tension.
  • Develop our use of adjectives, similes, metaphors and expanded noun phrases.
  • Plan and write our own warning stories.

We are looking forward to developing our creativity and using exciting language to engage our readers.

Maths and Numeracy

This week, we are beginning our learning on 2D and 3D shapes.

Over the coming weeks, we will:

  • Identify and classify a variety of 2D shapes, including triangles, quadrilaterals and polygons.
  • Recognise and describe 3D shapes such as cubes, cuboids, pyramids, prisms and spheres.
  • Explore the properties of shapes, including sides, angles, edges, faces and vertices.
  • Investigate lines of symmetry.
  • Build and examine nets of 3D shapes.
  • Apply our understanding of shape through problem-solving activities and practical challenges.

We are looking forward to developing our mathematical thinking and reasoning skills through a range of engaging activities.

Science: Space

Our science topic this term is Space, with a particular focus on the Solar System.

We will be learning about:

  • The Sun and its importance to life on Earth.
  • The eight planets and their unique features.
  • The order of the planets in the Solar System.
  • The Earth’s rotation and orbit.
  • The Moon and its phases.
  • How space exploration has helped us learn more about our universe.

We are excited to investigate the wonders of space and discover more about our place within the Solar System.

Social Studies: The Scottish Parliament

This term, our Social Studies topic is The Scottish Parliament.

Throughout this topic, we will be learning:

  • What the Scottish Parliament is and why it was established.
  • The role of Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs).
  • How laws are made in Scotland.
  • The difference between local and national government.
  • How decisions made by Parliament affect our daily lives.
  • The importance of democracy and having a voice in society.

We are looking forward to learning more about how Scotland is governed and how citizens can make a difference in their communities.
