Olá from sunny Brazil. After a very long journey I have arrived in Brazil and I am now looking forward to relaxing for a few days before the big wedding. I knew you would still be looking for your homework so here it is.

Spelling: Due to this being a short week in class (remember you are out of class on Thursday for our European Language Day) we have suspended spelling for this week. Please practice your words from previous lists: especially those you may be getting wrong in our weekly spelling tests.

Book Detectives: You have been given two weeks to complete your next lot of reading and segments due to our European Language Day on Thursday and the holiday weekend. Please ensure you complete the reading of chapters 22-25 (inclusive) and both your summariser and illustrator segments.

Your summariser should include information from all of the chapters you have read. Please remember to include a short written explanation of your illustration. You should also choose your favourite part to read aloud to your group members.

This task is due for Wednesday 28th September (not Thursday due to our trip to Stirling Castle). Please ensure it is completed to allow you to take part in the class lesson.

Maths3 challenges have been set up on Mangahigh for you to complete by Mrs Hughes. All games should be played. As always you should try to achieve the highest medal you can. This task should be completed for Thursday.

Topic: Please remember to continue working on your personal project AFTER your weekly homework has been completed. You should also be taking time to practice your presentation in front of an audience. Ask someone at home to listen to you.

To access the task sheet, please click here .

Here are your reminders for the coming week.

  1. As this is a short week you will only have P.E. on Tuesday. Please remember to take your kit home to be washed.
  2. Please remember to return your consent forms for our trip to Stirling Castle.
  3. It is our House European Language day on Thursday. It is a non-uniform day so please come to school in your house colours.
  4. It is a holiday weekend. School closes at 3.15pm on Thursday and reopens on Tuesday 27th.

Have a wonderful holiday weekend. I look forward to hearing your stories when I get back (and sharing mine). See you all soon.

P5S – The Battle of Falkirk 3D Maps

Image result for lion rampant shield

Today we completed our 3D maps of the battlefield at Falkirk where King Edward I defeated William Wallace in 1298. Can you remember what dates it took place? Tell someone at home.

A huge amount of effort and hard work went into these maps. You should be very proud of yourselves. They will be on display for your parents/carers to see when they come in next month. Please remember to show them off.

Here you all are completing your maps. Is everyone on task? Are you all helping one another?

Here are the completed maps. They look fantastic! Well done everyone.

Board Games Masterclass

Image result for board games

Another Masterclass session started today and we had lots of new faces taking part. Going by the excitement at times, great fun was had by all. Once again it was lovely to see the different stages mixing with one another at times to play the games. Today we had Pokemon battles alongside chess playing and a very interesting game of Snap was also taking place.

Have a wee nosey at our photographs from today.

P5S – Enjoying Reading In Class

Everyone in class is increasing the amount of time they spend reading each week through our reading time. Even our reluctant readers seem to be enjoying our ERIC sessions: especially if they have the chance to read one of the growing number of Guiness Book of Records we have in class. These books seem to be in high demand! I may even have to start a rota for them just like the bean bags.

Here is everyone Enjoying Reading IClass today.

P5S – The Battle of Falkirk

Image result for lion rampant shield

This week in our language and topic lessons we have been learning all about the Battle of Falkirk. Please tell someone at home some of the interesting facts you have been learning about the battle.

In our topic lesson this morning you began creating your 3D map of the battlefield. There is a lot to do in this task and you really need to work closely with your clan members on this one to ensure you get it finished on time. I have to say every clan has made a great start. Well done!

As always we have a skills focus to consider and this week we are looking at:

Skills for Learning: Application: I can apply my knowledge of important historical events in a different context. I can carry out a task using what I have learned.

Social Skill: Helping each other: I can help my clan members in an appropriate way to ensure completion of a given task.

Here are some photographs from today’s session. I look forward to, hopefully, posting the completed maps on Thursday. Let me know what you think so far.

P5S – Homework w/b 12.09.16

tango face smile big by warszawianka - Smiley icon from Tango Project: http://tango.freedesktop.org/Tango_Desktop_Project

Tango Project icons are Public Domain.

Good afternoon everyone!I hope you are enjoying the sunshine today. It is homework time again. Keep reading for a rundown of your homework and reminders for the coming week.

Spelling: Please complete list 12 or19 in your spelling jotter. Each word should be written out 3 times and a creative spelling activity for each word should also be completed. If you are choosing to use the newspaper creative activity, you should only do so for 3 or 4 words.

Please ensure your presentation has been completed to a high quality. Also, please ensure any corrections are being completed each week. This task should be returned to school by Thursday.

Book Detectives: Please read chapters 17-19 (inclusive) at home. Once you have done so, write a short summary of what has happened in these chapters. You should also choose your favourite part for your Illustrator segment. A detailed drawing should be completed in your jotter. Be ready to explain to your group members what your illustration represents and why it is your favourite part. You should also choose a short paragraph to read aloud to your group members.

This task should be completed for Thursday. Please ensure this task is completed as otherwise you will be unable to participate fully in the class lesson.

Maths: I have set up 3 challenges on Mangahigh for you to complete. As always, you should play the games as often as possible to achieve the highest medal you can. I know that some of you are thoroughly enjoying playing the games on Mangahigh, however please remember to limit the time you are playing: DO NOT let Mangahigh take over your life!

There are also some of you who are NOT playing the games at all. If this continues you will be issued with worksheets to complete instead which are a lot less fun to do. Please remember anyone who is unable to access Mangahigh at home may use the IT Suite for a short time at the beginning of lunchtime.

These challenges should be completed by Friday.

Topic: You have now had your Personal Project task for a week. I will be checking with you this week to see what area of the Scottish Wars of Independence you have decided to research. Please remember to use your time wisely and do not leave everything to the last minute.

Please remember that if I can supply any resources from school you just need to ask.

Here are your reminders for this week.

  1. P.E. will be on Tuesday and Friday. Please ensure you have a full kit for both days: shorts, change of top and trainers.
  2. Please return your consent form for our trip to Stirling Castle as soon as possible.
  3. If you have not already done so, please return your annual data check form.
  4. All homework jotters (Spelling and Book Detectives) should now be covered. If not, please do so. If you require paper, please ask as I can supply you with some from class.

P5S – The Battle of Stirling Bridge

Image result for lion rampant flag

Today we completed our Battle of Stirling Bridge challenge. Each clan had to ensure they worked closely together to complete all aspects of the task. Some clans managed this very well, others need to work on it a little more. Well done to those individuals who were very honest about this when using the success criteria to assess the overall task.

P5S – Marvellous Maths

Image result for tally marks

Today in maths we were out and about the school conducting a survey in another class.

After each group had decided on a survey topic they created a group tally chart to record their findings. They also had to consider the different ways to present their survey to your audience.

Each group visited another class to conduct their survey and I am very pleased to report that a few teachers commented on just how well you conducted yourselves. Well done!

Once all the information has been collated and recorded in your jotters, you will then display it in a graph of your choice. This will be our job for next week.

Here are a few photographs from today’s lesson.

P5S – Daily Mile

Image result for footsteps

We have been continuing with our Daily Mile (or Daily Jog as it is for some in our class) most days. We have been very lucky with the weather however as we do live in Scotland, the chances are this will change very soon. Please ensure you have a jacket with you as we will still be venturing outside even if it is cold and wet.

Here you are during today’s session.

P5S – The Battle of Stirling Bridge

Image result for lion rampant flag

Today we looked at our first battle of the Scottish Wars of Independence: The Battle of Stirling Bridge.

Learning Outcome I can successfully use a variety of sources to research The Battle of Stirling Bridge. I can use my research to show an understanding of a historical event.

I can use primary and secondary sources selectively to research events in the past. SOC 2-01a

I can investigate a Scottish historical theme to discover how past events or the actions of individuals or groups have shaped Scottish society. SOC 2-03a

As always we had our skills which we were focusing on and this time we also had to consider which of our skills and qualities would be best for each part of the task

Skills for Learning – Analysis: I can identify important information from selected resources and organise my research appropriately.

Social Skill – Having a role within the group: I can consider my personal skills and qualities to ensure all aspects of the task are completed.

During our research we learned about the armies (and their leaders) involved, how the battle progressed and finally how the battle was won. Our initial discussions led us to believe that maybe the Scots would be defeated by the English due to the huge difference in size of armies. However, that was not to be and Wallace and his men outwitted the English to go on and win the battle. Tell someone at home what happened. Can you draw them a quick map of the battlefield?

We also compared Scottish soldiers to English soldiers and looked at the differences in the equipment they had; again, another reason why it was believed the English army would win!

I was very impressed at just how focused everyone was during this task and you all managed to complete a great amount of work. Have a look at how wonderful your maps and soldiers are looking already. Well done! I am looking forward to seeing everything completed and on your wall spaces on Thursday.

Here are a few photographs of your work so far. I will post the final creations on Thursday.

Primary 5 – Personal Project

As part of our topic you have the opportunity to show your knowledge and understanding of the Scottish Wars of Independence by presenting a personal project to your peers.

This is a long-term project which should be completed at home over the next 4 weeks. If you require any resources which I can source in school, please ask. Your completed project should be brought to school on Thursday 6th October as you will be presenting your information on this day.

Please find below the task sheet with all of the required details. A paper copy will also be issued in class.

Learning Outcome

I can create a detailed presentation on and area of The Scottish Wars of Independence that is of interest to me. I can investigate a Scottish historical theme to discover how past events or the actions of individuals, or groups, have shaped Scottish society.

SOC 2-03a

THE SCOTTISH WARS OF INDEPENDENCE

PERSONAL PROJECT

Skill for Learning

Application & Knowledge: I can apply my knowledge of The Scottish Wars of Independence to plan and produce an interesting and creative presentation.

Skill for Work

I can organise my time and resources independently to ensure my project is completed in the allocated time.

Background

In class we have been learning about a variety of aspects relating to The Scottish Wars of Independence. Now it is your turn to become independent historical researchers! You are being asked to find out about an area of the Wars that is of particular interest to you and share your findings with your peers.

Task

What you need to know: You are free to complete your personal project in any way you wish. You can pick something very specific (clans, weapons, a particular key figure or battle) or something a bit more general (Scottish heritage). If you wish, you may even choose an area we have not covered in class.

What you need to do: You can present your project in any way you choose. This might be in written form, a PowerPoint presentation, a booklet, a video or even a model. In other words, you have the choice to choose the way you feel will best help you to demonstrate your knowledge of your chosen topic. This project is all homework based therefore you need to think about the resources you will have access to: books, library, internet, personal accounts etc.

What you need to think about: You can use whatever you need to describe your personal project: photographs, videos, props etc. Try to think about why you picked this area for your project. What was it that interested you about it? Remember some people in class may know nothing about the area you have chosen to discuss, so you must explain it in detail.

How to get started: Get all of your ideas down on paper and then decide which ones are the most relevant and will best engage your audience.

Product Criteria

• You are free to present your researched topic in any way you choose. However, try to think outside of the box a little. In other words, be creative!

• You have 4 weeks to pull your project together so use your time wisely. You should be prepared to bring your completed project to school on Thursday 6th October.

• This is an independent research project. It is your responsibility to organise your time effectively and ensure you are putting in enough effort.

• Everyone will approach this task in different ways so don’t worry if your friends are doing something different from you. Have faith in your project and what you have to say and it will all work out. This is your chance to show just how well you can take responsibility for your own learning.

P5S – Dodgeball

Our dodgeball sessions in P.E. are well under way and I have to say how much I am enjoying watching our teams play against one another.

After great discussion, each team chose a name: The Dodgems and The Wrecking Balls. Before we begin each week we have a team tactics talk where the children consider how they played the week before. They discuss changes that could be made to they way they play as a team and how to use these changes during their next games.

Here are a few action shots from yesterday’s games.

P5S – Enjoying ERIC!

We have had another week where we have Enjoyed Reading IClass. As a school we are promoting the importance of reading and every day we will have a short time in class where we will just read and discuss the books we are reading.

Our beanbag rota is working very well and our pillows and blankets are being used very creatively. Remember you are more than welcome to bring in your own pillow and/or blanket to use during these sessions. Our classroom cupboard is filling up very quickly with a selection which have already been brought from home.

Here are a few photographs from some of our sessions this week.

P5S – Magic Maths!

What a busy day we had! What wonderful work you all produced! I was very impressed today with the effort shown.

This week in maths we have been learning about block graphs and bar graphs. You have been gathering information and then displaying this in different types of graphs.

This morning we conducted a survey in class which you recorded in a tally table. You then used this information to draw a bar graph that included ALL of the relevant features: titles, labels and an accurate scale.

Here are your completed bars graphs. What wonderful work from EVERYONE! A huge WELL DONE! See if you can spot your bar graph and show it to someone at home.

P5S – Book Detectives Homework

Image result for charlie and the chocolate factory

Please remember that your Book Detectives homework is issued on a Thursday for the following Thursday. All details should be written in your diary however I will also, for the next few weeks, include a reminder on our blog each Thursday.

This week you should read chapters 12-14 (inclusive) at home. Once you have completed your reading you should summarise what you have read. Next, choose your favourite part to draw. Once again you will be explaining your illustration to your group members so try to make it as detailed as possible. Please remember to choose a short paragraph from a section that you particularly enjoyed as you will be reading this aloud to your group during our next session.

This task should be completed for Thursday 8th September.

P5S – Timeline Task

Image result for scottish lion rampant

Learning Outcome I can create an accurate timeline, in chronological order, to show the main events in the Scottish Wars of Independence.

I can interpret historical evidence from a range of periods to help to build a picture of Scotland’s heritage and my sense of belonging. SOC 2-02a

This week we were looking at the timescale of the Scottish Wars of Independence in more detail. After organising our timeline cards into chronological order, we had to create our own clan timeline which clearly displayed the important events, before, during, and after the Wars.

Once again we were looking at different skills during the task.

Skills for Learning Analysis: I can select and organise specific information to show my understanding of a historical event.

Skill for Work Organisation: I can organise myself to ensure I remain on task. I can work independently, and collaboratively, with my clan members where needed.

I was very impressed at how well the majority of you worked on this task. The end products (your timelines) are looking wonderful on your wall spaces. Well done!

Have a look at everyone hard at work. Don’t you all look very busy!

Here are some photographs of your completed timelines. Show your clan timeline to someone at home.

Board Games Masterclass

This afternoon we had our second Masterclass of the term. Our board games sessions seem to be going down a treat and everyone is certainly having lots of fun. It is lovely seeing the children mixing so well with one another.

We had a number of games being played today: Monopoly, Connect 4, Battleships, The 5 Second Rule and Scrabble to name a few. Our Scrabble players were having a great time trying to think up as many words as they could – even if they weren’t real words!

Here are a few photographs of today’s fun.

P5S – Badminton Fun!

Image result for badminton

Today we had our second badminton session and once again, great fun was had be all.

First we warmed up with a light jog and a few games of name tig (everyone’s favourite by all accounts). Next we worked on our control by bouncing the shuttlecock as many time as we could off the racket without dropping it. We had a 12 and an impressive 17!

We broke into two teams to see how many points each team could gain by trying to aim the shuttlecock directly into a hoop. A little more practice is needed on this one next week.

Finally we ended by practicing our forehand and backhand shots across the gym hall to our partners. We had some fantastic volleying going on. I think it may be time to get the nets out. Well done Primary 5!

P5 – Mapping Task

Image result for scottish rampant lion

This week we will be using our skills in mapping to locate the countries, cities and towns visited (or attacked) during the Scottish Wars of Independence.

Our learning outcome for this task is: I can successfully use a map to locate specific places and show these on a blank map.

To extend my mental map and sense of place, I can interpret information from different types of maps and am beginning to locate key features within Scotland, UK, Europe or the wider world.SOC 2-14a

The skills we are focusing on today are:

Skills for Learning:Application: I can select specific information from a map and display this correctly on a blank map, showing my understanding of a historical event.

Skill for WorkSelf-direction: I can remain on task and work collaboratively with my clan members to complete a task in an allocated time.

Using the links below, and a class atlas, you should locate the important places associated with the Wars of Independence. Please read your task sheet carefully, and work closely with your clan members, to decide on the places you should include in your map.

P5S – Homework w/b 29.8.16

tango face smile big by warszawianka - Smiley icon from Tango Project: http://tango.freedesktop.org/Tango_Desktop_Project

Tango Project icons are Public Domain.

Good evening everyone! I hope you have been having a lovely, restful weekend after another busy week. Well done to everyone for working so hard. Here is a rundown of your homework and reminders for the coming week.

Spelling: In your homework jotter you should complete your next spelling list. This will be either List 10 or List 17. I was very pleased with how well the homework was completed last week. Well done! Please remember to include the date and a title (this should be your list number) each week.

Each word (8 in total) should be written out three times, neatly in your jotter. You should then use the Creative Spelling activities for EACH of your spelling words. This task should be completed and returned to school for Friday.

Book Detectives: Read chapters 6-9 (inclusive) of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. You should then complete your Summariser segment by writing a short summary of what has happened in these chapters. For your Illuminator segment, please choose your favourite part from the chapters you have read and draw a detailed picture. Be ready to explain to your group members what it is about.

This task should be completed for Thursday. Please ensure you do complete the task otherwise you will be unable to participate in our class lesson as you will have no information to share with your group members.

Maths: I have set up three challenges on Mangahigh for you to complete. Try to play the games as many times as you can to achieve the highest medal possible. If you are unable to access this at home, you may use the IT Suite in school for 15 minutes at lunchtime, or I can issue you with worksheets to complete instead. Just let me know! Usernames and passwords will be issued in class on Monday. This task should be completed by Friday.

Here are your reminders for this week.

  1. P.E. will be on Tuesday and Friday. Please ensure you have a full kit with you: change of t-shirt, shorts and trainers.
  2. Last week you were issued with a number of letters, please return these to school as soon as possible.
  3. Please remember to have a suitable outdoor jacket for our Daily Mile sessions. You may bring a light raincoat and leave it at school if you wish.
  4. Please remember to show someone at home our class blog so they can see just what you get up to each day. I have posted quite a few photographs over the last week. They, and you, are more than welcome to leave a comment letting us know your thoughts.

P5S – Key Figures Research

This week during our topic lessons we have been researching the key figures involved in The Scottish Wars of Independence.

Learning Outcome: I can identify important information relating to the key figures involved in the Scottish Wars of Independence.

I can investigate a Scottish historical theme to discover how past events or the actions of individuals, or groups, have shaped Scottish society. SOC 2-03a

I can discuss why people and events from a particular time in the past were important, placing them within a historical sequence. SOC 2-06a

Each clan member had the job of researching at least one of the key figures in detail. I was very impressed at the quality of some of your note taking during this task. It is a wonderful skill to learn and one we will be using many times during Primary 5.

You then had the job of sharing your notes with your clan members to allow everyone to learn about ALL of the key figures. We had some wonderful information being shared: these were some very interesting people we were researching. Please tell someone at home some of the facts you learned this week.

The final part of the task was to bring all of this information together to make a group fact file about all of the key figures. This was the tricky bit as we only had a certain amount of time to complete the task. A few , if not all, of our clans will be working very hard this term on improving their time management.

During this task I recorded what I could see and hear the children doing/saying and I have to say it was pretty impressive. Some clan members do need to try and stay on task a little more than they are, however this is something we will work very closely on throughout Primary 5.

Here are a few photographs of everyone hard at work.
