Primary 2

This year our teacher is Miss Potter.

Our P.E. days are Wednesday afternoon and a Friday morning. Please ensure your child does not wear any jewellery on P.E days.

Mrs Brown will cover the class on a Wednesday midday while Miss Potter plans lots of fun activities for the class.

Class Dojo

Please join our class Dojo to keep up to date with class news, photos and more! You can use Dojo to view the points your child has been given and to view our class Dojo story.

P2 Homework

Throughout term 2 children will continue to be introduced to one new sound each week. A homework activity to consolidate learning of each sound will be sent home in the red folder.

Reading books will also be sent home in the red folders (usually 2).

A new Maths Wall with a range of activities has also been sent home for term 2. Please continue to work through these activities at home to consolidate concepts learned in class.

Red folders will be sent home on a Monday and should be left in school on Thursday.

Reminder

Please ensure that all items that your child brings to school are clearly marked with their name. This is very helpful if items get misplaced! There is a lost property box at the school office should you ever wish to check for items that have been missing for more than a few days. We will do our best to send all items home with your child each day!

Here are some of the exciting things we will be learning this term…

Literacy

We will be reinforcing all the sounds which have been introduced through play, activities and some written tasks. We will enjoy a class story each day and discuss our Likes and Dislikes, Puzzles and Connections. We will be working on our prediction and summarising skills as well as discussing differences between fact and opinion.

Lots of listening and talking skills will be developed during the activities above.

We will continue Talk for Writing. We will start this term with the story ‘The Magic Porridge Pot.’ Children will be encouraged to create their own story maps and add writing to them. There will be resources put out in the classroom linked to the current story to spark enthusiasm and imagination. This hopefully sparks some free writing too. Primary 2 have started to take part in more formal handwriting lessons using a lined jotter.

Numeracy and Maths

We will continue to refer to the months of the year through our class calendar, birthdays and other events. Having a calendar on display at home and discussing events with the children will help reinforce this concept.

We will be learning about measure, fractions and angles this term. Through play children will explore these concepts by taking part in a variety of games and activities. They will also spend time at our teacher table to engage in some teacher led tasks.

We will continue to reinforce our understanding of numbers to 100 and continue to practise number formation. We will also regularly practise addition and subtraction skills through number talks lessons.

Health & Wellbeing

Each week we have a PATHS lesson. Our puppet friends; Twiggle, Henrietta, Daphne and Duke help us with emotional understanding, self-control, social problem-solving, relationships and self-esteem. Each week we will have a special Child of the Week! They will receive compliments from their peers. This will be shared with you on the Class Dojo.

Broad General Education

Our topic this term is Scotland. We will take part in various lessons in response to the interests of pupils. Some of the activities already mentioned by the children when creating our KWL chart include: Scottish history, Scottish animals, Scottish food, Scottish clothes and maps/towns.

We will continue developing a broad range of skills during our skills afternoon with Primary 1 each week. Children will worked in mixed groups and take part in a carousel of activities. We are developing our communication skills, social skills, creativity and problem solving skills.

Play

Play is a very important part of how children learn and our environment promotes challenge and enjoyment and personalisation and choice through opportunities to explore different activities, materials and contexts. Opportunities for the children to be imaginative and creative both indoor and outdoor are provided daily.

Here are some of the many skills being developed during play.
