Class Dojo

Please join our class Dojo to keep up to date with class news, photos and more! You can use Dojo to view the points your child has been given, their profile and to view our class Dojo story.

Homework

During our second term which will take us to Easter, the children will continue to practise all their sounds. They will sound out and blend words and learn some ‘Tricky’ words (these are words which cannot be sounded – you, we, she, the etc)   Please continue to practise reading and try some of the suggested activities on the Phonics Grid. Children will find it easier to blend sounds and read words if they use the sound and not the name of the letters, d rather than D, t rather than T etc.

Reading books will continue to be sent home. These will be a mixture of Phonics, Oxford Reading Tree, Non-fiction and choices from the library.

Please continue to try some of the activities on the Maths Wall.

Class Leadership Role

This year, our class has leadership responsibility for looking after the birds. This involves feeding the birds and recording the birds which come into the playground.

Reminder

Please ensure that all items that your child brings to school are clearly marked with their name. This is very helpful if items get misplaced!

Here are some of the exciting things we will be learning this term…

Literacy

We will be reinforcing all the sounds and using this knowledge to blend and read words. We will develop our recognition of Tricky words. We will enjoy a class story each day and discuss our Likes and Dislikes, Puzzles and Connections. We will continue to explore rhymes and rhyming words. Rhyming is a very important pre-reading skill and an easy one to develop at home through sharing rhymes, stories, poems and silly rhymes!

Lots of listening and talking skills will be developed during the activities above.

We will continue Talk for Writing and Foundations of Writing. Talk for Writing  encourages the children to listen to, learn and re-tell stories. Our first story this term is The Gingerbread Man.  We will explore some non-fiction writing too. Foundations of Writing encourages children to draw themselves and their experiences, adding more and more detail. Most children are attempting to  ‘have a go’ at writing their own stories, using their phonic knowledge to sound out words.

Numeracy and Maths

We will continue to explore months of the year through our class calendar, birthdays and other events. Having a calendar on display at home and discussing events with the children will help with this concept.

We will continue to explore numbers 0-20 and beyond.  Counting, naming, ordinal counting, counting forwards and backwards (starting and stopping at random numbers) clapping and ordering.

We have been exploring addition and the children will use real objects to help them count and record the sums. We will also look at subtraction.

We will explore 3D objects and 2D shapes through lots of play and creativity.

Lots of Numeracy and Maths skills will be developed through play.

Health & Wellbeing

We will continue our weekly  PATHS lesson. Our puppet friends; Twiggle, Henrietta, Daphne and Duke help us with emotional understanding, self-control, social problem-solving, relationships and self-esteem. Each child will have a chance to be our Child of the Week and receive a list of compliments from their friends.

During P.E we will be starting gymnastics lessons. We will practise balance, jumping, travelling and rolling using mats, benches and other apparatus.

We will also be learning some Scottish dances.

Broad General Education

We will be learning all about Scotland. The children will decide what they would like to find out about and how best to do this. This ties in with Burns Day and our Scots Verse Assembly.

We will be hosting a Daffodil Tea on Thursday 26th March. The children will plan this event, invite their guests and entertain you!

Other topics this term will be chosen by the children, following their interests.

Play

Play is a very important part of how children learn and our environment promotes challenge and enjoyment and personalisation and choice through opportunities to explore different activities, materials and contexts. Opportunities for the children to be imaginative and creative both indoor and outdoor are provided daily.

Here are some of the many skills being developed during play.
