By engaging with expressive arts, pupils are given the opportunity to enhance their creative talents and develop artistic skills. Learning in expressive arts enables pupils to:
- Be creative and express themselves in different ways
- Experience enjoyment and contribute to other people’s enjoyment through creative and expressive performance and presentation
- Develop important skills, both those specific to expressive arts and those which are transferable
- Develop an appreciation of aesthetic and cultural values, identities and ideas and, for some, prepare for advanced learning and future careers by building foundations for excellence in the expressive arts
The expressive arts curriculum involves the following areas:
- Art and design
- Dance
- Drama
- Music

At Bargarran, we aim to give pupils broad and varied opportunities to engage with the expressive arts. This can be done through stand alone lessons, interdisciplinary learning, extra curricular activities and whole school events.
Art & Design
Through art and design activities, pupils are given the opportunity to use a range of artistic medium and learn about a variety of artistic techniques. Pupils are encouraged to use their artistic creativity and imagination to express themselves and demonstrate their learning.
Dance
Dance skills are taught as part of our P.E. Curriculum. We also enjoy celebrating our Scottish heritage by learning a range of Scottish Dances on an annual basis.
Drama
Pupils in our infant classes, regularly use imaginative play to help them explore new learning and the world around them. Drama is used in all stages to give pupils the opportunity to express themselves and their ideas, and to give pupils the opportunity to perform for others. Pupils are introduced to a range of drama techniques and encouraged to develop an active role as both a performer and an observer.
Music
Music is explored through the resource, Charanga. This interactive resource introduces pupils to key musical concepts such as beat, rhythm, tone and pitch. Pupils are also encouraged to listen to and analyse a range of musical styles as well as having the opportunity to perform as a class using song and musical instruments.
