Through social studies, children and young people develop their understanding of the world by learning about other people and their values, in different times, places and circumstances. They also develop their understanding of the environment and how it has been shaped. Through this learning, children develop a greater understanding of their place in the world and their role as responsible citizens.
Learning in social studies is structured by three organisers:
- People, past events and societies
- People, place and environment
- People in society, economy and business

At Bargarran, social studies is taught through interdisciplinary topics, which give pupils the opportunity to explore social studies themes within a broader learning context, while making links to other areas of the curriculum. We aim to ensure that pupils play an active role in planning their learning. As such, staff engage in discussions with classes to provide contexts for learning that match pupil’s interests and current events in our world.
