Thursday 28th May – Primary 5

Good Morning, Fiery Fives!

I hope that you had a good rest, a good breakfast and are now ready to go!

Let’s begin with our morning prayer:

God our Father

As we prepare to begin our work

We ask you to help us to use properly the many gifts you have given us

So that we may fully benefit from out day together. Amen.

Health and Wellbeing

We have all been enjoying the lovely sunny weather recently and it has been great to be able to get outside and play.  Even though it is important for everyone to enjoy the sun we have got to remember that it can burn your skin. There are three important steps to stop sunburn:

• Cover up with clothing and a hat
• Spend time in the shade,
• Wear suitable sunscreen and apply it often

In the attached sheet the character in it is out in the sun with no hat!!!  I would like you to design a hat for the character and make sure it offers suitable protection against the sun.

Spelling

The focus for this week in on words ending with vowel sounds: a, e, i, o, u

Yesterday you matched keywords to definitions and created some visual spelling research pictures.

Today we’re going to have a look at forming plural nouns.

Spelling Rule: Words ending in ‘o.’

For words ending in o we usually add -es.

tomato   tomatoes

However we simply add ‘s’ for:

Words ending in oo            cuckoo   cuckoos

‘Music’ words                       piano      pianos

Shortened words                 photo     photos

Task 1

Write the noun and its plural:

a) tornado   b) mango   c) cello    d) torpedo

e) domino   f) kangaroo   g) cuckoo   h) piano

Task 2

Using a dictionary, find out what you can about the following words (where did they come from/are they short versions of longer words?):

a) photo    b) piano    c) disco    d) rhino    e) hippo

Write the word and your discoveries in your jotter.

R.E.

When we pray it is important to remember a few simple things.  Prayers can be simple thoughts and words coming straight from the heart.  Sometimes God doesn’t seem to give us what we pray for.  Do not give up praying – keep on talking to God and listening for he knows what is best for you, even if it is not what you expected.  It is also important to remember that we don’t just ask God for things we want.  Remember to praise God and thank him for his goodness, to tell him about ourselves and others and say sorry if we have done wrong.

Why not join in with this hymn ‘Alleluia! Alleluia! Give Thanks to the Risen Lord’ below to praise God:

I would like you to write out a short prayer thanking God for all the wonderful things you have in your life.  I have included a template below for you to use or you can design your own.

Primary 7- Thursday 28th May

Good morning Primary 7,

I hope you are all well. I received quite a few emails from you yesterday and it really put a smile on my face reading them as I am missing you all.

Let us begin as we always do with our morning prayer. I would like you to say a special prayer to your Guardian Angel to continue to watch over and protect you.

Angel of God
My guardian dear
To Whom God’s love
Commits me here
Ever this day
Be at my side
To light and guard
To rule and guide.

Amen

A few children have contacted me to say they have completed their Scholastic novels that they were set and would like to be assigned new ones. Well done if you have completed your assigned novel or indeed a personal reader as we all know how important reading is and it is such a nice way to switch off and relax. I have really enjoyed reading my book in the back garden with the sunshine.

Continue to try your best Primary 7 and remember to take plenty of breaks, get lots of fresh air and do something that you enjoy to help keep your spirits up.

Send over any work that you have completed so that I can share it with your peers on our daily blogs. Any task that you complete should make you proud as I know it can be difficult to stay motivated during these times. I am proud of you all!

Have a terrific Thursday and I will be back tomorrow with more learning opportunities.

Maths🔢

Yesterday you kick started your maths work by practising the days of the week and months of the year. Today we are going to focus on the Seasons.

How many seasons are there?

There are 4 seasons. The four seasons — winter, spring, summer, autumn.

It is important that you can name the seasons and their characteristics.

Jack Hartmann is here to help you! He is back with another catchy song. Enjoy!

How did you get on yesterday with reading the calendar? It is a very important skill that you will use throughout your lives, especially when you are a grown up.

I like to mark important dates on my calendar. First I always like to put in peoples’ birthdays so I do not forget. I also add in any holidays I have planned and any appointments I need to go to.

Calendars are very useful! Keep practising reading the calendar in your house.

Round the clock ⏰

Yesterday you were learning about clocks!

You now know that  a clock is a device that tells the time.

How many different types of clocks did you find in your house?

Today you are going to learn even more about the analogue clock.

Before you can tell the time, it is important that you learn all about the different parts of the analogue clock.

Let’s learn about the analogue clock with Jack Hartmann.

Here is a picture of an analogue clock:

Clock Face, Digital Clock, Analog Signal, 24hour Clock, Number ...

An analogue clock is a circular-faced clock.

There are twelve numbers on a clock. As you can see the numbers one to twelve are around the outside of the clock. These numbers represent the hour.

The clock has two hands. Can you notice the difference in their size?

The hour hand is the short hand.

The long hand is used to measure minutes.

Here is a little song to help you remember the difference between  the short hand and long hand on a clock.

Now that you know about the main parts of a clock, it’s time to make your own!

Today I challenge you to make your very own clock face! ⏰

There are lots of different ways you can do this. Let’s get creative!

First you will need to find something that is a circular shape and draw around it. This could be a lid or plate.

Write the number 12 at the top and the number 6 at the bottom of the circle. Can you write in the rest of the clock face numbers?

Now put a dot in the centre of your circle. Well done! Now you have a clock face.

What else do we need? 2 hands!

Can you find 2 things that could be the hands of the clock? You could use spoons, pencils or straws but remember, one has  to be longer than the other.

If you would prefer to make your own paper clock, I have included a template for you below.

clockfacetemplate

I would love to see a picture of the clock you have created. Please send a tweet or email me a picture.

Why don’t you finish off your maths work with a fun game of Whats the time Mr Wolf? Have fun! 🐺

Good morning primary 3,

I hope you are all having a nice week in the sunshine.

Thank you for all of the photographs of your virtual sports day. It looks like you all had great fun!

Literacy

Today is our writing day. We are going to be writing an imaginative story.

This is a fictional story and must include characters, setting and a main event.

To help you generate some ideas have a look at the story mat below.

Roll-a-Dice Literacy Fun | Writing station, Roll a story, Writing ...

Use a dice to choose one thing from each column. You should roll the dice 3 times to give yourself a character, setting and a problem. The problem will be your main event. If you do not have a dice at home then you can choose one thing from each column.

Now I would like you to use these three things to write an imaginative story. Remember it must have a beginning, a middle and an end. You could also include a picture.

Don’t forget to check your core targets!

I would love to read some of your finished stories. Please send them to gw17mcmullenkenedi@glow.sch.uk

Literacy

I have set you some tasks to do on Studyladder to practise your phonemes and common words so login and have a go!

SPLAT – Today I would like you to write your common words in chalk outside. Ask someone to call a word out and once you find the word SPLAT it with a water balloon. If you don’t have any water balloons you could use a nerf gun or jump on the word or colour it in.  You can do this with as many of your common words as you can.

Now choose a fun way to practise spelling your common words old, do, going

Copy and complete.

old               old            old

do                do             do

going         going          going

1. I have an _____ toy that I like to play with.
2. I ____ my best work in class.
3. I am ________ to the park to play.

Remember to use “a capital letter at the start and full stop at the end, fingers spaces in between and show it to a friend.”

Reading

I assigned a new book for you to read on Wednesday, read this book again and tell me what happened at the beginning, middle and end of the story (see link below).  🌟Well done to Rebecca and Charlie 🌟who have already managed to read their books! Perhaps you could try to record yourselves on Scholastic and I will be able to hear you.

P4/3 Wednesday 27th May

Good morning everyone, I am wondering how tired you all were after a great virtual sports day!  Thank you to those who emailed videos and put up twitter pictures.  It was great to see you all looking so well and dare I say it, out of breath!!!

Let’s start with our morning prayer and a Hail Mary.

Literacy

For the rest of this week, I want you to revise your phoneme from last week.

  • P3 – ough
  • P4 – ow

Choose some from your list and use them in a sentence, you can write these down if you want.  I was very impressed with some of your phoneme stories last week, thank you for those.

Quizzes are very popular just now and I have set you one below all about St Barbara’s parish and community.  You may have to do a bit of research to answer these and that is fine.  After you have completed this, create your own quiz on any topic of your choice, e.g Disney films, Children’s novels, The Spanish language etc  Send it to me and I will put it up on our Shining stars wall for all to see and have a go!

St Barbara’s Quiz

Maths

Again, well done to everyone who took part in the Sumdog challenge.  Today let’s practising counting out loud.  Let’s start counting in 1’s to 100, 2’s to 100, 5’s to 100 and 10’s to 100.

I also want you to say your times tables like we do in class – chanting.  Do this to the 6x.  You like to play BINGO in class, choose your 6 answers between the 2-6x and ask an adult to shout out times tables questions for you.  It would be good to play against someone else, a sibling or another adult.

Recap on Time from last week:

Write these times in digital format using the 12 hour clock.

  • Half past 12
  • 5 o’clock
  • Half past 3
  • Quarter past 1
  • 10 o’clock
  • Quarter to 7
  • 9 o’clock
  • Quarter past 2

RE

When Jesus needed to feel very close to his Father, what did he do? – He would pray.  Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, before he was betrayed by Judas.  He prayed before he raised Lazarus from the dead and Jesus prayed during the Last Supper, before he broke the bread.  Like us Jesus needed to share his worries and problems with his heavenly Father; he knew that he was never alone.  Just as we are never alone.  God is always with us.

When we pray we are having a conversation with God.  When we talk to God, he listens.  We don’t have to have special times for saying prayers.  Often we say them at bedtime but we can talk to God at any time.  Do you ever feel unsure about what to say to God?  Don’t worry as God our Father likes to hear about everything we have to tell him and he is always ready to listen.

The apostles knew how important it was to pray to God but like us they often felt uncertain about how to pray.  One day they asked Jesus to teach them how to pray.  What was the prayer that Jesus taught them? – The Our Father.

Watch this short video about how Jesus taught his disciples the Our Father:

Let’s say the Our Father now.  I have copied the words to help you if you need it.

I would like you to download the picture below if you can and colour it in.  If you can’t download it why not draw a picture like this one.

Have a lovely day everyone. I have checked ahead and the weather has to be lovely for the next week so maybe you should take your work outside when you can.  Remember to drink from your water bottle!

Take care and stay safe.

Mrs Graham 🙂

Primary 6 – Wednesday 27th May

Good Morning Primary 6!!

I hope that you are all quite recovered after yesterday’s sports day exertions.

It’s Wednesday,

This week we are working on some word problems that involve addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Calculate the answers to these questions in your jotter.

a) Hayden plays 6 Xbox games. He scores 3.2 points in each game. How many points does he score altogether?

b) Olivia runs 5.4 miles every day. If she runs for 8 days, how far does she run?

c) Riley does a sponsored silence. For every hour, he must be silent he raises £8.50. How much will he raise if he stays silent for 9 hours?

d) Miss Huntley walks 3.6 miles to school. How many miles does she walk over 5 days?

e) Miss Huntley decides to walk home as well, so she walks 7.2 miles a day. How many miles does she walk over 15 days?

f) Caitlyn draws a square. Each side is 15.8cm. What is the perimeter of the square?

g) Brandon’s car drives 6.3 miles on one litre of petrol. How many miles will he cover on 4 litres of petrol?

h) Reece’s hair grows 0.8 cm per month. How many cm will his hair grow in 9 months?

i) Alexander measures rainfall over 7 months. The rain fall is 0.6 cm each month. How much rain has fallen over the 7 months?

j) Elvin buys a new pair of shoes with four shoe laces. Each shoe lace is 32.3cm long. How long are all four shoe laces put together?

Remember, decimals make no difference to how you add, subtract, multiply or divide you only have to remember to keep the decimal points above one another, in a straight line.

This is not how we would write out sums to find the answer so don’t write them this way in your jotter. Use place value, carrying and decomposition (borrowing) to find your answers.

I’ll post the answers to these tomorrow or you can send me your answers at:

gw09mcintoshdavid3@glow.sch.uk

This week for spelling it’s time for a roundup.

Here are some of the spelling words and patterns that we have looked at over the last few weeks. Copy them into your jotter and begin to practise them ahead of a  spelling test on Friday.

Please send us a copy of your picture at gw09mcintoshdavid3@glow.sch.uk or Tweet us @St_BarbarasPS.
