Welcome to this week’s update which is on Thursday due to the bank holidays tomorrow and Monday.
It has been just fabulous to see all of the work that has been going on across the school this week, even if you were completing it at home. I have loved looking at all of the photographs of your healthy snacks; you certainly have been really creative. They all looked delicious.
I’ve also really enjoyed looking at all of your hard work in jotters, your pictures and collages, outdoor learning and even stop motion videos. Well done, everyone!
Primary 4, your video was just beautiful and I hope that everyone else saw it too. If not, you can access it through the Parish website. Well done to all of you and to your families. A special, ‘Well Done’ to all of your friends in Primary 5/4 and Primary 4/3 who have supported you as well as to the staff who all made it possible. I would like to thank Fr. Campbell for leading it (which took several attempts to make sure that he held the candle in the correct hand!) so well.
Parents, thank you so much for your continuing help in supporting the children at home. I know that it is extremely difficult for you at times but I really appreciate your effort.
Teaching and Support Staff, thank you for all that you are doing for the children daily and behind the scenes; I greatly appreciate all that you do.
Finally, well done to all of our St. Barbara’s Superstars, our children! As always, you are a credit to your families and to all of our school community. Well, today we would have been at church as it is the Feast of the Ascension; Fr. Campbell has been on the phone already because he wanted to remind me to remind all of you (!) that you have to have a special, sneaky extra playtime today! Great news!
Next Tuesday the whole day is going to be a Virtual Sports’ Day – so look out for more information on the website!
So everyone – it’s Thursday, it’s the holiday weekend which means that once you have finished your work and had a long playtime, it’s Golden Time! I hope that you have a lovely, long weekend with your families.
Next, watch Euan make a healthy smoothie…delicious!
Keep sending your work in and see it on the blog: gw09mckinneysheelah@glow.sch.uk

Spelling Task
At the top of a page in a dictionary there are GUIDE words. Guide words are the first and last words on the pages. Look at the pages above. Bear is the first word on the first page while beyond is the last word on the second page. All of the other words on the pages are listed alphabetically between the guide words.
Here are the guide words from three different pages in the dictionary:
cool – correspond P.42 correspondent – country P. 43 impulse – independent P.109
Write the number of the page on which the following words would appear:
indeed 2. core 3. cosmonaut 4. corrupt 5. income 6. coppice 7. inadvertent 8. council
Can you think of three words not mentioned above which would be found on each of the three pages?
Answers can be found on the blog at 3.00pm today.
Numeracy
NLC SUMDOG Challenge.
Keep going everyone! We need to climb higher…let’s get to the summit!
Yesterday we looked at addition and subtraction in money calculations. Today we are going to remind ourselves about multiplication and division money calculations.
This week we have been looking at Jesus’ commandment to:
‘Love one another as I have loved you.’
Jesus showed his love for all of us on Good Friday when he died on the cross. Tomorrow we are going to celebrate the Feast of the Ascension. On this day, forty days after his resurrection on Easter Sunday, Jesus ascended into Heaven leaving the disciples behind to carry on with his work and to be witnesses for him. They were a little scared to be left without Jesus but they believed in him and they knew that he would not leave them alone. They were quite right of course; the Holy Spirit came to help them on the Feast of Pentecost and we’ll explore that later.
Below you will see two very different video clips about the Ascension. Please watch both of them.
Now what I would like you to do is to draw or make your own reminder of what happened on the Feast of the Ascension.
You could think about making the figures of Jesus, his disciples and the two people dressed in white – you could even create your own video clip.
Or you could draw them and write a sentence or a paragraph below; you might want to make a picture using other media – e.g. cotton wool for the clouds.
I have attached some ideas to help you below.
Whatever activity you choose to do, please email it to gw09mckinneysheelah@glow.sch.uk or, with an adult’s permission, upload it on to Twitter @St_BarbarasPS
Well done Primary 5. You’ve worked hard today. Time for a rest and I’ll see you tomorrow!

The focus for this week relates to dictionaries. Yesterday you were asked to find and then create some definitions.
Today we are going to look at alphabetical order:
In your jotter, please arrange the following in alphabetical order. Remember, if words begin with the same letter you might need to look at the second letter, or even the third or beyond.
animal house mother bicycle river
bingo below battery blend bulrushes
department favourite distance flavour dutiful
package paper palm padlock panel
strike struggle stroke stream stranger
transparent transport transmitter translation transfusion
Comprehension Task
Read the tasks several times before attempting the questions. You can go back to the text at any point.
Have a look at some of Aila’s Maths. She has set it out beautifully too. Fantastic! Well done, Aila!
To see your work on the blog, please send it to me: gw09mckinneysheelah@glow.sch.uk
R.E.
Yesterday we were looking at the Ten Commandments and Jesus’ message to,
‘Love one another as I have loved you.’
I asked you to think about your families and how much you love them. I also reminded you that Pope Francis has told us all to care for others, ‘No ifs, no buts!’
Today I would like to think about the people living in the same house as you; there might be two of you, there might be six of you! It doesn’t matter. Now I would like you to think of FIVE little things that you could do this week for those in your home. It could be that you set the table, make your bed, clear up after a meal, make someone a cup of tea or even take the vacuum cleaner for a walk!
When you have selected five things, draw some heart shapes and inside each, draw or write your tasks. You can make some extra hearts for decoration. Colour or decorate them carefully. Next make a circle wreath-shape like the picture below or if you have a paper plate, use that. Attach your heart shapes and display your Caring Wreath somewhere you can see it easily. Carry out your tasks this week and show that you care – no ifs, no buts!
Please email your Caring Wreath to (Teacher GLOW email) or, with an adult’s permission, upload them on to Twitter @St_BarbarasPS and to Pope Francis’ Twitter @Pontifex
Please select one or two tasks from the grid….then you’re finished for the day!
I hope that you enjoy the rest of your day. See you tomorrow.
We would like to evaluate our current home-learning programme. Please click on the link below to complete a brief survey. Your responses will help us to develop and to improve our programme. Please complete it on/before Thursday 21st May. Thank you.
It’s Monday and the beginning of a brand new week! The good news is that you have a holiday on Friday! The even better news is that you have a holiday next Monday…so let’s make the best of the time we have together!
As usual we will begin with our morning prayer:
God our Father
As we prepare to begin our work
We ask you to help us to use properly the many gifts you have given us
So that we may fully benefit from out day together. Amen.

Healthy Snack Day!
We’re heading towards our Virtual Sports’ Day next Tuesday and what better way to prepare than to think about healthy snacks for the day.
They don’t need to be fancy…just healthy and delicious.
Have a look at some of these:
Try to create a healthy snack of your own. What ingredients might you need?
Cooking Skills for Learning, Life and Work!
Depending upon your age, you could practise some of these skills as you prepare your snack. You might need to ask an adult for help.
You will be using skills that will be with you for the rest of your life. These skills are progressive. That means that if you haven’t peeled or sliced ingredients before (see the Primary 1 list) you will need to practise these before you move on to the next list!
Remember to wash your hands before you begin!

R.E.
Yesterday was the sixth Sunday of Easter. In the Gospel, Jesus said that if you love him, you will keep his commandments.
Commandments are rules. However God’s rules are all about love – about loving God and each other. If we love someone, we try our very best to show that by being polite, kind, generous and happy when we talk to them or about them to others.
You have rules and home and we have rules in school. Just like the Ten Commandments, our rules are all about looking after each other and doing the best for each other so that we can all be happy together at home or in school.
Sometimes we break the rules – adults as well as children. If we break God’s rules, we call that sin. Don’t worry though, we can make it better.
Just like at home or in school, if we are sorry and say that to the person we have hurt – and try our best not to do it again – God will forgive us because he loves each one of us so much.
We can read about the Ten Commandments which were given to Moses in the Old Testament which is the first section of the Bible.
You can see them here. Read them or ask an adult for help then chat to someone in your family about them.
In the New Testament (the second section of the Bible), Jesus spoke about love all of the time. In fact, he made a ‘New Commandment.’
He asked us all to, ‘ Love one another as I have loved you.’
If you think about it – we all love ourselves and look after ourselves.
Jesus is saying simply that we should love everyone else as much as we love ourselves. If we all did that, the world would be a much happier place! In fact, if we all did that then we would be following the Ten Commandments without even realizing it!
At Easter, Pope Francis told us that we should love and care for each other, ‘No ifs, no buts!’
Today, let’s think about how we love each other: our family and our friends.
I would like you to choose one of the following activities. You can download and print a picture or you can make one of your own. When you have finished it, place it somewhere where all of the family can see it to remind yourselves of how just much you love and care for each other.
Please email your pictures to gw09mckinneysheelah@glow.sch.uk or, with an adult’s permission, upload them on to Twitter.
Art and Design
This looks like great fun. It is a long clip but very worthwhile. The tasks get more difficult as you watch! Enjoy!
I hope that you have had a very good week so far and I’m sure that you are all looking forward to the weekend!
It has been great to see more of your work so please, keep sending it in. In fact I have enjoyed looking at your work so much I think that you should treat yourselves to a little extra Golden Time today!
First Holy Communion
On Sunday we should have been celebrating First Holy Communion with the Primary 4 children, their families, Fr Campbell and all of our staff. Unfortunately this has had to be postponed leaving everyone very disappointed.
Why not log on to St. Barbara’s Parish website and follow us on Twitter to see a special message this weekend. Please remember all of the children and their families in your thoughts and prayers at this special time.
Virtual Sports…are you up for the challenge?
On Tuesday 26th May we are going to celebrate Sports’ Day with a whole school day of activities and fun for all of the family!
There will be an action-packed grid full of sporty tasks which you can do from home – inside and out.
Look out for further information next week and remember to take lots of pictures!
It has ARRIVED!! The NLC SUMDOG Challenge begins today!
Please log on and do your very best today and through all of next week. Good luck!
P. 7 Transition
Updated information from OLHS was uploaded onto Twitter earlier in the week. The transition process is continuing between staff in St. Barbara’s and the high school.
I emailed a letter to parents of children intending to go to Chryston High on Wednesday. Can you please check that you have received this and let me know of any issues?
Feast of the Ascension: Thursday 21st May
Under normal circumstances all of the children would have been attending Mass next Thursday for the Feast of the Ascension. As this won’t be possible, Bishop Toal will be celebrating Mass on Thursday online at 11am for all of the school children in the Diocese. I will issue the link next week.
So just before the weekend begins, let’s take a few moments to remember all of our fabulous NHS staff, all of the keyworkers, all of our wonderful staff, all of your parents and the adults who have been supporting you at home this week. We’ll also think about Fr. Campbell who has been saying Mass every day and remembering all of us in his prayers.
We remember most especially the children in Primary 4 who would have received the Sacrament of First Holy Communion on Sunday – and all of their friends in class who were supporting them.
Let’s not forget about all of you – our fantastic children – who have been working so hard again this week! Well done all of you!
We ask God to bless each and every one of us today and to look after us all this weekend. Together, let’s say a Hail Mary in English or in Spanish, you choose…
