Friday Health Week P5/6

To round off HEALTH WEEK, we had an active session this morning doing circuit training in the hall. We got into some situations with the group opening tasks but we got there in the end! The circuits included tricep dips,  squats, push ups and calf raises,

We have also been writing today. Our focus has been persuasive writing to promote the importance of health! This has included Exercise, What we Eat and Friendship.

Wednesday Health P5/6

Today has been another busy day.

This morning we had a visit from Fiona at Childsmile. This time she wasn’t telling us what we shouldn’t EAT.. She was showing us how acid can rot our teeth and what drinks we should avoid! If the paper stayed blue the drink was good – if the paper went pink – avoid!

Then after break we had a Heartstart session with Miss Tiffney – learning all about what do in an emergency and if someone stops breathing or is choking.

This afternoon we were outside for our walk a mile – even though it was freezing.

Fun Tuesday in P5/6

What a busy and active day!

This morning we had a healthy snack presentation by Mary at Asda! We were looking at different snack alternatives we could have.. Some of us were even brave enough to try pomegranate seeds and cherry tomatoes.

Then we had our own class cooking lesson where we made our own fruit pizzas!

This afternoon we had a dance class! Thank you Natalie it was great fun!

Fitness Stations

New year. New exercises. Primary 5,6 have started off the year with sessions in fitness. Today 12 stations were set up and working in pairs the children had to complete the activities at each station. These included bench steps, star jumps, shuttle runs, which got them active and gentler stations such as stretches. Well done everyone.

Health Week 2016

What a fun and active week it has been!

The whole school and nursery  have been busy in a range of different health activities this week.

On Monday we were introduced to Health Week with a whole school assembly. Then Miss Tiffney worked with all of the classes to cover some aspects of HeartStart.

On Tuesday we had the Co-op visit for a fruit taster session as well as some of the classes participating in making their own healthy recipes.

On Wednesday there was an opportunity for everyone to experience circus skills and smoothie tasting thanks to Ian.

On Thursday everyone enjoyed participating in an Olympic Session run by Graeme.

The Paramedics came in the afternoon and worked with P3 upwards.

In addition each class aimed to complete a daily mile – some of the classes did this together.

It has been a really busy but fun week for everyone involved.

A big thank you to everyone who visited our school and made this week a great success.

An even bigger thank you to Miss Tiffney for organising everything.

People Who Help Us

Week beginning Monday 22nd February

This week that the boys and girls were introduced to their new topic of ‘People Who Help Us.’ They were all exctied to tell me things they already knew about the topic and different things they wanted to find out.

The children loved the role play corner. It has been set-up as a fire station and a hospial. Some were pretending to be fire fighters and others were pretending to be doctors. They loved getting the opportunity to play in the corner during lessons and during soft start in the morninng.

We had a station with playdough which the pupils enjoyed. They had to make the missing items on the cards to help the fire fighters, police and ambulance.

Each pupil made their bingo card with different emergencies on them. As a class we had fun playing a few games of bingo at the end of the lesson. The children were very pleased they were playing with the cards they had made themselves.

The boys and girls learned about when to dial 999. They were very enthusiastic about shouting the number out to me. They loved the video I showed about when to dial 999 and Abbie in particular was very keen to watch it for a second time.

Next week, the class will move on to looking at the fire service in more detail.

Healthy Eating Fun for the Nursery, P1 and P2

This afternoon the PM nursery children joined up with the P1’s and 2’s to continue their shared learning.

We have all been enjoying learning opportunities linked to a story called ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Picnic.’  In the story, the main character Mr Grinling does not have a very healthy lifestyle, and eats far too much unhealthy food!  Our boys and girls worked together in groups to learn about healthier options that Mr Grinling could enjoy on his picnic!

We made some fruit smoothies, some caterpillar fruit kebabs, some strawberry mice and some healthy wraps.  The boys and girls enjoyed making the different healthy snacks…and enjoyed tasting them even more!

It was great to see how confident our nursery children now are when working in the primary school environment.  The staff were delighted with the fantastic work from the children today, well done!

Heuristic Play and Physical Exercise in the nursery.

The children have been exploring Heuristic Play in the nursery. They have been building on their concentration skills, hand eye co-ordination and problem solving skills using every day materials. Heuristic play is set in a calm environment and the children helped set rules to keep themselves and others safe.  There is no right or wrong way to use the materials the children just have fun finding out the different ways to use them.

We have also been learning about physical activity through ‘Moursercise’, where we are all keeping fit by doing exercises to music with some of their favourite Disney characters. The children and adults are having so much fun with this!
